FA Cup quarter-final replays - Page 10 Empty Re: FA Cup quarter-final replays

    Post by S4P Mon Mar 19, 2007 11:40 pm

See, Jose is another who has pointed out Mikel for praise:

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho pinpointed Nigeria Mikel Jon Obi as key to his side's FA Cup victory over Spurs.

"The best team won," said Mourinho after Chelsea won the quarter-final replay 2-1 to set up a meeting with Blackburn in the last four.

"We were very solid defensive and had good control of ball possession, with Mikel Jon Obi key."

Mourinho added: "In the last two games Shaun Wright-Phillips in a new role has also been possibly man-of-the match." ok

Chelsea's FA Cup victory means Mourinho's side remain in contention for four trophies.

"This is a special season already. Yes we were champions over the last two seasons, but at the moment this is better than the others.

"Only this team with their character could survive - this team works and fights together."

Tottenham boss Martin Jol identified Spurs' lack of goal threat as the reason behind his side's cup defeat.

"It's a big disappointment but I can't fault our players because they did everything," said Jol.

"We lacked a cutting edge but they defended very well.

"I thought we were the better team, we controlled the game, I don't think Paul Robinson had a save to make."

Don't get me wrong, I think Mikel did OK, but there were better players on the pitch today. Jose's spot on regarding Wright-Phillips though. In the last 2-3 games, he's been near-perfect, and deserves a starting place. Seriously Jose, I know you like them both, but please drop one of Lampard or Ballack, give Essien a more attacking role, put Mikel in to shield the back 4 (I don't think Maka can do this consistently anymore), alternate Robben/Wright-Phillips, and then chose 1 of Ballack/Lamps. We will be 3x better.

Its not hard to look good when playing next to players like Lampard and Ballack, who do nothing.

Dont think he is better than Carrick at the moment, he probably will be in the future. But I am very happy with the £12m that Chelsea gave us, as Carrick is a better player at the moment as doesnt get Sent off all the time, miss training and loves money, with football as a recriational hobby.

A bit unfair. Whether you rate them or not, they do cover an enormous amount of ground (particularly Lampard, who is up-and-down the middle of the pitch non-stop).

I agree, thats why I said
shazlx wrote:Though I can understand that Carrick has made a significant contribution to that title and Mikel may not have necessarily been as good.- also he did not want to play for them

I would also add that if Mikel had the extra year that he missed he may well already be better than Carrick- but he can only blame himself and his advisers.
IMO had he gone to Utd he would have the strength of Diaby and the composure of Fabregas (maybe not exactly to the respected degrees) He really would have been the true heir to Vieira

Actually a bit harsh as Lampard does run around alot and works for the team, but in terms of short intelligent passing he doesnt do that much of. As for Ballack he is just awful, every non Chelsea fan cheers when Ballack is on the team sheet instead of Robben. I dont see how Mourinho doesnt see that Chelsea play so much better when Robben is on the pitch.

Drop both and pay 442, come on you know you want to, with Sheva now lokking like a striker of former pedigree and Drogba the 'one man gang' why do you wanna waste what you got. Mikel and Essien can handle the Midfield. Essien- pace, power, endurance; Mikel- hight composure and passing. Could be a good thing. Why do you except mediocrity when you could have it all. Don't worry bout defensive cover you have John 'honestly, world class' Terry.

I personally think Diarra and Mikel were chelsea's best players. SWP only came to life in the second half, Drogba worked hard but wasn't good, sheva played well in the 2nd half and scored a fantastic goal, Terry and carvalho didn't have much to do apart from the 1st few minutes of the 1st half and the dying minutes of the 2nd. mikel was the man: he nullified lennon for most of the match, won all those long balls that were played to Berbatov, intercepted a lot and was very calm and purposefull in possession.

I still remember his performance in the U-20 world cup where he outplayed the whole argentina team that included Messi in the final but his team lost due to some naive defending( giving away stupid penalties). he was outstanding in that tournament.

I remember saying on the old board that Essien will displace Maka in the holding role before the end of the season but it looks like Mikel is going to do that.

    SWP----------------------Robben
    -----------Sheva-Drogs----------

    ?

Only problem is, that midfield will not score many goals.

What a team! (J.Cole foe SWP) and i'm actually quite jealous. This team is better than ManU's - well if they played more games together and The fullback's got a good understanding with the wingers (and in the case for Diarra - more experience.

Only problem is, that midfield will not score many goals.

SWP and Robben won't score goals? silent
    Essien can't shoot from distance?
With that strikeforce do you need the midfield to score?
This team would win so many corners/ freekicks Terry would have more goals scoring opportunities so you loose some and you gain some.

BTW does the midfield score anyway, other than Lampard, Ballack doesn't score much.

S4P wrote:I don't have any patience for fans who jump onto the field and attempt to cause trouble or harm to a player/person. It's just a shame that nobody kicked the shit out of the fucking wanker.

Happy with the results, very angry with 1 or 2 incidents. Firstly, how on earth nobody has smacked Chimbonda before is beyond me. I remember him getting Nicky Butt sent off in the Spurs-Newcastle match, and throughout the entire match he was whinging about foul play, and dissent. Ironically, he seems to be able to get away with screaming abuse at the linesman. Double standards.

Next thing: Berbatov. Sure, Ricky was stupid to attempt to tackle him from behind, but ffs! Never a pen. Also thought that bar one or two moves, he was very average (maybe it's because he was up against England's finest). Silly yid cunts in the pub couldn't stop singing his praise all night though.

Finally: Drogba. Jesus christ, you're about 6'2" and 14.5 stone, yet seemed to be bullied off the ball easier than Wright-Phillips (who I thought played well again).

God knows where the ref got all that injury time from at the end. For a moment, I thought we were playing extra-time.

    Anyway, ratings:

    Cech 7
    Diarra 8
    Carvalho 6
    Terry 7
    A Cole 7
    Mikel 6
    Lampard 6
    Ballack 6
    Wright-Phillips 7
    Drogba 6
    Shevchhenko 7

1st off, well done Chelsea - I suppose that's what you paid £51m for (Sheva & SWP). The 2 strikes is what seperated the teams. Robinson had literally fuck all to do otherwise. It was a very even match but we were too cute going through the centre & Chelsea just had too many bodies there - They suffocated us - Mikel in particular I thought was Outstanding, protecting the back 4. Completely marked Lennon out of the game & was MoTM for me.

I liked how Chelsea's players started dropping like flies in the last to mins - especially the 2 in injury time - and Jose has the cheek to wonder why they took more time than what was on the board. There should've been AT LEAST 6 mins, maybe 7. Chimbonda did earn a booking for that - just like Drogba earned a booking for backchatting in the 1st half. When it comes to the issue of intimidating officials - those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

It was a stone wall penalty - Carvalho went to ground in the box and missed the ball, and caught Berbatov - can't see a problem with that Bam

    Now to the agendas. Smile

Obi - No amount of HARD WORK from the frontline would've won us this match. Don't remember Berbatov actually getting a shot on goal last night, & good for Chelsea that he didn't because unlike certain ugly Dutchmen he won't shoot straight at an off balance 'keeper from 4 yards out (2nd leg, Barcelona). Yes Berbs wasn't great - but unless he produces 9/10 every week you will criticise him because you're Jealous. "kuyt scored against Chelsea?" Just remeber it was against a Central defence containing Paolo Ferreira.ok

Kimmy - SWP really proved his price-tag today Erm I still maintain he's a midget version of Djibril Cissé - I saw him go 1 v 1 with Lee on 3 occasions, and he didn't beat him once, let alone get a good delivery in. Great strike for his goal, but did little else. Needs 3 or 4 touches to get a ball under control and still he can't dribble for shit. Not to mention that he would've been a lot fresher than Lennon was for this game. As for Lennon - yes his final ball was poor, but he never stopped probimng, and unlike SWP he beat his marker(s) on at least a couple of occasions.

*On the fan - yes he was out of order - and yes he'll get his (well deserved life ban from football stadia), but a Chelsea fan came onto the pitch as well - and a lot of people would be wishing that he connected with Lampard's head. You could tell that the fan had downed one too many - and a tense match like this, with a lot of pride at stake will bring these kind of reactions out.

    My Ratings.

    Robinson - 6.
    Chimbonda - 7
    Dawson - 7
    Rocha - 7
    Lee - 7
    Zokora - 6
    Jenas - 7
    Malbranque - 6
    Lennon - 6
    Keane - 5
    Berbatov - 6.

Yesterday's game confirmed for me how utterly one-dimensional Lennon is. Every time he got the ball he did the following: Run diagonally to the intersection between the byline and penalty box, cut-back, run back up to the corner of the penalty area and drift the ball into the six yard box.

When Lennon learns to put a cross in, rather than running in to the box and inevitably losing the ball, should he even be considered for England squad.

In fairness that was one of his poorest games all season and he did look lost. I wouldnt call him one dimensional personally, based on his performances over the season both on the left and right.

at 19, has a lot to learn though definitely, looked positively scared of Chelsea's brickhouse defenders.

    Lennons to do list -
    1. Learn to cross
    2. Learn to beat a defender with skill, rather than pace.

FFS Diarra had him in his back-pocket even when he tried to knock the ball past him and chase after it.
