He's brought the cheaper option now in Pennant.

Re: Bent turns down West Ham
Maybe its because Simao has been an estanlished player whereas malouda has relatively recently burst on the scene?
Malouda has only really been regarded as a top player for the last two seasons -this season in particular - he's scored something like 13 goals in the league I think

Since when does Pennant play on the left?
@ Tweeds
Yeah i suppose, it would be less of a gamble with Malouda, than before.
But there would be a difference in playing in Ligue 1 and EPL.

The story is, the offer of £10/11million was accepted, and Simao was about to sign when Benfica demanded another couple of million an hour before the window closed. It wasn't that we couldn't afford him, but we weren't going to be manipulated like that.

I thought the story was that the proposed move caused too much uproar with the Benfica fans and it got a bit violent so the move was stopped?

That might be the case, but I'm sure they asked for more money at the last minute.

OK - lets test it - how many other fans of CL clubs would be happy to sign Bent for £16m?
That was way too easy a question for an excuse to be made. How about this.
How many fans would change their predictions of where Liverpool finish next year when hearing they've signed Darren Bent? How many of those would thus see Liverpool finishing second, let alone first if that occurred?
No one will give two yes's, meaning the signings a purposeless quest for mediocrity.

maybe...Simao, Gonzalez and Mascherano were all very difficult transfer sagas, but at least we're not in that Stevens enquiry thing. We're a clean club.

Do you honestly see your position changing to 2nd through the signing of Villa or Torres though?
the left mid position is of a far greater importance to Liverpool.

Re: Bent turns down West Ham
Finishing has been the biggest problem over the past few seasons, so in my opinion a quality striker would really be the most important signing, closely followed my left and right sided wingers. I don't rate Pennant.

Disagree Tweedle - that's like saying Arsenal need strikers because TH and RvP were injured. We'll have Harry Kewell and Luis Garcia back from injury next season and they can do a job at LW.
The bald fact is that we took the 2nd highest number of shots of any team in the EPL and had the 14th highest on-target rating.
We need a striker (not a forward).

I think the left midfield problem is just as important, I really want to see Kewell go, I know you like him CT and Roger, but keeping him is a big mistake IMO and if he's the guy we have to rely on at left mid next season we will not win the league title.

Well Bent is a great finisher - I can't even believe some of you would prefer torres to Bent - Torres is infamous for his finshing FFS!
And Villa is more of a forward than a striker anyway.
So who exactly is it that you lot want? Eto'o? Realistic? doubtful...

Harry Kewell is going to be awesome next year. You can quote me on this...He is probably going to be one of our most important players.

Don't get me wrong Luis I'll be disappointed if we don't sign a LW. But I disagree with Tweed that it's 'of far greater importance' - equal maybe.
But I'd say ST>LW>RB>CB>LB>RW>CM>GK is the priority order for me.

If he gets close to his Leeds form he can be a phenomenal player for you, great crosser, great header, great finisher, great technique - the guy has got it all, though he seems to have lost some pace from his Leeds days

Re: Bent turns down West Ham
Agree with that Roger, only thing that worries me about LB is we will rely on Aurellio but what if he just had a few odd good games and crumbles under the pressure? we only have Riise then who to be honest is an awful left back

If Kewell is better than Pennant, like I say he is (and it's a fact, not an opinion) Then the right hand side is just as important, unless Gerrard will continue to play there.

Still better cover than we have for RB or CB.

It's like me saying the same with Saha. Both got brittle bone disease though.
Malouda would be a great buy, not sure why you are penny pinching.

How is it?
Right midfield:
Pennant - showed his class towards the end of the season, I don't care what you say he was one of our best players towards the end, against Arsenal and Chelsea he was top fucking class, in the final he got too much criticisism, if we had had a striker who can stay in the bloody box then Pennant would have got 2 assists that night. Pennant can do a job on the right for us
Gerrard - Steven gerrard, enough said.
Left mid:
Kewell - injury fucking prone, not good enough, I'm not having another season of his shennanighans again
Riise - not really a first choice left winger
Garcia - likewise but class, should really play behind the striker

Re: Bent turns down West Ham
Kewell has so much more class than Pennant. Pennant's a pace merchant, who can't cross, and he doesn't have a footballing brain.
My argument is that we have a problem on both flanks, because of Pennants absolute uselessness. I hope Gerrard plays on the right next season, but he obviously prefers the middle.

How the hell is Pennant useless? I'll believe Kewell is class when he fucking plays more than 3 games a season

Your buying Villa/Torres on an expectation of potential poor performances, potentially not adapting the league and general disliking of the English life style. You do however expect them to make a difference in the long term if they click, something I doubt Bent would do in tandem with other average strikers.

I'm not factoring in negative expectations.
Villa and Torres are both 'fowards', not strikers per se, although Villa's scoring record may lead you to beleive that he plies the trade of a striker, he does not.
Liverpool do not need another forward, they need a striker - if Kuyt was to play with either torres or Villa there is a very viable risk that they would step on each others toes. Bent would not - he would play off the last defender, he would be a poacher, he would offer far more aerial threat than either of Villa or torres and he would chip in with 15+ goals in the EPL - which is EXACTLY the type of player that Liverpool need

Might be better off selling Kuyt. Using the money to buy Bent.
Then buy someone like Villa.
