There is a lot of theories and criticisms but for me the bottom line is Xavi was very regular. If he had a good game I doubt anyone would be talking about the wingers or the fullbacks or the substitutions, etc. Also, in spite of the colossal f*ck up by Casillas, Puyol, and Pique (even though nobody will talk about anyone but Kodak) on the goal it really was quite a lucky play the way the ball fell. Spain had plenty of good chances and a couple (particularly Pique) that should have been easy goals. No luck on the shot from Alonso....it was just one of those days.

Agree, but part of the blame here has to go to del Bosque too, Xavi just isn't so valuable playing as media punta, as when he is playing as a deep lying playmaker. I don't remember him having a great games at that position, he's also not able to influence game as much, as he can do from deeper position.Jaime wrote:There is a lot of theories and criticisms but for me the bottom line is Xavi was very regular. But come on Xavi floats and goes wherever he wants to.
The only thing I will criticise Del Bosque for is starting both Busquets and Alonso against Switzerland. It was redundant to have them both.

Yeah, but when you combine your 2 points (and both are really connected to each other) than we see why del Bosque should be blamed.Jaime wrote:stinger wrote:Agree, but part of the blame here has to go to del Bosque too, Xavi just isn't so valuable playing as media punta, as when he is playing as a deep lying playmaker. Also, does anyone have a theory why Capdevilla is always playing so passive for NT? He is very attacking minded left back at La Liga, yet he was very passive yesterday, and it was quite similar at EC 2008. Coach instructions? Worrying that his lack of pace will hurt him, if he will push forward too much?

Xavi's position had nothing to do with his performance imo. He was just poor.
Sacrificing Busquets for Navas or Mata would have helped.

More then the tactical problems which are there the mentality of the team will be the hardest thing. Perhaps this was the start they needed. They have been hyped to death around the world and this almost always affects teams. This defeat will be a big wake up call.World Cup 2010: Vicente Del Bosque 'Respects' Luis Aragones' Spain Criticism
The former coach feels his former team's mentality is wrong
Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has declared that he respects the opinion of predecessor Luis Aragones who said la Furia Roja's opening World Cup defeat to Switzerland was a result of over confidence.
Aragones declared that Spain lacked conviction and insisted that the favourites tag means nothing if they don't perform.
"The favourites have to prove it and until we do that we are favourites for nothing. Spain dominated, but never had the insight to manage the game physically or with a winning mentality. Spain never had the conviction of Switzerland. The problem is the team's mentality. Nobody wins a title before a game is played," Aragones is quoted as saying by AS.
In response, del Bosque said Aragones was entitled to his opinion as he stated that he will not criticise the former coach as it is not in the interests of the team.
"I have nothing to say, everyone expresses their opinions. He is a well known person in this group. He has worked with them, has achieved extraordinary success at the Euros. I can only show maximum respect their opinions," he declared.
"From me there will not be a single word on the last coach. There is not two Spain's, Luis' one and my one. There is only one Spain. I'm not here to convince anyone but to try to make things work as best as possible."

I was talking to a Catracho buddy, and he can not wait to beat España. I told him to be careful, it's gonna be really tough, but that his team has a puncher's chance to get the job done. We agreed that Honduras will beat the Swiss. So it's all about beating España for them Catrachos.
Let's see how America's #12 team fare against Europe's #1.
Vamos Honduras FFS! Kick some ass!

Love your optimism, but probably Hitzfeld will disagree. With both of you.

Watch Polish amigo, just watch. The Swiss and Hitzfeld are tailor-made for them Catrachos. First them Hondurans must beat España, at the very worst get a draw, and hope Chile gives them a hand by destroying the Swiss.

Don't think Spain should be ashamed by their performance. They played positively, and were just unfortunate to come unstuck against a very well organised, resolute and quite frankly, lucky Swiss side. Just one of those games.
Del Bosque does need to drop the double pivot however, very few (if any) side(s) will play positvely against Spain, so it's really not neccessary. I know Kas doesn't think it makes the slightest bit of difference, but I still don't understand why Spain's arguably most creative player continues to be punted to LW.
One of Alonso/Busquets need to go.

Each time you mention it you twist my words more and more from what I originally said. Now it's become "doesn't make the slightest bit of difference" I'm not a fucking idiot, I know Iniesta's strengths and weaknesses
I still maintain that I don't think it's some kind of Domenech-esque decision to play Iniesta on the left. He's still basically an attacking midfielder who likes to carry the ball, it's just that he's a bit restricted in his movement because he has one less direction in which to go. Sure, he's much better in the middle, but he's not a fish out of water from his left-midfield position either. In FIFA or Football Manager terminology, if his rating is 9/10 in the middle, then it's 7 or 8 (depending how he plays) on the left. Not a 10/10 vs. 5/10 like you seem to suggest.

This game reminds me so much of the Argentina-Colombia from 1993. Reinaldo Rueda was there too, and is now here setting up another ambush.

According to the papers today the lineup will feature Torres and Navas in for Iniesta and Busquets. So we'll see something like this:
Casillas
Ramos-Puyol-Pique-Capdevila
-------Alonso
Navas-Xavi-Silva
----Torres-Villa
So basically injecting a lot more pace and directness into the team, which was a main criticism from the Switzerland game. Good move in theory, let's see if it works.

Marca claims it will be this lineup:
(same back 4 and Iker)
.........................................Busquets........................................
.........................Xavi...............................................Xabi................
......Silva.................................................................Villa.................
........................................Torres..........................................................
Let's hope for the one you posted. I'm tired of Krusty's experiments. I'm sick of him trying to put "his stamp" on the team so he can say that he didn't just leave everything the way Aragonez left it for Spain to have success.

Slowly the line-up starts making more sense. Thought the 1st match it was very unbalanced. Who puts, Xavi, Xabi, Iniesta & Busquests in the same line-up in that way?
Villa wide?

The cartoon is just suggesting that Spain should position Sara Carbonero (above) next to the other team's goal. Presumably to distract the other team's goalkeeper instead of Iker.
