books have been written in Spain about this, Pele.

I personally believe there are two particular reasons for this.

At this level I think technique is more important than physique and Spanish players possess plenty of technique but often lack the physique required for senior competitiveness. Spanish clubs are renowned for their academies and they are always churning out plenty of interesting players.

Second reason is that in La Liga few of the Spanish players are burdened with carrying the team, a task that is usually left to foreign stars. Therefore, when you join all the Spanish players up, they are left rudderless so to speak and do not have any leaders.

That being said, I feel Spain has suffered its share of bad luck during tournaments in the past and should have done better in certain tournaments like WC94 (should have had last minute penalty when Tassotti broke Luis Enrique's nose in QF), Euro96 (outplayed England on their soil), Euro2000 (missed last min penalty against France in QF) and WC02 (outrageous refereeing against South Korea in QF).
In those teams there were leaders present and tough players like Hierro, Luis Enrique, and others.

Not for me. Ghana looked impressive in the group stages, a very technical and athletic team. It took an excellent performance of our youngsters to beat them, and they beat the strong Colombians also.

Can see them go far in this tournament.

Brasil must be kicking themselves how they lost to Ghana with that very soft goal my gosh! On the other hand the Ghana goalie stopped EVERYTHING Brasil threw at him, MOTM easily.

I knew it was gonna be extremely difficult to eliminate Tajikistan. History shows it's very complicated to KO upstarts like these. Recently in Euro '04 everyone saw how difficult it was for Portugal to KO upstarts England.

Ghana will be really really tough, but that's why they play the games. <Ale>

lol! Comparing Tajikistan with England. You really are comedy value!

Well done on relying on penalties to beat a country only 1 in a 10,000 people would be able to find on a World Map lol! Biggrin Guess we wont be seeing Peru at the WC anytime soon Biggrin <Ale>

Hi, commenting on Spain's performance today, I thought they gave a masterclass in how to wear your opponents down and can't see them being stopped in this tournament personally. Very Happy

2 players stood out, Bojan and Fran Mérida but for different reasons.

Bojan not only because he scored 2 brilliant goals but also for the fact his movement and ability to spin away from his marker was near perfect. His shooting technique is great as well. Hard to believe he just turned 17 Shocked

Mérida because he has a diverse range of passing and was able to maneouve space for himself by doing feints and all sorts of little tricks here and there

The line-up was like this + my ratings for each player:

    -------------------------------de Gea(6)--------------------------------

    Alex(6)---------Sergio Rodriguez ([8])----- Rochelo(7)---------Morgado(7)

    Jordi(5)---------Camacho(7)-------------Merida(9)----------Isma Lopez(7)

    -----------------------Bojan(9/10)-------------------Aquino(7)----------------

    Subs
Iago Falque (7)- Should be starting ahead of Jordi
    Illarramendi(6)
    Yelco(6)

    -------------

I agree with what toon h's assessment on Spain and the difference between youth and the senior side. France should be a good test but I'd rather we played Ghana or Nigeria as they're sure to have stronger athletes in their side and its important we test ourselves against such players
