Robinho to City was hilariously impossible until it happened. Although there were certain circumstances which made it more possible that it might've been at other times, I'm surprised, in the light of that happening, that people still think this kind of move is hilariously impossible. City have shitloads to spend, and other top teams may not (Credit crunch - not going to be as big a factor on Arab sovereign wealth than those with heavy debts and American/British owners) - means they could be able to poach a few more on the Robinho level. Maybe not Kaka, but who knows? If they offer insane money (£80m?) would Milan turn it down? Or the player? A massive payoff might compensate the shame of being out of the CL for a season or two (and I don't think it will be long before they qualify, if they've willing to keep spending at 20m+ level)
Overall, though I think it is defence they need to focus on. If they had Liverpool/Man Utd/Chelsea's backline with their attack, they'd be up near the top. One of their potential pitfall is if they spend all their money on the glamorous attacking signings - when what they really need is the equivalent of Chelsea's Carvalho, Cech, Makalele, Essien...
