I just watched the Newcastle game, and we were perhaps a tad fortunate to win the game today. There was nothing fortunate about Given's penalty save - his reflexes were excellent - but Taylor actually handled the ball twice in the move that brought about Bolton's penalty, and if the referee hadn't given the first hand ball, I think there's a chance Taylor could have been sent off for the second; and Bolton sat and packed the midfield, and we didn't create so many clear cut chances. Still, we deserved the win I think, even if we needed a bit of luck in getting it, and there were a number of positives in the performance.
Given looks fit and back on form. Coloccini was really impressive in the centre of defence - he's slotted in perfectly, and hopefully the defence as a unit will only improve from here. I think Milner has started the season reasonably well - he looks lively at least, and he's getting himself on the ball a lot. Gutierrez had another good game, and he looks like a clever player to me - he isn't all running and determination - he can slow things down and pass the ball well too. Guthrie had a decent game again. Martins threatened, but just didn't quite manage to get on the end of a few heading opportunities, and hopefully his injury isn't too bad.
N'Zogbia had a pretty good game at left back today - today was the type of game where playing him at left back works, because Bolton were sitting a bit, and didn't play down the flanks much, so he got forward and added a dimension to our play, overlapping and putting in a number of our most dangerous crosses. And Beye looked a bit fitter and livelier than he did last week. Owen got on the end of Geremi's cross really well for the goal.
We passed the ball really well in spells today, maintained possession cleverly, and that was pleasing. I thought we lacked a little inventiveness; that we could have probed more and perhaps spread the play a little more sharply. And it is difficult to know at this stage how essential a playmaker might be in the long run - or whether with a more settled midfield, and with two strikers, we will create plenty, and so should focus on a defensive midfielder instead (Butt wasn't great again today - he passed the ball poorly, and his decision making wasn't great either - he overplayed in one or two dangerous situations, and booted the ball away when he had chances to play it out).
Anyway, the three points makes it a good start to the season for us. We are looking very united, and the new players couldn't have fitted into the team any better.
