Well even when Villa is on paper the central striker for Valencia or Spain, he tends to drop to either flank and run down the channels. So by putting him on the left I don't really mean he'll play wide like a winger.

Re. Keita, yeah he did refuse to play there, but I don't think that's a good or bad thing. We all like to see players who give their all no matter what, but if he was shit as a LB and he knew he would hurt the team, it's better that he's honest. You're right, he's not very versatile.

My idea is indeed to sign a versatile midfielder to replace Toure. Initial thought was Raul Meireles, who was pretty good at the World Cup. But he's 27 and I'm not sure he'd want to be a backup. Plus no idea whether he's genuinely good defensively. And with Chygrinksiy gone, we do need cover at CB hence a more "backward oriented" midfielder. It's less risky playing kids in CM/AM than playing kids at CB.

I read an article about your loan which stated that your wage bill now stands at €262m - is this accurate? That sounds massive, and absolutely dwarfs even the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal.

I don't know the exact number but I do know that in the last 1 year, with contract renewals for some key squad members (Xavi, Valdes, Puyol, etc.) and the bonuses, the wages/turnover ratio has jumped to a ridiculously high 64%.

This is a serious problem and needs to be brought below 50% asap...preferably by cutting down the wages part, not the bonuses part Wink

It'll help that Henry is gone, Toure is gone, Marquez also hopefully will be gone. Those are some big earners, and will be replaced by youth team players or signings on much less money. Ibrahimovic is another possibility to leave.

So with an estimated 50m in the transfer kitty, then we should forget all about Cesc on focus on the RB and the DM

Yeah, because now that they've announced the 50m figure, it's the minimum Arsenal will demand. Silly move by the club.

Like you say, better to spend 25-30m on a top class, versatile DM, and then 5-10m on a backup RB, and pocket whatever's saved.

What do you think of the Javi Martinez rumours? Talented of course, but I'm not sure it makes sense to pay big money for a youngster and take away his regular first team spot, as he'd have to rotate with basically another youngster.

Not too keen on Javi since he would be very expensive. Looks like a good player though but I would prefer to take a chance on somebody less known, especially if Marquez is staying another season.

He is a good player who can cover both flanks and is two footed. A very practical player who any club could use really.

I think this signing indicates we'll see the formation from the Inter and Madrid games much more often. ie. Maxwell or Alves pushed up on the flank as an attacking winger, rather than playing as a fullback.

Also, I didn't realise he's two footed. Thought he's only left-sided. This signing is gradually growing on me...reminds me of 2003 and 2004 when Rosell was around and the club made some very clever signings like Giuly and Marquez for reasonable amounts.

Possible names from the youth team for the midfield:

Thiago Alcantara, Jonathan Dos Santos, Sergi Roberto y Martí Riverola

    And defence:

Muniesa, Fontás, Bartra y Sergi Gómez

It's also fair to say that the bigger named signings worked out better compared to the last few years as well.

True but for that I think the main explanation is the level of expectation from the big name signings, or the 'ceiling'. ie. in 2003 and 2004 the club was still rebuilding and the squad was full of garbage. In the last 2-3 years Barça is a team of the highest quality that is winning everything...much harder to make the right signings in this situation.

So as far as I can understand then Adriano is mainly supposed to cover:
    Abidal/Maxwell at Left Back
    Alves at Right Back
    Iniesta/Keita at Left central midfielder
    Xavi/Iniesta at Right central midfielder
    Villa/Pedro/Iniesta/Maxwell at left winger

Looking at that then the signing makes sense, however it is pretty obvious that the main problem is the Alves and Keita replacement

I think this signing will grow on me, even if it is not exactly spectacular. It also helps alleviate the over reliance on the kids in Barca Athletic. I am not quite convinced that they are good enough to reallly play in difficult matches

Yeah, kids should never be thrown in at the deep end. They need to be gradually brought into a team, preferably a winning one which is already settled.

Coming back to Adriano, here's something which is sure to make every Barça fan hope that he succeeds:

    http://sport.es/default.asp?idpublicacio_PK=44&idioma=CAS&idnoticia_PK=722138&idseccio_PK=803

Apparently Adriano was offered to Madrid last year (Mourinho was also interested in signing him for Inter), but Florentino vetoed the deal, allegedly saying "Adriano no es un futbolista para el Real Madrid" Biggrin

I would like us to keep either Caceres or Henrique this season. Caceres is not that bad, and a hell of a lot faster than the rest of our defenders. I think he had a good world cup.

Henrique had two very good seasons at Leverkusen and Racing, so I think it is time that we seriousely give him a go, and not just let him train 5 days and then loan him out.

Profiles of the 17 Barça Atletic players who have been called up for training. 7 have not been called up as they are part of Spain's U-19 squad:

Keeper Àlex Sánchez, defenders Montoya, Bartra and Planas, midfielders Romeu and Thiago and the striker Rochina

Oier Olazábal. 20 years old. Keeper. Guardiola knows him well after managing him in the 2007/08 season when he was in charge of Barca B. Safe and dominant, the Basque keeper, who arrived at the club three years ago from Real Union Irun is especially strong in the air.

Rubén Miño. 21 years old. Keeper. The local boy is agile, fast and very strong in the air, as well as being a specialist penalty stopper. After joining as a boy from Cornellà, he has come up through Barca’s youth teams.

Jordi Masip: 21 years old. Keeper. Another local lad, Jordi is very agile and has excellent reflexes. He joined the club from Mercantil in Sabadell in 2004 and played on loan at al Vilajuïga in the 2008/09 season.

Albert Dalmau. 18 years old. Right back. Physically strong, Albert can get up and down the pitch throughout a game and has an excellent cross. He frequently figured as a right winger last season with the Youth team.

Sergi Gómez. 17 years old. Centre half. The Catalan was a real revelation at the end of last season. His strong aerial presence and aggressive defending are matched by good distribution.

    Armando Lozano.
25 years old. Centre half. The Andaluz centre half joined from Llevant last season to bring experience to the back line. Classic defender – strong, committed a good man to man marker.

Marc Muniesa. 18 years old. Centre half. Muniesa is a versatile defender whose natural position is as a left sided centre half, but who has also played at left and right back under Luis Enrique. His anticipation, reading of the game and distribution are his strong points.

Andreu Fontàs. 19 years old. Centre half. Since switching from midfield a couple of seasons ago, Andreu has become a key member of the Barca B defensive unit, which he leads with great positioning and a sweet left foot.

    Ilie Sánchez.
19 years old. Central midfielder. After coming through the club’s youth system, he was farmed out to Cornellà where he matured whilst maintaining the typical aspects of a Barca trained player. Keeps possession well with intelligent movement and has learned to fit in at full back, as well as a wide midfielder.

Martí Riverola. 19 years old. Attacking midfielder. Joined the FCB Escola when he was just 6 years old and progressed through the youth teams as a prodigious goalscorer, before settling in as an attacking midfielder who loves to get amongst the goals.

    Sergi Roberto.
18 years old. Attacking midfielder. Caught Luis Enrique’s eye at the start of last season and is the prototype of a modern midfielder: good in the air and with both feet, strong and able to get forward and join the attack.

    Jonathan dos Santos.
20 years old. Attacking midfielder. Joined the club as a child. The Mexican youngster is creative and has improved the physical side of his game considerably. His long range shots and free kicks make him especially useful for the team.

Edu Oriol.23 years old. Right winger. Came from Sant Andreu and brought depth and incisiveness. Right footed, but able to switch to the left, Edu is a winger who constantly looks to take his man on, but is always willing to track back when needed.

Víctor Vázquez. 23 years old. Forward. This is Victor’s fifth season with Barca B after coming up through the ranks alongside Cesc and Pique. He can play in a variety of forward roles, but is most dangerous playing in the hole behind the strikers.

Benjamín Martínez,‘Benja’. 22 years old. Centre forward. The Catalan is a master at getting behind defences and is equally comfortable down the centre or drifting out wide. Signed from Europa two seasons ago, he was out on loan at Reus before Luis Enrique decided to bring him back.

    Jonathan Soriano.
24 years old. Centre forward. Key in last year’s successful promotion campaign, Soriano was the team’s leading scorer and an important figure in the squad. Skilful and sharp, he has refound his footballing ability since joining Barca.

Manuel Agudo, ‘Nolito’. 23 years old. Winger. The Andaluz winger is highly skilled and reads the game well. He played as a second striker with his previous club Ejica, but has successfully moved out onto the wing with Barca B. A right footer, he plays on the left and cuts inside with devastating results.

Looks like Henrique is taking the decision on his future into his own hands - according to Marca he won't bother returning for training today.

Kabore of Marseille as the DM backup? Can also play RB.

Atletico (A) on the 3rd day of the season Grr

At first glance it looks like a pretty balanced fixture list for us...no sequence of particularly tough games that stands out right now, and no home/away imbalance like last season where most of the tough away games came in the 2nd half of the season.
