According to the press, it was Chelsea. They made a bid weeks ago, AFAIK £40m.

Seems like HSV are close to signing Berg indeed, he supposedly is having his medical in Hamburg already.

    http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/bundesliga/startseite/artikel/511214/

Going by the impression he made in the U21 Euros, he is a very good signing. HSV are spending big this summer, looks like Hoffmann wants to make a big impression on the fans, who were angry about the whole Beiersdorfer situation. Looks like HSV will have a strong team for next season.

Jol basically wanted to be an 'English type' manager for HSV. Or simply put: he wanted Beiersdorfer's job in addition to coaching the team, he wanted to decide about transfers.

After the whole Beiersdorfer (sporting director) vs. Hoffmann (president) dispute at the end of the season, resulting in Beiersdorfer's demission, many HSV fans were angry, not just because Beiersdorfer had done a good job for the club over the years, but especially because of the timing. At the beginning of the transfer window, they had no sporting director anymore.

So many rightfully questioned Hoffmann, and wondered why Jol left anyway. Now HSV don't have a sporting director, so Jol could have actually gotten what he asked for.

But like I said, Hoffmann, who is a very ambitious guy, wants to make a big impression on the fans, so the whole mess, which many fans blame him for, will be forgotten soon. And so far, it looks like it is working well for him.

It seems like the Berg transfer isn't done yet. Groningen demands more than €10m now, and since Alex Silva is seriously injured and may not even play a single match next season, HSV are supposedly thinking about investing in the defence instead.

That's what the German press, the tabloid press in particular, is suspecting as well.

Difficult to tell if the rumours are true. There isn't really anything else the press can write about at the moment and Ribéry hasn't made an unequivocal statement about his future either. These minor injuries he seems to have every second day therefore leave a lot of room for speculation.

Would be best if he finally tells the German press about his plans and motivations, as no one really knows whether or not he would accept and respect any decision that doesn't allow him to leave Bayern.

Since all is still quiet on the Neckar front, some of the VfB fans are at their comic best:

Werder Bremen are interested in Cristian (26), a brazilian DM playing for Corinthians, as Allofs confirms. According to BILD, we are actually close to signing him even, he'll cost ~€6m.

    http://www.bild.de/BILD/sport/fussball/bundesliga/vereine/werder/2009/07/15/werder-jagd/auf-brasilianer-cristian.html

I don't know the player, is he any good? Going by the description in the article (fast, aggressive DM, dangerous shot and set pieces etc.), he would be exactly the type of player we need.

todo should know him, I'll ask him when he is back.

I agree that it is a very good deal for Inter. Lucio is a very good defender, I really don't know why Van Gaal doesn't rate him. Yes, he is right footed, and Bayern need more left footed defenders, but I'd have rather sold Demichelis than him to be perfectly honest.

Lucio's got at least 2-3 seasons of top football left in him. Interesting developing situation. Perhaps Ancelotti wants to keep Carvalho (who wouldn't! he, Alex, and even Ivanovic are better defenders than backstabber Terry FFS!). Mourinho wanted Carvalho, but it seems Ancelotti said no go Jose gets Lucio.

Ancelotti to offload backstabbing c**t Terry? He's not letting Carvalho go, and Alex and Carvalho is the best defensive pair at Chelsea by far.

    HSV signed Berg!

    HSV-Presseservice: HSV verpflichtet Marcus Berg
