I don't like thet fact people now see us as this little club, because Darren Bent didn't want to join us...

So Scott Parker is a more obscure name player than Darren Bent then?

Deano - I don't know about fanbase but I would have assumed that WHU and Spuds were comparable.

However a player is unlikely to take that into account when joining a club, he's concerned with how much he'll earn, how much he'll play, and whether he'll win trophies and get into Europe.

At the moment I see Spurs as a bigger club than WHU because they've got more chance of getting into a CL spot or winning a cup than you have.

Right, this is what happened with Darren Bent:

Him and Curbs flew back from their holidays, Bent agreed terms and was set for a medical. Curbs then flew back to Spain. Magnusson was ready to announce the signing. Bent even told his family he was joining us. At the last minute Bent pulled the plug on the deal. Magnusson didn't even know until 2 hours later!

I don't know what could have caused it, BUT apparently people are suggesting Spurs have something to do with it (allegedly tapping up).

Good for West Ham. If they spent 18 million on him, I wouldn't be able to stop laughing my head off, considering that's the likely price for Henry if a move happens (lots of if's, i know, but still a funny situation to think of).

Its a sorry state for the English game with some of the prices being quoted at this moment in time. Managers are going to look to or continue to look further abroad for talents.

I've been a big critic of these prices, but tbh some of the recent ones are reasonable - 5.5 for Barton, 7 for Parker, etc. Now it's the wages that are going through the roof.

Just the once Deano - 1997-98... The others, I assume you mean seasons like 1993-94 (points deduction - eventually overturned) and 2003-04 (18th at Xmas) I never felt in threat of going down... we were just horribly mediocre.

I'm not going to get involved in the other stuff as I firmly believe that we have 3 strikers who are better than Bent anyway (Maybe even 4 if the fat Egyptian ever gets himself back in condition)... and £18m would make us a laughing stock of Europe.

Sell Defoe for £10-12m and get Anelka in, I say ok

We have far bigger priorites, like Left Midfielders/ Wingers, and a good backup CB (not so bullish about Rocha working out).

    Magnusson reveals Bent heartache
By Graeme Bailey - Created on 16 Jun 2007

West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson has revealed his disappointment at missing out on Darren Bent.

The Hammers agreed a £17 million deal with Charlton for the England striker, but the move collapsed after the 23-year-old shunned the move to Upton Park.

"The whole situation left me very frustrated," Magnusson told the Sun.

"We were so close to signing Darren and thought everything was in place to conclude what would have been the biggest transfer in West Ham's history.

"I was really looking forward to making an announcement to our fans as we continue our plans to take this club forward and challenge the best teams in England.

"West Ham acted in good faith in discussions throughout with Charlton, the player and his representatives.

"The deal we put in place seemed to work for everybody concerned. Throughout the negotiations all the signs were positive. Therefore I was surprised when I learned Darren had decided not to join us.

"I feel let down and disappointed. But it is time to move on.

"In the aftermath of this I have been encouraged by the reaction of the West Ham supporters. I visited some of their internet chat sites.

"They appreciate the efforts we made and they are less disappointed than I thought they might be. The view seems to be that perhaps this wasn't the best deal we could do at this stage.

"I'd like to think this experience will eventually stand us in good stead. There's no doubt about it, lessons have been learned."

We cant be expected to buy every young british talent ffs. Only one club can sign each player, therefore, the chances of that club being Arsenal are low.
Also, we were strongly linked with Carrick and it was only at the last minute we decided not to buy him.
Defoe isn't even Arsenal quality, and we would be lucky to recoup the fee that we would have paid.
