Today is the 19th Anniversary of Anfield '89. Ale

“Arsenal come streaming forward in surely what must be their last attack. A good ball by Dixon finding Smith. Thomas, charging through the midfield. Thomas! It's up for grabs now! Thomassssssssss. Right at the end. An unbelievable climax to the League season.”

It's been pretty normal on the Aragones front! And there's no news coming out of Spain's training camp. Even SPORT and MD are pretty quiet on the Barcelona front, nothing but rumours they've made up themselves, and repeated stories about how Keita and Pique are going to be signed today. Or tomorrow.

Any news on Adebayor retirement from Football?

3.12.2007 - 'If we don't win it (Premier League), I will take my shirt off and call Arsene Wenger.

'I'll say 'Boss, I want to stop playing football' because I have a lot of ambition and part of my ambition is to win the title.'

An Arsenal player saying something arrogant and stupid halfway through a season in which they won nothing - where have I heard this story before?

Hell, pick any season of late and you'll find some or other member of the squad talking Cr@p a few months in before Arsenal have inevitably crumbled to the pressure.

Depends. If the Arsenal fans renounce their Agoonerism (whether tacitly or openly) then I won't have a problem with them. But the culture at the club won't change, so I'll continue ripping into that.

Is probably a sign that Arragones(sp?) sees him as a valuable member of the team.

Hope he starts for them and put in world class performances which we all know he's capable of. <Ale>

Probably true. I dunno if you can blame the manager too much though, as with Rooney. There's also the fact they're both young and still have a lot to learn about the game, and that in their club sides the teams are built around them and make up for their weaknesses, whereas internationally there's more pressure to pick the best XI regardless of if they compliment each other properly.

Do you really think that Man U is built around Rooney? If anything I'd say he's the one who gets shunted around to accommodate others, sometimes the target man in a front 3, sometimes on the left. I think his best position is central behind a target man.

Whatever you may think about Arsenal's style of play, and it can certainly be ineffective at times, their passing interplay is based on the players training and playing a lot together and anticipating each others moves. Its almost impossible to replicate this with an international team.

    Djourou wants midfield role

By Jonathan Chong on Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Defender Johan Djourou thinks that he could be more of an asset in a central midfield role, and with the departure of Mathieu Flamini to AC Milan, the youngster may just get his chance.

After a failed loan spell at Birmingham, the Swiss international thinks that he could adapt his game to the fast-paced nature of a holding midfield player.

He said: "Playing in front of the defence is the position where my qualities are expressed best.

"Arsène Wenger says this to me too. Unfortunately, we do not play a system which enables me to hold this spot, like Claude Makelele does with Chelsea.

"I have not had many possibilities of showing my midfield capabilities. I hope my chance will come in the next few years.

"My great concern today is not to know if I play in defence or midfield, in the team or on the bench.

"I am only 21 years old. I have learned much already and always learn.

"The situation will be different when I am 26 or 27 years old. At this age, one wants to be fixed on the pitch and be able to exploit his potential to the full.

"Wenger had assured me that I returned [from Birmingham] to play but an injury kept me out for three months - it is football."

I wouldn't say he has a best position, but yes, I'd say the team is built around Rooney as much as it is built around anyone. When he's out, their playmaking and creativity in the final third is so much poorer. He does get moved about to accommodate others, but he's still (I'd say) the most important and consistently effective attacking player they have and the one they find it hardest to replace. Many (Lrd) will say it is Ronaldo, but Man U have proven time after time that they can play well, against the biggest teams, without Ronaldo in the side. I can't think of a single major game without Rooney where they've played well and won (over the last couple of years).

I'd say the same is true of Man U, though their system is a bit more mobile and varied than Arsenal's. And Rooney, like Fabregas in the Arsenal team, is what makes them tick. People will say Scholes, and that's true in some respects, but Rooney's the one who produces chance after chance. Even in one of his poorer performances like the CL final he still played the pass of the game (crossfield to Ronaldo for the Tevez header) and probably the clearest chance of the game (cross for Tevez at the end of the first half).

I'd agree he's their most important attacking player. However, I would argue that he does that despite not having the team built around him - an even more impressive achievement.

Maybe 'built around him' is the wrong phrase and suggests he's the main man and everyone else has to fit in around him. That's certainly not the case. But you take my point - a club side can make up for a star player's weaknesses more easily than an international side can.
