I don't think Messi is the best player in the world at present. He is not yet the best player at Barça still. But I think that will change. Maybe not next season, even if he has contributed more than Ronaldinho whenever he has played, but definitely the season afterwards.

With regards to any other player currently gracing the world stage, he is more advanced than any other at that age was.

so Messi's goal > Maradona's goal because Maradona used 12 touches with one foot only (left) whereas Messi used 9 times the left and 3 times the right foot (including the last touch which netted the ball)?

Messiah wrote:What a goal take out the world cup factor and its very much the equal to Maradona's goal if not Better.

and people say Ronaldo it the best player in the world and he could score a goal like this if he tried 100 times against Sunderland.(though he is having a great season)

Because Ronaldo is currently the best player in the world. Sunderland are pretty good at the moment, he couldnt score a goal like that because a Sunderland defender would have fouled him. Keane wouldnt let strikers run half the length of the pitch. Ronaldo and Messi are different types of players, only Giggs, Ronaldo (Brazilian one) and Robben score goals like that.

Ronaldo couldnt score some of the goals Rooney has scored and neither could Messi, does that make him better than both of them?

Ps the world cup factor is a huge factor, better players, bigger occassion and it was a close game, won by cheating and a moment of supreme brilliance. Barca won 5-2 against Gefate. Messi's goal was one of the goals of the season, but you cant compare it to Maradonna's, if he scores a goal like that against Chelsea in the CL QF/SF then you can compare them.

Ronaldo was playing at PSV at 19 (well, in fact he just switched clubs at 19 years and 10 months which is what Messi is now).

I don't think Rooney is quite as good. What exactly does Rooney do that Messi can't apart from the physical side?

I am with Rez here, even tho I am probably one of the biggest Messi fans on this MB...

The big fat bucktooth was better and had achieved more at that age than Messi. At 20, Ronaldo was WPOTY, at 21 he was WPOTY twice. Remember, WPOTY is SO MUCH reputation driven that you need to have 1-2 tremendous seasons before you can have a hope to becoming one. At 19, Ronaldo had that kind of a reputation... he was HUGE at PSV, and his season at Barca. (He is HUGE now, but thats a different kinda huge Wink)

At ages of 17-19, Ronaldo scored 42 goals in 46 games for PSV... at the age of 19-20 (year 2006), Ronaldo scored 34 goals in 37 games for Barca (no one has scorded 30+ goals in La Liga since) and won WPOTY. Thats the age Messi is now. The following year, Ronaldo won WPOTY again. Messi can only match that if he wins the WOPTY this year AND next. No chance.

He could do anything, score free kicks, long rangers, tap ins one and ones, individual goals and was completely both footed, he even had the tricks of Ronaldinho. The only thing he couldnt do was maybe head the ball, but he could score 40 goals a season, without scoring a header.

If he hadnt got injured he would probably have gone down as the greatest player ever. He was that good.

Can Messi score a thirty yard volley into the top corner, can he chip the goalkeeper from 30 yards. Messi is a way better dribbler, but Rooneys passing, shot technique and middle distance shooting is better. I think Messi will become the better player but at 19 Rooney was pretty special.
