Nigeria have overlooked Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi for their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad after he failed to answer their telephone calls.
Newcastle >>> Africa

Very stupid. He could have turned down the friendly invitation in November and none of this would have happened. Ridiculous to go to that and not ACN. He could have done what Shittu did and not burned his bridges for World Cup. Keshi tends not to forgive such behaviour. Either turn both friendly and ACN down or neither, but to turn down the tournament and play in a now utterly meaningless friendly is downright stupid unless he thinks being capped once entitles him to a pay rise suitable for an international. He almost certainly won't get another chance now and that means no chance of World Cup for him. Don't see why he didn't just wait until after the competition to develop a taste for international football. Anyway Nigeria has better players up front and he'll have a great time warming (if that's the right word) your bench. Will be interesting to see how much he plays for you during ACN.
I plan to go to South Africa for it. Expecting gorgeous weather throughout.

Oh my god the world cup. The opportunity to play Costa Rica and then get KO'd. Maybe he shouldn't have played in that friendly, but he has made the smart choice in the end. The world cup is ages away anyway, they might not qualify, and even if they do qualify his premier league career being shot in the face won't help his already slim chance of playing there.

And you clubaholics should remember that these tournaments are scouted by the clubs and players signed. You think they observe African football by going there week in week out, or even South American. They go to the international tournaments and make recommendations that result in signings. These are shop-windows for clubs. I'll bet some players get signed as a result of ACN and more at World Cup.

When do English clubs ever buy Africans straight from Africa? We might see a player we're interested in at the ACN, but what we're really interested in is how they handle european club football.
