    The Saga continues:

Don't you think he has a point though?
What was wrong with our buys? Medunjanin - class, Yannis - better than Charisteas, deRoover - good buy so far, vDijk - disappointed so far

So Ajax is through after that result.

Anyone know what pot they'll be in for the group stage draw?

How far can we expect this Ajax team to go?

Saw some pics of AZ's new stadium, not bad. It's a massive improvement over that things Sporting had to play in during the Uefa Cup.

Nice ground they have now ok

Not sure how big they are in Holland, but they seem to be doing good work in Alkmar.

How big are they in that sense?

Financially they are not a big club, and they don't have a huge fan base (compared to Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord)..

Before the season began - AZ sold some 'key' players from last season (i.e. Landzaat and Mathijsen) i started to have second thoughts of them doing well ... they proved me wrong (so far)

However 'new' crop of players have emerged and are proving themselves - i.e. Stijn Schaars(future Dutch talent, watch out for him) and Simon Cziommer -- they also have quality players in Shota Arveladze, Tim de Cler, Danny Koevermans and Demy de Zeeuw.

I can see them being a top 4 Dutch side in the next few years ...

It be good if we had AZ fans on these boards..

Yea, it just seems like an interesting club to me...althouh I'll admit I don't really like them much because of that Uefa semi-final.

But it is interesting to see that a club outside the big 3 from Holland is doing well, playing in Europe, and with a good new stadium.

Seems like a well run club.

AZ Alkmaar is a football club from Alkmaar, the Netherlands. It was founded on May 10, 1967 as AZ '67, the result of a merger of Alkmaar '54 and FC Zaanstreek. In the Netherlands the club is known as AZ, but internationally Alkmaar is often added.

Owing to the commitment of businessmen Cees and Klaas Molenaar, AZ '67 was successful in the late seventies and early eighties. In 1981 they became Dutch champions and UEFA Cup finalists. Things went downhill after the Molenaar brothers left the club. In 1988 AZ were relegated from the Eredivisie.

The involvement of businessman Dirk Scheringa in the late nineties marked the revival of the club. AZ returned to the Eredivisie in 1998. In 2004-05 they reappeared in the UEFA Cup tournament, advancing to the semi-finals. They also finished third in the Eredivisie that season, again qualifying for the UEFA Cup, after spending most of the season in the top two spots. A remarkable achievement, since AZ is financially not a big club and it does not have a similar fanbase like their Eredivsie rivals: AZ's home ground in the 2005-06 season, the Alkmaarder Hout, had a spectator capacity of 8390.

In the summer of 2006, the club moved to a new 17,000 capacity stadium, the DSB Stadion. Due to a larger than expected demand for tickets, the new ground will probably be expanded to 30,000 in 2008 by adding a second tier.
    ===============================================
Imo even today we can speak of a top 3, because Feyenoord has felt out of it. But for the long term? I cant see AZ holding this succes forever. Even Scheringa cant buy enternity...

    Tomorrow its KOEMAN VS KOEMAN...

Or P$V vs Feyenoord if you like. I hope we can snatch a draw there, but i fear the worst actually.

    The most likely line-ups:
P$V: Gomes, Kromkamp, Alex, Addo, Reiziger; Culina, Méndez, Simons; Affelay, Farfan en Koné.
Feyenoord: Timmer; Tiendalli, Greene, Bahia, Drenthe; Buijs, Hofs, Lucius, De Guzman; Huysegems en Charisteas.
