The Next England Squad Empty The Next England Squad

Post by debaser Thu Jul 01, 2010 5:25 pm

It's a lull between World Cup games.

Just wondering who people would like to see in the England setup for the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Obviously we don't know how players will start the season, fitness, etc, but there are two potentially tricky qualifiers in September: Bulgaria(h), Switzerland(a).

Who would people pick? Imagine everyone's fit (except Hargreaves; I have to embrace some realism) and picks a WC-style squad of 23. And a team too, if you like Ale

    I'll give it a go.

    GK: Hart, James, Robinson
    RB: G.Johnson, Richards
    LB: A.Cole, Baines
    CB: Jagielka, Dawson, Lescott, Shawcross
    RW: Lennon, A.Young
    LW: A.Johnson, J.Cole
    CM: Milner, Huddlestone, Gerrard, Rodwell
    ST: Rooney, C.Cole, Agbonlahor, Defoe

    --------------Hart
    G.Johnson-Jagielka-Lescott-A.Cole
    --------Milner-THudd
    Lennon----Gerrard-----A.Johnson
    ----------Rooney

I want to get rid of Gerrard, but think we'll need to stick with him for a bit longer..

Revive the sometime Everton partnership of Jag-Lescott at CB.

Still don't really like CM...but that's where we're lacking, tbh. Need to start trying likes of Rodwell, maybe Cattermole and eventually perhaps Wilshere/Delph Erm

O'Hara's not a bad call. Perhaps one of him/Cattermole can be trained up as the DM. Either would certainly give more energy in CM.

That what Middlesbrough does to people, I guess.

O'Hara's rumoured to be considering playing for Ireland, so we should probably give him a cap to stop him being poached.

Look why Dunga doesn't pick Dinho. It's not because Ramirez offers more or can do a role better. I prefer not to have some characters around for obvious reasons. Some people still are a little unsure on what is more likely to be a successful team. It is clearly not working just lumping the best players together.

How about the EPL and the FA find one club that is willing to use all English talent. Give them a break with funds and start using the side for coaching new football methods an elite England team opportunity within the frame work that exists already. Do you think an idea like this is possible to sale.

We should take a leaf out of Nigeria's book and suspend the national team.

You're picking squads with GK's and defenders who can't pass and pace merchants up front/on the wings - it will just be the same old shit.

The England team will probably be the same in 2 years

Ferdiand, Terry, Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney probably Glen Johnson and 4 others.

I think we've decided collectively as a nation that Joe Hart and Adam Johnson are/will be World Class

so that leaves 2 places up for grabs. Milner and Heskey.

Players I'd like to see groomed include

    Gibbs
    Richards
    Dawson
    Lescott
    Rodwell
    Huddlestone

all this talk of Green, Parker, Warnock, Carrick etc makes me nauseous.

We should keep an eye on some of the teenage imports that top clubs have brought in at 14/15 and maybe one of them can be our Ozil.

Why won't Hargreaves be fit? He's not currently injured....

Anyway, factoring in that ridiculous rule, I'd like to see:

    -----------------Hart-------------------

    Johnson---Jagielka---Cahill----Cole

    --------Huddlestone--Milner---------

    Lennon-------Gerrard------Johnson

    ----------------Rooney--------------

Some of that squad is clearly highly unlikely to actually happen in the real world.

I certainly think that Milner is now a shoe in somewhere in the squad.

Capello is a conte if he doesn't now pick Hart as his first choice keeper. James' England career is now over. He'll be too old in 2 years, Green and Foster are both error prone. Robinson is less injury prone but his role as first choice is untenable after that Croatia game. Its GOT to be Hart. He's so much better than the rest its painful. IMO he'd have saved either the 2nd or 3rd Germany goal - or both.

Johnson also should definatley be in the squad and should at least get a subs appearance. I still am a bit bewildered that he wasn't picked for this WC given that he did more that the rest of the team in his 5 minute cameo against Mexico.

I think its also time to try Gerrard in thw hole behind Rooney. Both had poor WCs so it would be futile to persist with their previous positions.

In defence, I suspect Capello will still opt for Terry and Ferdinand when fit. I think Jags and Cahill provide adequate replacement though, + they aren't twunts.
