Goal hero Messi spares a thought for Maradona

Lionel Messi said he hopes former Argentina great Diego Maradona returns to full health soon, the day after scoring a goal similar to Maradona's classic solo effort against England at the 1986 World Cup.

The 19-year-old Argentine dribbled from inside his own half to score Barcelona's second goal in a 5-2 semi-final first leg victory over Getafe in the Copa Del Rey on Wednesday.

'Diego has always backed me and I hope he gets well soon. The whole of Argentina wants him back well again because we miss him,' Messi said after the game.

Maradona, who sunk England in the quarter-finals in Mexico, is recovering in a Buenos Aires hospital from abdominal pains, and has recently been treated for alcoholic hepatitis that doctors have linked to heavy drinking.

Messi received a pass from Xavi in his own half, dodged two players and sprinted towards the Getafe goal. He then swerved past two more defenders before rounding the keeper to score from a tight angle.

'I saw the space and went for it as I always do. I saw Samuel (Eto'o) was in a good position to do a one-two as I neared the area but with two defenders nearby, so I took it on myself,' he explained.

The goal dominated the front page of Thursday's sports newspapers. Diagrams of the numbers of players passed and the distances covered were thrown up to make minute comparisons with Maradona's effort.

The fact Messi's was in a Copa Del Rey semi-final as opposed to a World Cup quarter-final was perhaps the only detracting factor from the youngster's strike, though he carried the ball at a greater pace.

Barcelona-based daily Sport said 'Messi Superstar' on its front page while the Marca led with 'Messidona.'

Barca coach Frank Rijkaard described the move as a 'work of art.'

The only dampener came from Getafe coach Bernd Schuster, when asked about the goal in the post-match press conference.

'I can't see the goal through the eyes of a spectator. We should have stopped him before he got to the area even if it cost us a yellow card. You can't afford to be so generous,' said the German.

Come on then, let's see what this Atkinson goal is that's so great.

And yes, it would get into my top 10. I don't know why, because I bet if you analysed it, there are other goals that might be technically better. But when I saw this goal go in I just sat there with a big smile on my face and my hands on my head. A special moment.

both amazing but maradona's wins for a couple of reasons: 1) the context of the game and the ill feeling between the two nations at the time, 2) i remember gary linekar saying that the pitch that day in 1986 was one of the worst he had ever played on as it had only been relayed a couple of days earlier and it was like playing football on a slippy carpet!

nice goal by atkinson, pity he was $h!t 99% of the time... messi has been threatening a goal like that for a while now and i wouldnt be surprised if he did it again sometime soon. he has to be the finest dribbler playing currently as the ball is fooking glued to his feet!!!

Cule's right, if this was scored in the Premiership it would be getting much more hype.

And TRWP/IAWeasel, I know Getafe aren't the greatest team, but they are the best defence in La Liga this season. That's something, at least.

    scratch

Nice finish, but you can't even compare the two. Atkinson just had to dodge one player (though repeatedly). Messi went past 4, and at full speed. Atkinson at full speed (I assume) is so ponderous-looking. No wonder Messi's looks better to everyone, he's much more graceful when running and the goal appears more aesthetically pleasing.

There's probably quite a few goals out there where a player has dribbled passed 3 or 4 players and scored. Didn't dinho do it twice against real last season. McMannaman did one from his own box, as did Weah.

I don't really rate these goals because the defending has always been bad when it happened. I always think why hasn't that guy made a proper challenge. Messi's goal is nice but one guy ran alongside him without putting any pressure on him until right near the end, then the other guy dived in, so there were only 2 challenges on him. That was bad defending.

What about his initial touch to get away from that one guy who then chased him all the way. And it wasn't "the guy ran alongside him without putting any pressure on him". Messi had so much pace and kept the ball shielded so well that the guy chasing him just *couldn't* put real pressure on him or make a tackle.

Occassion and oppenent comes into play with most goals.

I'd take Bergkamp's goals against Leicester and Newcastle for technique and imagination over the Argentina goal.

However it's obvious which would rank higher overall.
