Young simply isn't good enough and we are back in who is more average out of him and SWP territory.

Lennon hasn't done shit for England, i'm not being overcritical because he hasn't had long enough to be called a failure, although he has still had 8 more starts than Young. For their clubs Young is the more productive player and i rate him higher. <Ale>

He did have a good game to be fair, Croatia were wide open though. We seem to be basing a hell of alot on those two Croatia games in qualifying.

I would argue Youngs problem is his lack of tracking back. Also Capello wants all his players to press. Young doesn't do this when he has played for England.

I think the only genuine argument here is not that Young deserves to go to the WC, but rather, does SWP does to go to the WC anymore?

Really, its hardly a catastrophic failure on Cappelo's behalf and unlike Lennon and Milner, Young hardly presented a good case for his selection, and thus Capello went for the greater experience of SWP.

    Del Bosque?

Every man and his dog could see the obvious problem with Spain in the first half - no width, slow pace of the game, lack of urgency and a sense of complacency in the players. You didn't even need the TV stations' fancy graphics to explain it to you. Within the first 10 mins of the game I told my friends "this is looking like one of those typical draws or shock sucker punch defeats that Barça suffer from park-the-bus teams".

Why didn't he immediately instruct his fullbacks to go forward more? Why didn't he get Navas on for Silva and Cesc/Torres on for Busquets/Xabi Alonso at halftime instead of waiting till it was too late? Why didn't he give his players a kick up the backside about their slow complacent play?

We all know how Spain will play, but we all also know how others will play against them, esp. when an experienced coach like Hitzfeld is involved, who knows how to send out organised teams.

The way Switzerland were positioned and were moving across the pitch was exactly like Mourinho's Inter - 2 guys hang around up front for the counter (and the Swiss strikers did a good job of running into space between Spain's CBs and fullbacks) while the remaining 8 stay close together in 2 lines of 4, and move collectively to close space down in whichever sector of the pitch the ball is.

The warning signs were already there in the friendly against South Korea. Del Bosque should have been prepared to react quickly.

He does both of these for Villa, so he should be able to do it for England. But I agree he never really impressed in the appearances he had (although most were only bench cameos).

I personally fully understand why Capello doesn't rate Young - his main attribute is to pick up the ball, run, cross. Capello's trying to get the team to play a more patient, passing-along-the-ground style, and I can't see Young ever managing to fit into that.

Also, England already have a ton of direct wingers, most of whom are right-footed. So if you play a direct player both on the left and right, that forces Capello into a decision over one of Gerrard or Lampard, rather than being able to shoe-horn both of them into the midfield. Assuming of course Barry in midfield and 2 up front.

Also regarding the two up front, how much use is a good crosser of the ball when Heskey is just shit at finishing overall, and while Rooney is decent at heading, he's not exactly Carew. It would be ok if Young could contribute in other ways, but as I said above, I don't think he can.

Rooney was scoring tonnes of headers this season from Valencia crosses.

also, it's kinda nonsense to say on one hand Young can't fit in Capello's team because he's a direct winger and on the other say that Capello's already picked a bunch of direct wingers scratch

Fact is Rooney didn't play at the end of the season much due to his constant niggling injury. His first real game was bound to be rusty same for Lennon. These two will turn it on once they get into the swing of things.

That's what I mean...I think that Capello is willing to accommodate one direct player in the team but feels that 2 would be too much. And with 2, he would have one less spot to give to the established midfielders.
