this season will tell... but he has been anything but world class for the past three seasons... still living off his reputation for me.. if he proves me wrong this year ill be only to happy to hold my hands up
Four seasons ago he was United's best player, as he was in the season they finished third to the unbeaten Arsenal and Mr Abramovich's Chelsea, when he was instrumental in Man U winning the FA cup. Last two seasons he's been a bit on and off, but look at who he's had to play with in that time, and last season he was injured for half of it. A huge part of Ronaldo's great form so far this season is because he and Scholes have finally worked out how to play together - ask LRD, who is a Man U fanatic. I remember discussing this with him on the old 606, the good 606, how Scholes and Ronaldo didn't seem to work well together very often. So far this season they've been running the show for Man U.
My favourite English player? Probably Rio Ferdinand, for the Jaffa Cake incident, the missed drugs test and the awful, awful hip hop.

Best passer in the league this year already, so he's doing something right.

also interesting how most of us forgot (or perhaps didnt actually forget) a certain michael owen

Yes I realised that there are some things which are not correct but for some reason are taken as truth if they are repeated often enough.
Seems like it has become urban legend that he is somehow really good and should be in the england team ahead of crouch, which I think is complete madness. I don't say that only for the moment with crouch's good form, but I mean he should not even be considered until he has proved himself in the EPL which he hasn't.
in the same way you just miss how terry 'Just has it' as a defender...TeamSpirit wrote:Agreed with 1Trick & Tweedle
I think what COTR misses is just, well some players HAVE IT - they give you that buzz, that feeling. Ashton is one of those players where I don't have to look at statistics... I look at his raw attributes, and his mentality, and you can just tell that he's going to make it big.
He's one of those players that will treat a Match in the World Cup the same way he treated league 1 football for Crewe Alex'. Nothing fazes him.

not going to spend all day debating ashton... he is young and has talent... i just find the hype he recieves on here totally baffling. time will tell

Having half a good season or 1 good season does not mean that a person has proved themselves at EPL level, e.g. Rickets. You say not LONG enough, I say UNPROVEN as yet.
As I said in my original post, he has potential, but he hasn't done anything special so far that he should be put in the England team ahead of Crouch, Defoe, Bent, Johnson etc, and in the EPL he hasn't done as well as plenty of others.
How come Bentley isn't in anyone future teams then? He's supposed to have skills and potential.
I think COTR is right, there is a favouritism of the board, like thinking kaka is even close to ronaldinho, and when this happens there is just a clear lack of objectivity.

I think he looks good, but when you consider how crouch is not rated by these people who overate ashton it is a little baffling.
There's as many people on this board who think Terry's the best defender in the world, as they're people who think along the same lines as myself & Obispo.Tweedledum wrote:I get that certain players receive more hype than others, but for eery player that is hyped there is an equally large group of people disagreeing.
crouch will always be a threat purely because of his height... it is practically impossible to defend against a decent cross if crouch is in the box... for this reason he is always a threat... anyways crouch has scored about 30 goals since december.. if this isnt a consistent threat then i don't know what is...I'm sorry - but I'll be brutally honest. Crouch will never be a consistent threat against the best defences. Ashton definetly looks like he has the top level stuff about him
Tweedledum wrote:Terry has had to work hard at his game, Ashton has a natural gift - he has managed to be the best player at three clubs he has played for now - pretty impressive.
When he played for the Hammers last season he was a class above
