Past £40 million is ridiculous when I can think of five players straight away better than him.

The sad reality is that this transfer fee is not just about Ronaldo's quality, but about his marketing potential. No doubt that if we buy Ronaldo our marketing revenue will multiply to unprecedented levels. This is partly why I think Calderon will gladly pay 90 milllion Euros if it came down to that, since over the years all this money will be recovered through marketing. A ridiculous transfer fee for Ronaldo would be seen as an investment that will pay off in the future.
Not to mention, it would ensure that Caldeon is reelected in two years, since enough socios are still very pissed off about the fact that he never got Kaka.

We're not taking one thing into consideration, that in the short term this would leave us in a finincal mess, we're already in big debt, and what worries me the most is his wages. If hes getting £200k/week it will defo cause friction behind the scenes.

It is a ridiculous fee. I don't think any player is worth that sort of money, but like you say his marketability is incredibly high, so I imagine Madrid will make that fee back and more before too long.

As stupid as he is, I can't see Calderon shattering the wage structure that remained even during the Galactico era and proved to be very effective. No player can make more than approximately 6.3 million Euros, and they must always give 50% image rights to the club. Even the signing of Zidane didn't change this.
If Ronaldo gets 9 million Euros per year, Casillas and Raul at the very least will have to be paid that much straight away, and not before long the likes of Ramos and Pepe will demand that as well. Calderon is a businessman above all, and he will surely see that this would be a horrible idea.

This reported fee will drastically inflate all Transfer fees in the future if this deal goes through. And without an equal measure of money going back into the game, this will be a huge detriment to some of the smaller clubs around all the leagues in Europe.

It's true, it's crazy how high the transfer fees are becoming. In the future players will just buy out their contracts using the webster rule. Like Wenger said transfer fee's wont exist.

Regarding wages, I'm not big on knowing them on weekly terms, but rather as a year wage.
From what I know, Robinho at this point still makes what he did when he first got here, which is around 2.5 million Euros. I guess that's somewhere around 40 thousand Euros per week? Not great on math but I guess it's somewhere around that.

De Rossi apparently signed a 7.5m a year deal, are you telling me he's earning more than any Madrid player? (Totti is on 8m a year)

Torrente's point about image rights is basically what makes this deal worthwhile. Imagine the club getting 50% of Nike's multimillions.

That's correct. Currently, our top earners are Casillas and Raul, who make 6.4 million per year.
However, the difference between Spain and England for example, is that after tax, players in Spain get to keep a higher percentage of this wage which usually ends up evening out with what the likes of Lampard make in England (edit: if you compare Lampard's to Raul's salary).
Not sure about how it works in Italy regarding these taxes though.

If we do sign him, how long should the contract be? The longest contract we've given out to new signing is a 5 year deal given to Becks and Ramos.

Re: Real Madrid C.F. 2008/09
I can see him getting extremely bored at Madrid after a couple of years, which makes why he's moving now when he's so young so baffling. What is he gonna do in 5 years time? move back to Portugal? Play in the MLS? Retire? Because I sure as hell don't see him staying at Madrid for the rest of his career.
The two seasons he's played at such a high level he had a lot of motivation and things to prove - Do it for his father, shutting up the English press after the winking incident, becoming the best and most marketable player in the world, etc. In a couple of years when he's won La Liga a couple of times and maybe even had another flutter at the Champions League then what next?
He's just moving far too soon IMHO.

Possibly, but Ramos is 22 and wants to retire at Real. They're two different players but it's not unthinkable that CR will stay at Real for 6-8 years.

"Cristiano wants to keep playing at Manchester United," Ronaldo's sister, Elma Aveiro, told the journalists. "Real Madrid keep making very strong advances for him. There is a lot of speculation in the newspapers all the time about where he will go and what he is doing but we know who he really is and what he is really up to. He wants to stay at United."

Next we'll get the guy who teaches tricks to his dog saying that Ronaldo wants to move to Madrid. Who cares what all these people are saying.
So far Ronaldo's "I have a dream" comments are the only truly reliable source we have. He even mentions Scolari in those comments, who we know has advised him to come to Madrid.
That being said, I would love it if he stayed at ManU. He can come to us in a few years when our squad is already strengthened.

Re: Real Madrid C.F. 2008/09
Super agent and transfer consultant Ernesto Bronzetti is convinced that Cristiano Ronaldo will join Real Madrid, with Julio Baptista joining Roma in order to make way for the Portuguese international.
The Giallorossi are currently snooping around for a striker in order to add some much needed fire power up front.
Baptista seems like he is on his way out of the Santiago Bernabeu and Roma are currently making enquiries regarding the Brazilian’s availability.
Bronzetti is confident that Baptista’s move to Roma will open the door for Ronaldo to leave Manchester United and join Los Merengues.
“Baptista is a player who Roma are interested in but I cannot say whether or not the club will sign him,” Bronzetti told Centro Suono Sport.
“Real are ready to sell the player because they are trying hard for Cristiano Ronaldo.
“In the end, Ronaldo will certainly arrive in Madrid. The Galacticos have too many strikers and so one of them is set to leave.
“Baptista wants to leave Real and thus Ronaldo is likely to go to Madrid.”
Real are on red alert for Ronaldo who has stated his desire to join the Santiago Bernabeu outfit.
However, United have played hard-ball over the whole affair and whether the player does move remains to be seen.
Roma meanwhile wouldn’t mind Baptista but his high wages may put the club off from pursuing any interest in him.
Are Roma the new Inter? Paying us for our rejects? Cicinho, Baptista, take Dudek aswell

Perrotta's position? I think he'd play upfront next to Totti fi we were to sign him, you know, like back in his Sevilla days. I have mixed feelings about him after seeing some of his performances at the Emirates a couple of seasons ago.
Let's not get into this about Gago, I already had a long argument about him with Super Madrid a couple of months ago. Long story short, he's $h!t.
