Re: Darren Bent agrees to join Spurs...
I don't see height as a problem for them, they don't play air-balls much. Occasional crossing yes, but most of the play is on the ground. I even think him and Saha will provide a good tactical partnership if they want to go 4-4-2 or if Rooney is injured/suspended.
Anyway, it does seem like Portsmouth or West Ham are most likely.

Defoe is good enough to play for anyone. 18 goals in all competitions this season as the back up striker isn't bad is it? If Defoe plays first choice he'll score 20 goals.
I reckon Man Utd might bid for him once it's public that he's available.

I'd take him at Liverpool as a direct replacement and improvement on Bellamy, at least more effective / efficient.

I think alongside Crouch he'd be brilliant. But there's no way you'll drop Kuyt. I think Defoe for £9m/10m is a better option than Torres for about £23??

I think we would only go for Defoe if we sold Rossi. Potentially, Rossi can be a better player than Defoe in the future IMO.

You shitting me, 18 goals this season? That's incredible for a backup striker.
One of the most underrated players on this board it seems. Scores goals, got good technique, very nifty and good on the turn, can beat a man one v one, can scores from outside the box, has proven himself very capable in the Premiership - where's the problem?

Tottenham have signed England striker Darren Bent from Charlton for a club record £16.5m.
Bent, 23, passed a medical on Thursday and signed a deal for up to six years with the transfer fee being paid in instalments.
He said: "Tottenham have a lot of young English players
and it's a young squad, it's a squad going forward and that's the
direction I wanted to take.
"It's exciting times for me and Spurs and hopefully I'll show what I can do."-----------------------------------------------------

Re: Darren Bent agrees to join Spurs...
Good OPTA article on Darren Bent in comparison with Robbie Keane, Defoe and Berby
Opta Audit: Darren Bent
By Alex Dunn - Created on 27 Jun 2007
It seems increasingly likely that Darren Bent will opt to make the short move across the River Thames from Charlton Athletic to Tottenham this summer. The England forward has already attracted a firm bid from West Ham United but chose to decline the offer. The chance to move to Martin Jol's top five outfit seems to tempt the former Ipswich man a little more, however.
This Opta audit compares Bent's performances for the Addicks last season with those of the three main Tottenham forwards in 2006/07, and the results are interesting.
Firstly, looking at goals and the regularity of them, it is apparent that Robbie Keane was the main man last season. The Irish striker scored a goal every 150 minutes on average, making him far more predatory than Bent or Dimitar Berbatov. In their defence, however, the latter pair played much more often and both were the undoubted fulcrum in their respective side's attack. Furthermore, Bent outscored all of the Spurs strikers in 2006-07, despite playing for a side that finished second bottom.
Player Goals Mins per goal
Robbie Keane 11 150.1
Jermain Defoe 10 192.8
Darren Bent 13 220.5
Dimitar Berbatov 12 226.4
Berbatov gained a fearsome reputation in his first season in English football and much of that was due to the decisive impact he made on games. As seen in the table below, the Bulgarian scored four match-winning goals last season, one more than Keane and Bent managed.
Player Winning goals
Dimitar Berbatov 4
Robbie Keane 3
Darren Bent 3
Jermain Defoe 2
When it came to chances, Bent took exactly one in five last campaign, an excellent return. The only striker at Tottenham to better that was Keane who converted a superb 29% of his opportunities, truly a great return from the Irishman. Jermain Defoe, rumoured to be leaving Spurs if Bent arrives, had the poorest goals-to-shots ratio of the four players in this study.
Player Chance Conversion
Robbie Keane 29%
Darren Bent 20%
Dimitar Berbatov 15%
Jermain Defoe 14%
Finally we look at creativity, where Berbatov was peerless, having created nine goals for Spurs, including four for Defoe and two for Keane. Bent managed only one for Charlton but the Addicks were virtually a one-man team in 2006-07 with the onus on Bent to score the goals, not create them.
Player Goal Assists
Dimitar Berbatov 9
Robbie Keane 2
Darren Bent 1
Jermain Defoe 0
In conclusion, it seems clear that Darren Bent would be a quality addition to the Tottenham squad, though it seems infeasible that Spurs could also keep Berbatov, Keane and Defoe on the roster. If Bent does sign then it seems likely that his England colleague Defoe could be set for an exit.

Bent>>Defoe
The chance conversion stat probably matters the most of the lot - the others are all dependent in the end on the number of opportunities you have and Spurs' strikers are likely to have had a lot more scoring opportunities than Bent did

In March when they gave their second keeper (whashisname) a coupe of chances he instantly made the back look much much better.
you sure? in the 05/06 season he was one of Spurs best players in my personal opinion
Robinson is predictable now, as you know that he'll struggle with long shots and set pieces, and flap at at least a cross or two per game.
Robinson is $h!t and always has been. During the 05/06 season he had one of the lowest shots/save ratio in the Premiership. He's Cr@p and has been for a long time, but being England no 1 meant he got the hype treatment.

I agree with all that - but Defoe never seems to look up at the right time.
If there's a pass to be made that gives a team-mate a simple finish or a good chance, he wants to do it all himself.
When Keane was injured in December/January - he started 13 games in a row & responded with 9 goals. If a coach can make him more of a team player (on the pitch, as I've no problem with him as a pro) then he'd be a great striker.
The people who bitch about his England record - how many games has he actually started? As opposed to pointless 10-minute cameos? As far as I'm concerned, his England record reads:
5 starts, 3 goals.
It's a sad day for Spurs (in relation to our tradition) and yet more proof that the EPL is becoming an athlete 1st, footballer 2nd league.
------------------------------------------
Oh, and Frenchie is spot on about Robbo - the only reason we had such a great defensive record in 2005-06 was because the defence gave up so few chances.
@ Parky - Robinson was much slimmer in his early days at Leeds - that photo must be from his last season there, were he did his best to become Kevin Pressman mk.II.

Someone posted the stats earlier though - Bent's shot accuracy and goals/shots ratio is much better than Defoe's - nd this season Bent's been a bit off form whereas Defoe has had one of his best seasons yet.
He's also had Berbatov or Keane playing alongside him rather than an ageing Hasslebaink or Marcus Bent
