Losing was a blessing in disguise. The key to any kind of "success" in Brazil is we go in with absolutely no expectation or pressure to do well. With nothing to lose is, when England tend to do their best. Pre 1990 and 1996, the last two tournaments England did anything of real note in (admittedly with a lot more decent players) they were stumbling through build up friendlies and terrible form. Nobody gave them a cat's chance in hell. Ultimately,  these build up friendlies mean almost fuck all, even if we'd have won this one,  what would have been the chances of taking that form or team into the summer in 6months?  Zero. The best way to enjoy England is to avoid having any hope or expectation from them for at least the next 5 years. That way they may pleasantly surprise us, like they did in the two crucial must win games when everyone had written them off, but then got their hopes up afterwards.
well there were no expectations going into euro 2012 (the newspapers even went as far as putting headlines like "This time we don't expect to win, honestly!") but it did no good. As soon as England beat Ukraine we started hearing things like "Believe" and Rio tweeting "England will do Italy, true dat".

Hodgson shouldn't be testing new players at this stage. He should be fielding his strongest team and letting the players build an understanding with each other.

Rio and Campbell were the best partnership i've seen for England, I expect we've been over this before but for me Rio is one of the few players that lived up to their hype. If Cahill ended up as the new Rio(he won't) I would be happy with that, but it's like saying Carroll will be the new Shearer, or Gibbs will be the new Ashley Cole.

Actually, most people thought England wouldnt get out of their group, considering we had France, Sweden and Ukraine. I actually thought euro2012 for England was a success, give the utter dissaray heading into the tournament.

And we all know your thoughts on Rio, but it really doesn't need to permeate into EVERY post Laughing

He's only really played in 2 international tournaments. Not that great for a so called great defender.

to be fair the competition is not all that great in terms of the best CB partnership you've ever seen. All the others involved either Terry or Adams.

Fresh snow on the ground after a blizzard and -22 c this morning Rolling EyesVery Happy  Will England get steam rolled again in the next friendly or is there some brains in the three lions camp after Chile showed what ingredients we're missing. They also lost the plot for a while in that game did you notice how fiery and dirty they became in those moments. Softness was mentioned about us before the game. WOW thats a three kittens pattern for 50 years. Back to the brains in the England camp if there was one option open spreading the game quickly and accurately, it would of helped switch pressure back on them on a weaker flank which they did this to us often.
Every side has a weak link in the chain England has to stop being proper become more aggressive and exploit every side no matter how good they are. Crap its a war!! Stop playing for your country your playing to survive!!

Puro's approach to this will be a brilliant psycological exercise.

Does he go in all guns blazing? The overhyped English players, the media. When does he play the conspiracy theory, christian card. Pre kick off? Post kick off? At half time!?

And his coup de grace, the "corrup fuckos". Surely, to be wheeled out after the game. But Puro is nothing if not depressingly predictable unpredictable

I'll never forget the infamous Scotland - Peru game at the 1978 World Cup. We were humungously over confident, but Peru really took our pants down & gave us a good thrashing.

squad for Denmark. think it's safe to say players who ain't in this squad ain't likely to be going to world cup (barring Jagielka & Jones who are injured).

there's a few who should count themselves lucky to still be picked considering how little or how badly they've played this season (Cleverley, Lampard, Defoe, Townsend). Cleverley especially: bereft of form or confidence & we really don't need to be bringing the Man Utd negative vibe which he seems to epitomise. any of THudd, Osman, Delph, Barry, Cork would've been a better and more deserving pick

    --

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker (Cardiff City), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Southampton), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).

Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Toronto FC), Rickie Lambert (Southampton), Jay Rodriguez (Southampton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Daniel Welbeck (Manchester United).

still it's not all bad: in players like Ox, Wilshere, Henderson, Sterling, Sturridge, Lallana we got some fresh & positive options for midfield & attack

hope they get their chances and show their form for England.

yeah it's pretty ridiculous he still gets in, but at the same time it's hard to think of any outright strikers who've missed out & there's a good chance he won't make the cut when it's down to 23.

here's the highest scoring English strikers who didn't make the squad: Carlton Cole, Crouch (6), Hooper, Frazier Campbell (5), Berahino (4), Bent, Gayle, Agbonlahor (3)

there's Andy Carroll, but he's barely played this season.

I'm pretty sure an England manager hasn't watched a north east club in years, apparently Hodgson stays down south, and Capello never came up here. That said, Johnson can fuck off, he can't play shit for 2 years then expect an England call on the back of a few games.

to be fair to Hodgson, there's not exactly many players to watch. only regular at Newcastle is Williamson, while Sunderland got Colback and Johnson (oh and Wes Brown but we'd have to hope he's no longer considered for internationals)

Hodgson has an excuse, while Capello was around though we were playing the most English players in the league. It's another reason why it's laughable that we got so much grief for filling the squad with frogs.

True. But the fact he picks people who aren't performing at all and haven't for ages suggests there's something going on.

Didn't pick Johnson because "we know what he can do". So why are the likes of Cleverly and Milner in?

Why not just be honest and say he doesn't think he's been consistently good enough?
