I think there's more to it than that though because until last season Gago was showing good progression. He showed some good things under Capello and then had an outstanding end of the season with Schuster. Admittedly he didn't benefit with playing with Lass under Juande since they're quite incompatible, but that's no excuse for his horror shows against Barcelona and Liverpool for example. Lass managed to look a quality player while also suffering from that incompatibility. And this season Gago has looked garbage no matter who he's played next to or against which team.

And now he's in a very tricky situation because the club is unlikely to sell him or even loan him out given the fact that Diarra will be in ACON for a month.

Well there is a lot of truth in this but I wonder if he hadn't come later that a lot of the inconsistencies in his game particularly his passing might not have been so blatant? It could be he's just not got the ability for a top top club. I guess time will tell. But at this point there is no reason to think he will make it at Real Madrid.

If there is a good offer, personally, I would sell him. Yes, Diarra will be gone in January but that is an easy part of the schedule really. We are out of Copa del Rey and there is no CL until February so if we got in a real pinch we could just throw in Marcos Tebar or someone. He certainly couldn't do worse than Gago this year.
