Xavi is still awesome, but the problem is this season he's been doing a lot of what golsud says - gets the ball, and goes backwards or in circles trying to protect it from an opponent, then eventually passes it to the defenders. As I said a few days back, it's as if he's swallowed a malfunctioning GPS device.
Earlier he was a genius at receiving the ball, and quickly releasing it up the pitch, maintaining our possession and also a very high rate of ball circulation. I guess part of the problem is the midfield and attack just doesn't run as much anymore, or maintain their close positions as well as they used to. It's very spread out right now, and our passing game is not fluent at all.
