He's been decent in defense, kinda useless in midfield.

For dedication and physique, he's still head and shoulders better than the others in that lot, despite being 5+ years older, but that's not much of a feat.
And anyway this only means that he's the one who's got more to gain from saying "Thanks, cheers, I'll step aside" now.

When your only true justification for being on the team sheet is that the designated LB of your team is a complete joke of a defender, you should come to terms with that.

I have a question regarding Cristian Maggio - I really enjoy watching him (at least when he is not leaving the pitch injured in 1st halfs of important games), but since he is playing as wingback for Napoli, what is his position for Italy NT? Recently watching Napoli on polish TV announcers were saying that he is a lock to be a starter at Euro 2012. But as right back or right midfielder/winger?

He said that he's leaving because this season he sensed that he was starting to be considered a dead weight and he didn't want to sour the relationship with the club he loves and the city he lives in.

I'm still day-dreaming of a similar press conference from Lucio, Cambiasso, Stankovic, Zanetti, Chivu....

See, I don't get why you feel like that? If they retire, who should we keep? Is Ranocchia better than Samuel or Lucio, even at this age? Is Nagatomo better than Zanetti or Chivu? Is even Maicon better than Zanetti, does he even put half the workrate? Can Obi or Poli play the DM better than Cambiasso? The ironic part of your list is that those are some of our best players this season, just add the aging Milito and Samuel to that list and it will be complete.

I think blaming the old guard is too cliched at Inter, that is NOT the reason why Inter are not playing well. We lack direction, we need a long term coach, we need our president to decide on a strategy and stick with it. That's what is the issue at Inter, lets not blame our legends for no reason. You can have a Messi and a Ronaldo at Inter right now, and still not win anything.

I for one am not looking forward to the day Zanetti retires. Inter will not be the same without him.

It is part of a flat back 4. Most recently, Prandelli has put Chiellini at LB in order to allow Maggio more freedom to go forward.

6th straight win for Parma, pretty impressive finish to the campaign, could even finish above Roma and maybe Inter if results go,

Crazy match at Palermo, lead 2-0, surrendered to go 2-4 down, tied 4-4, Miccoli was brilliant again,

Theory I've heard is that for player coming back from serious heart issues starting twice in a few days span is quite risky.
