If Van Gaal really believes that, Bayern should get serious about their interest in Neuer, no? They were heavily linked to him in the past, but no news on that front in the last few months. He is exactly that type of keeper.

To an extent. Reina has good distribution, both from hand and with his feet. He initiates a lot of Liverpool counter attacks. Valdes, partly because of the team he plays for, is more of an '11th outfield player' in that he acts as a sweeper for Barcelona. Obviously he has more opportunity to demonstrate this than Reina because Barcelona play a higher defensive line. Goalkeepers who are quick out of goal and who can distribute the ball well are necessary for a team like this - so it makes sense that Bayern want to have goalkeepers who fit in like this (Arsenal need the same). I guess there are two distinct strands to a footballing goalkeeper; firstly that they are comfortable outside their box, have good awareness and starting positions; secondly that they can distribute the ball well with their feet over a long distance. Ideally you have someone who can fulfil both requirements.

Reina and Valdes are *most definitely* "sweeper keepers", or "11th outfield player", however you want to term it. In fact, Valdes and the current Barça system would be the perfect example of such a type of goalkeeper. Ready to run off his line when possible, supports the high defensive line, and comfortable with the ball at feet.
