My Sunderland can beat Chelsea - Keane
    tribalfooball.com - April 18, 2007

Sunderland boss Roy Keane says his current team would survive in the Premiership - and even give Chelsea a run for their money.

Keane watched the champions' FA Cup semi-final against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday and the former Manchester United captain said he saw nothing to fear in a Chelsea side who are still chasing an unprecedented quadruple.

He said: "I went to the game just hoping to see a decent game and have a look at Chelsea, see what their manager is all about and pick up different things. I left before extra-time but overall I have to say I didn't think it was a very good game. I thought it was poor.

"I looked at both teams and thought: 'We could have either of them' - just as I looked at Middlesbrough and West Bromwich a few months ago.

"We could take them and I saw nothing to worry us. I have watched plenty of Premiership teams recently I reckon we could take a few of them."

Sunderland better do well next season or he will look a twat. Plus i take it this mean he wont need to spend much money if they are already so fucking brilliant. What a wanker he should just keep his big mouth shut.

No chance unless they spent a huge amount or make very very wise signings, either way its very unlikley.

Sunderland always do very well in the Championship but struggle to do so in the EPL, whilst other teams that narrowly attain promotion fair better than them - very strange.

All depends on the business Sunderland do in the summer, and it will be a true test of Keane's mangerial skills, if any.

It's from triballfootball so how reliable iis it? He probably said something like 'We can give Chelsea a competitive game' which he is within his rights to say and then it gets misquoted to this.

For what it's worth, I don't think Sunderland will do much better than they did last time, even with a manager like Keane.

2 seasons ago, they ended the season with 105 points, and everyone was saying they'd do OK (not necessarily top half or anything, but OK), yet they ended the season with 19 points, and only 1 home victory. For what it's worth I think Sunderland will start the season well, but as injury numbers start to rise, they may start sliding down the table, ala Sheffield United, whose manager is very Keane-like.

As for us, they'll give us a game at the SOL. At the Bridge? No chance Ale

I am pretty sure we beat Fiorentina, anyway he went to Turin took a look at the WPOTY and thought I can have him and he did.

As for Sunderland, if they buy some players they will stay up, he has transformed the fortunes of the club completely. I doubt they will beat Chelsea but stranger things have happened, like Roma beating united 2-1 Razz

Why is everyone jumping on Keane's back for believing in his team?

Hes hardly going to come out and say 'if we get promoted we're gonna get smashed'

Mentality is as much a key issue as quality, and of all players Keane knows that better than most.

Rui costa was a fabulous player, its no embarrasment to lose a dual in a one off game to him...

But everybody has poor games, even the most consistant which Keane invariably was...

I'd be interested to see you name 10 matches where Keane 'was laid down on the turf and urinated upon'

I could find one instance for any footballer where they have lost a dual once... its the players who win overoverwhelmingly consistantly that are remembered and become true winners.

Hence Keanes trophey cabinet (and can proudly boast being an integral part in actually acheiving those trophies), in comparison to Rui Costa's.

Keane won nothing of note - the Prem meant nothing pre 2004/2005.

Showed how much of a great player he is, 2-0 down against a team that had played in the last 3 CL finals away from home, he is booked and knows he will miss the final, lesser players like Totti would have spat at someone and started sulking. Keane however dragged his team to the final, Rui Costa can only dream of being so influential in a big game.

Just watched the goals on youtube and keane did a Gerrard and played Batigol clean through on goal, I think we lost 2-0. however we beat them in the next match 3-1 at OT Keane even scored. Batistuta scored a great goal if I remember correctly.

Rui Costa was a fabulous player, but i guess a player who spent the best parts of his career (lets be honest he didnt exactly light up the san siro) as a big fish in a small pond (similar to your other idol Lampard II W/OUT deflections) so natuaraly a CL group stage game was a fitting ocassion to show the world his ability. It took him another 5 years to actually do something in a big game.
