    Russian international Arshavin joins Arsenal

Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that Russian international midfielder, Andrey Arshavin has joined the Gunners from Zenit St. Petersburg on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.

Arshavin, 27, who played a key part in Zenit’s UEFA Cup winning campaign last season, was also a member of the Russian EURO 2008 squad in which he scored two goals from his three appearances, earning him a place in the ‘Team of the Tournament’.

Arshavin won the Russian Premier League with Zenit in 2007, making a total of 232 appearances for his previous club, scoring 51 goals. During his time with Zenit, he was also part of the winning team that picked up the Russian Super Cup in 2008, the Russian Premier League Cup in 2003 and featured in the UEFA Super Cup victory over Manchester United in Monaco last August.

With 41 international caps for Russia, Arshavin has scored a total of 15 goals for his country. His versatility has allowed him to play in a variety of positions; the 2006 Russian Footballer of the Year started his career as a right midfielder, but has since played as an attacking midfielder and more recently has filled the ‘second striker’s’ role.

All documents were submitted on time. It just took the premier league too long to go through all transfers, that's the reason for the delay.

No, the post-deadline stuff is all about the FA's ratification process, on the basis that Arsenal, Zenit and the paperwork did get the paperwork in on time. And according to the Professor's sources, that ratification is now seriously in doubt...

no that's not fair. Our next home game isn't until after the International break. I think a fairer deadline would be the 25th Feb. With a buffer til the 1st of March just incase there are any hiccoughs.

    Suspect

I strongly suspect it's been fudged through by Premier League because this transfer is good for them in terms of TV money. If this was some unknown Russian signing for Fulham under equally last-minute, complex conditions, it wouldn't have gone through.

Hell, why not just send Stevie G to FA HQ and have him plead your case, they'll probably give you until the 25th of May...

    ok

If it's taken till this time today to sort it, the paperwork clearly wasn't all satisfactorily submitted before the deadline - and staff shortages due to snow had nothing to do with it.

There are basically two deadlines. One for all normal deals, and a second, later, one for deals involving big name players moving to teams at the top (Berbatov, Ashley Cole & Gallas, Arshavin).

If you don't get 4th you should do a Sheffield United and sue Arsenal and the Premier League for loss of a possible 30m in revenue cheers

The Sun had enough to make a story. Razz

    http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/article2202059.ece

    F-Arsh

ANDREY ARSHAVIN finally sealed his Arsenal move yesterday — amid concerns over why it happened 24 hours after the transfer window closed.
The £16.9million deal was confirmed at 4.50pm following a day of arguments over the paperwork.

But SunSport has learned that Arshavin’s club Zenit St Petersburg did not have the relevant documents lodged with the FA in time for Monday’s 5pm deadline.

And there were even questions about some of the paperwork submitted by Arsenal. FA and Premier League officials were not convinced the deal was in order and lawyers had to be called in to resolve the dispute.

It was argued by some officials that, as Arsenal had been tracking Arshavin for 228 days, there was no excuse for any deadlines being missed.

The transfer deadline had been extended because of the bad weather but Arsenal were unable to use that as an excuse because Arshavin had already arrived in London on Sunday night.
