Who's the best English PLAYER in the premier league?

no it's walcott. for anyone who has played that 'many' amount of games, let's make that minutes in the epl and for receiving all those plaudits

My favourite English player? Probably Rio Ferdinand, for the Jaffa Cake incident, the missed drugs test and the awful, awful hip hop.

Its funny how even though he's been poor for 3 seasons, Gerrard has only outscored him once in those 3 seasons, last year.

Best passer in the league this year already, so he's doing something right.

I wouldn't bother trying with that one mate. When Lampard won the award last season, all people said was "well, it's easy to do short passes" but I hope Scholes has a good season this season (I feel that next season he may well only become a 'bit-time' player)

Good list and pretty much the right order but missing Ledley King and Peter Crouch. If you have to take 2 out take out Carrick (yet to prove himself) and Carragher (great defender but I feel king is bettter).

I cannot believe the number of people who put Ashton in the thread. This list is based on how they've performed? Well Ashton hasn't done anything special, although he might have the potential so does wlacott. Bent, Harewood and Johnson have all been better as strikers.

Yes I realised that there are some things which are not correct but for some reason are taken as truth if they are repeated often enough.

Seems like it has become urban legend that he is somehow really good and should be in the england team ahead of crouch, which I think is complete madness. I don't say that only for the moment with crouch's good form, but I mean he should not even be considered until he has proved himself in the EPL which he hasn't.

I think your mistaken in one aspect- he has proved himself in the EPL for both West Ham and Norwich- he just hasnt proved himself for LONG enough yet.

No one can deny he has looked a class act almost each time he has played for West Ham - there is a correlation between his injury and their poor form which cannot be overlooked.

Similar sentiments were echoed regarding a certain Lionel Messi who some heralded as the best footballer on the planet after playing a handful of matches. Deano has not played at th highest level long enough to possibly warrant so much praise, that is true, but a lot of credit must go to him in that the BIGGEST game of his career - the FA Cup final - he didnt bottle it, instead had a very fine game and outshone Peter Crouch by some distance.

That game alone probably explains a lot of the praise, certainly on these boards where players are criticised regularly for not performing against big teams. Liverpool in the FA Cup final is the top stage against a big team.

On a final note- its clear watching Ashton that he has the attributes to become a top player- strong, two footed, intelligent vision, technique, good in the air, clean shooting - the only real attribute missing is electric pace, but in that respect he is still far quicker off the blocks than Peter Crouch

As I said in my original post, he has potential, but he hasn't done anything special so far that he should be put in the England team ahead of Crouch, Defoe, Bent, Johnson etc, and in the EPL he hasn't done as well as plenty of others.

I think COTR is right, there is a favouritism of the board, like thinking kaka is even close to ronaldinho, and when this happens there is just a clear lack of objectivity.

Ashton is class - you can just tell he is.

Some players you can tell are in a ,ucky streak but Ashton has a lot of classiness about him as well as his physical attributes.

If he can stay injury free he'll be a major success

I think what COTR misses is just, well some players HAVE IT - they give you that buzz, that feeling. Ashton is one of those players where I don't have to look at statistics... I look at his raw attributes, and his mentality, and you can just tell that he's going to make it big.

He's one of those players that will treat a Match in the World Cup the same way he treated league 1 football for Crewe Alex'. Nothing fazes him.

Ashton Has it. Terry doesn't IMHO.

But anyway - It's not even about hype for me... throw the kid in and see what he can do.

Terry has had to work hard at his game, Ashton has a natural gift - he has managed to be the best player at three clubs he has played for now - pretty impressive.

When he played for the Hammers last season he was a class above

being the best player at crewe and norwich isnt so impressive. wasnt the best player at west ham nah.

That indeed is true. I totally concede that Ashton is one of those more favoured players on these boards (alongside the likes of Gallas, Messi, Kaka, Carrick, Xavi, Alonso) and as a result is probably overrated in pure terms;

it generally seems to be anything BUT the norm is deemed probably better than the reality, people like to think their opinions are unique, and then suddenly everyone is thinking the same thing and that opinion is suddenly no longer unique anymore... ie Kaka > Ronaldinho. Fairytale stuff considering the bucktooth one's past 3 seasons, but that is an argument for another time.

Ashton is still about potential. As TS says though, you just know when someone "has" it, and he is definitely one of those players.

Heading = Ashton
Hold-Up play = Even.

If anyone actually watched Ashton play for the U21's w/ Darren Bent, they'd have realised he was a cut above in that too.

I'm sorry - but I'll be brutally honest. Crouch will never be a consistent threat against the best defences. Ashton definetly looks like he has the top level stuff about him.

I get that certain players receive more hype than others, but for eery player that is hyped there is an equally large group of people disagreeing.

There's as many people on this board who think Terry's the best defender in the world, as they're people who think along the same lines as myself & Obispo.

There are also even numbers on the "is Drogba or Klose WC"... Lampard splits the board - as do Rooney, Robinho Henry and many others.

Suprisingly difficult to argue against that in fairness

Technique = Crouch
Pace = both not good enough for it to have an impact
Strength = maybe ashton but crouchs height gives him an attribute ashton cannot compete with
Heading = again maybe ashotn but with crouch's height his heading arguably becomes more of a weapon
Hold-Up play = well thats crouch for me

crouch will always be a threat purely because of his height... it is practically impossible to defend against a decent cross if crouch is in the box... for this reason he is always a threat... anyways crouch has scored about 30 goals since december.. if this isnt a consistent threat then i don't know what is...

all you have to go on with ashton is your own opinion and very little substance at this moment in time... as i said time will tell but to make concrete assumtpions like your quote above is total nonsense

You're talking about a completely different level though. No disrespect to Norwich, Crewe or West Ham, but if Ashton were to join Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea or Liverpool he wouldn't be the best player at the club.
