Was a higher quality (if not as exciting) game than the Arsenal-Spuds game which was also excellent. Madrid just about deserved the win last night. I still think Barca will progress in the CL, but it will be tighter than I thought. Madrid are improving, even if they are dropping all their CF's to do it...

In the second half football was played.. Maybe that is why you think that the intensity dropped. You do realise that it was supposed to be football and not the five nations, right?

Fixed it for you
The game got boring in the second half for neutrals. Personally I still thought it was a good game but the people I were with and have talked too thought it became too boring as the second half went on. 2 reasons for this in my opinion:
1. Both teams had gotten several yellows after first half that resembled a real cup match
2. Barcelona played their usual style and Real Madrid tried to sit back too much and soak the pressure
The tempo wasn't that good as the second half progressed and especially in the 10-15 mins it got a little boring as I can't remember any chances or any action really.

Di Maria was excellent last night. He reminds me of Kuyt, though a lesser version obviously. But he works his feckin ass of for the team. Im a fan of such footballers, though im pretty sure they will dislike him in Madrid.
Anyone else yesterday noticed the function of the Barca bench for a change? Amazing how synchronized they all storm of the bench once a Barca player get's on the ground, or the ref gets a wrong call.

Are you kidding? I love Di Maria! People think because of the 'galacticos' and the like that Madrid only want glitzy footballers but Del Bosque, Camacho, Juanito, Redondo, Raul...they weren't exactly glamour boys. For me personally, I want players who play with guts and who work to go along with the quality. That has been my problem with Benzema all along.

Well Puyol was on the bench so he had the others well organised for the protesting.

abundance wrote:yeah. that's what the aesthetes don't get.King Pipita wrote:After the first match I thought it was clear that Mou was looking at the greater circumstance and yesterday proved that. We understood his tactics and formation better than the Saturday and Mou was also able to adjust the tactics, play Pepe in more of a floating wall role, etc.
The most important thing though was that at the start of Saturday's match, I think our players were still intimidated by Barca. In the CDR match, you could tell that we were no longer which is why the draw accomplished Mou's purpose for that match.
Madrid fans had to endure so many comments from the likes of Cruyf, the media, rival fans, etc. about how we were "supposed to feel" about Saturday's match. Last night showed that to have been encouraged from the positive signs that we saw on Saturday was nothing to be ashamed about.
One thing you can generally count on with Mourinho is that he learns something from every match. He took many lessons from the 5-0 and altered the team respectively, while making small modifications from Saturday's match as well.
We are still too defensive for my liking, but I can forgive for this season since the team is young and still needs to gel. In the following seasons I can envision spells of play such as the first 30 minutes of the 4-2 from Barcelona - Chelsea a few years ago, in which their midfield got pressured so badly that they got overrun with 3 goals.
Last night also showed yet again that Sergio Ramos is a CB, NOT a fullback. He hasn't had a good season playing as RB since the first Schuster season, whereas every time he plays as CB he looks top class. I don't care if he plays well as RB for Spain, Arbeloa should play there for the rest of the season.
I still think that even though they are not bad players, Busquets and Pedro are relative weak links in Barcelona. Yaya Toure would have done a much better job in covering the midfield gaps to neutralize those Madrid counter attacks while being much better on the ball, whereas a more skillful player would have done significantly more when finding himself in the positions that Pedro did with the ball last night. Surprisingly, Villa is still on a horrible streak of games. He's got the Torres syndrome at the moment, which worked great for us the last 2 games.

ohh yes please Ramos as CB! Agree on Villa and Pedro. Yaya was never very tactically disciplined but I am sure Mascherano would had done a better job covering the counterattacks.
For me, put Iniesta-Villa-Messi in attack and put Xavi-Masche-Busquets in midfield for the Bernabeu game

Wasn't referring to any poster here in particular, just to the general backslash and media pundits reactions after matches like that.blutgraetsche wrote:
Nothing to do with aesthetics (never expect that from Mourinho teams anyway), but more about effectiveness, at least for me. If hoofball worked, I wouldn't have said anything. This is football, there are a lot of different styles, and all of them are valid as long as they work and you win.
I actually agree with your points but you still have to account for the fact that Rome wasn't built in a day.
Real came from a straight trashing, to build effectiveness they first had to be humble in facing their fears and shortcomings.

I just want to see Masche flying into a two footed tackle on Pepe and Cronaldo! Best that he does that when he isnt playing as a CB

To be fair Xavi and Iniesta were some 6 years younger and less experienced that night. Xavi got robbed of possession by Lampard in the build up to the 3rd (Duff's) goal. Something you would never see today.

Guardiola suddenly decides he wants to be like Mourinho
Is he cracking up?
"We will train at the Bernabeu on Tuesday to get used to the long grass"
"In the Cup final we were unlucky to get a linesman with excellent eyesight, who spotted an offside of a few centimetres"
"I'm sure Mourinho would be very happy if the ref is Portuguese" (when asked about a rumour that the ref for Wednesday will be a Portuguese official)

After seeing the leniency of the ref in the Cup final, he probably decided he needs to fight fire with fire and also put pressure on the ref/UEFA.
But I don't agree, he should remain classy as he usually does in his press conferences.

Like the joke (in Catalunya): Why did the trophy fall? well, the trophy realised that it was in Cibeles and decided to commit to suicide by jumping in front of the bus

NO! I believe that a little controlled anger is a gift. Channel it properly to annihilate the ones who hate you, and everything is beautiful.
Pep will have seen that his players have been too passive relative to Jose's team. Pep NEEDS to fire up his team a little bit, and I like the fact that his players are reading that he's got a little anger in him. Controlled anger is a GIFT! I expect a different Barcelona for the CL tie, we shall see them at their very best, and they have to be since Real Madrid HAVE PEAKED!
