Looks like the wheels are in motion. SSN is reporting that we have agreed a £16m deal and Toure will fly in from Austria over the next 24 hours.

Arsene Wenger has hinted for the first time that Arsenal’s Kolo Toure could leave the north London club this summer. The Gunners' longest serving first team player has been plying his trade in the red and white jerseys for the last seven years and was an integral part of the 2003-2004 ‘Invincibles’ which won the Premier League title without losing a single game.

City are thought to have been chasing Toure’s signature since January and came close to a deal seven months ago when the Ivorian handed in a transfer request. Denied a move by the Arsenal board and having regained his first team place and repaired his relationship with teammate William Gallas it was thought that Toure was ready to commit the rest of his career to the Gunners. However, with a reported £15m offer on the table and several defensive options able to cover the departure of the 28-year-old it appears Wenger is ready to do business with City for the second time in quick succession.

Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, Wenger revealed:

“We’ll see what’s happening in the next 24 hours … we have many centre-backs, seven centre-backs and I’m in a position where we have to play some in midfield… but of course Kolo is a very good player - we’ll see what happens in the next 24 hours.

“At the moment I’m more focused to get everybody fit for the start of the season.

"We are looking for opportunities as well, but at the moment we still have some pre-season games to see what we really need, and when the time has come we will do something … I wouldn’t like to set any time on that.”

The aforementioned Gallas, new signing Thomas Vermaelen, Swiss duo Philippe Senderos and Johan Djourou, Cameroon international Alexandre Song and veteran Mikael Silvestre appear to be the six other options available to Wenger, although reports in the British press claim that the French coach could replace Toure with Fulham’s Brede Hangeland.

As much as I love him £15-16m is a very good deal for us which gives us at least £40 million now. I'd expect Senderos and Eboue to also depart now. I'd be suprised if we didn't sign anyone else now.

Well obviously the fee we have got for him is pretty sweet but shocking at the same time, it's Man City though so I wouldn't expect much else.

COTR isn't wrong, 16m is ridiculous money for Toure, even with a Man. City valuation applied. And it looks worse when you consider he'll be reportedly getting over 100k a week in wages, and had only a year to go on his contract, and was possibly getting displaced by Vermaelen anyway this season.

The question now of course is whether Wenger will spend this 40m in transfer fees that Man. City have suddenly provided him?

    ok

Im sure goater will be very happy with him Laughing but like De Jong just a bit of patience would have saved a lot of millions. I don't see why they want him all the money and they choose a dodgy guy who's going to miss a month of the season for three times the price of his worth. Don't see why they don't sign the Fulham defender. Carvalho or something for 10 mill. but Toure for 16 scratch

I think another reason for the imminent sale of Toure is the progress Djourou has been making. He made massive strides last season and he's ready to start taking more reponsibility.

Vermaelen, Gallas, Djourou and Tweety Grr

Song and Sagna could also play there is necessary.

It's a lot for Toure - from outside view, he seems to have declined in the last couple of yrs and more pertinently for City, I don't think he's really the leader/organiser they need to replace Dunne. If they also sign someone of the Terry mould to play alongside then they would look pretty strong at back with Richards-Toure-Terry?-Bridge.

Exactly my thought as well. Maybe they are looking to Lescott or Carvalho to do that role.

Question will be whether Vermaelen performs - selling Toure will put more pressure on him to settle quickly.

His price tag suggests he will be an immediate starter but I would have ni qualms in easing him and starting Djourou for the first few games.

Good old Wenger - just when you think he's come round and realised that without the odd ready made experienced player it's virtually impossible to win anything he goes and sells two of Arsenal's best and more experienced players. No doubt they'll be 'replaced' by two youngsters, I'm guessing Bendtner and Jewroo.

I wouldnt say its ridiculous money for Toure, id value him at aroun £10-12m - seen as its us bidding for him £15m is about right. He is a solid player will good epl experiance, i might be wrong but i dont remember him making many major fuck ups and is an improvement on Dunne. I think he will be alongside Lescott or Carvalho (hopefully the later) and our defence would then be strong. Plus its taking another first teamer off a potential rival which further helps us.

I thought Arsenal were rich and didnt need all this money ?? surley Wenger will spend now.

He has been average at best since the last AFCON, got malaria or something, he it seems has lost his explosiveness which he used to make up any positional deficiency he had.
Not a good deal Goater, Lescott for 20 would be better.

And although the circumstances in this particular case strongly justify Wenger's decision to sell, to me it's yet again symbolic of Arsenal's reputation as a "selling" or "stepping-stone" club around Europe. Basically, if you want one of their players - no matter how important - you'll eventually get him.

Also a reason why they'll never quite be considered among the real "top" clubs of Europe. Unless they win trophies soon.

We will see mate in my opinion i think its a decent deal and i will be happy with him. CB is the hardest position to sign top quality players (who is available realisticlly at the moment ?), the price doesnt really matter to much to us and i dont think its too bad. He will improve our defence, therefore i see it as a good deal.

For 16 million? probably a lot. IMO his vakue is 8-10 but given he's got just one year left and it's african nation season maybe would be looking at 5-7. But you're paying 16. A few years ago some of the best went for 16. I mean what Vidic was 7 mill Alex not so much even Carvalho i think 20? that was awhile ago. Toure is not worth it but you can afford it. However im not sure it weakens Arsenal it does give them extra funds to in a way you're helping a rival.
