In a quite sensational attack, Spanish newspaper AS has called Giuseppe Rossi 'a traitor' and believes Italy did not deserve to beat the USA...

Having read the article, the writers at Goal.com have managed to sensationalise something that isn't there.

Legrottaglie seriously needs to fuck off. The untalented, homophobic Jesus freak. He's thinking of writing a book, who in their right mind is going to buy this dick's book? Whats next? "My 5 minutes in the national team" By Matteo Ferrari?

Well it's quite obvious that Lippi should be sacked now, and the new coach will hopefully start selecting the proper Italian talents instead of the frauds.

    G. Rossi is the positive to come from this tournament, he now deserves to start matches

    Candidates?

My perfect choice Ancelotti obviously, Spalletti maybe. A good cup pedigree is required i think, although maybe Robby Mancini would be a good choice?

    Starting Team?

    Buffon
    M.Motta, Gamberini, Chiellini, Santon
    Brighi, Pirlo, D'Agostino
    Cassano
    G. Rossi, Balotelli / Iaquinta / Gilardino.

Obviously Ancelotti would be great, be he is contracted to Chelsea now. I suggested Mancini in the confed cup thread - he is the best Italian coach who is out of a job. Other options would be Vialli or Casiraghi.

I like the side you posted. If Aquilani gets fit, he should play aswell.

Sadly it would happen only if hell freezes over. Sad

The scary thing is that at the moment Lippi is selecting the wrong squad AND ALSO picking the wrong ones in that squad AND ALSO playing a hopeless module.

For the tactics, one could still hope he realizes when can't play any from of 433. Not only it doesn't fit our forwards, it also leave our defence too exposed.
At the beginning of WC 06, he wisely considered that we couldn't afford 4312 and promptly switched to 4411. Let's hope he' still able to come to his senses.

For the selections, it looks really hopeless.
The first things he said to the italian interviewer after the match where like "It's a pity we came here without 100% fitness" and "after this debacle the public has to keep calm and avoid jumping on the youngsters bandwagon as experience is the most important thing"...

At least Cannavaro, when asked about renovating the squad, just said that next season performances will determine who's picked.

We can only hope that our best replacements all have a super season and some of our veterans pick up injuries... Sad

    @ Abundance,

Did you see Lippi's post match interview with the medias? He asked the interviewer 'which young players?' the media keeps referring to??????? then said that young players have to be introduced gradually!!! Well, if he'd started a year ago like everybody said then we might have them introduced by now!!!! Fucking idiot, he said that he wouldn't change his plan, and walked out and said goodbye when the media asked him how many younger players he would be taking to the world cup.

Stubborn idiot knows he's wrong but won't listen to advice just because the medias got one over him.

    Sack the cretin <Ale>

One of my main concerns aside the selection is the tactical set-up. We don't have the personell or the mentality to play a 4-3-3, nor is it desirable in the relative athleticism or speed of the midfield and defence.

There also remains the question of why we can't set the pace or compete in matches in the first 45 minutes. In all three matches this tournament we've trailed at halftime with some dreadful performances. In the second halfs we have conceeded no goals and generally adopted a better perofmrance. Questions for Lippi or the next coach to answer but it may be time to re-evaluate Donadoni's performance as coach - despite his 4-3-3 he at least called new names up and gave Cassano a place. Despite our poor Euro2008 we were only eliminated thanks to the DONKEY'S shocking miss.

This tournament has been a wasted opportunity to try out the real players for 2010 and a disaster for confidence. We deserved to finish bottom of the group,

When's the last time Zambrotta actually had a good game for club or country? Everytime I watch him now, he looks awful. Poor defending, woeful crossing, wofeful passer. I think he has been an excellent player over the years, but his time has now surely come.

I'll admit that I didn't really see Toni in his Fiorentina day's, but he doesn't look up to it either in the national setup. I think he'd be a good squad player though.

The less said about Canavaro the better.

The U21's have hardly been spectacular, but there is clearly a lot of talent there. Defensively, in particular, they have looked impressive, and I genuinely think Motta, Criscito + Bocchetti are ready for the senior squad.

Likes of Cigarini + Giovinco are probably also ready for the step up.

What Italy squad would you like to see in the next game?

I suggest 12 changes in squad - in bold:

    Goalkeepers: Buffon, Amelia, Marchetti
Defenders: Chiellini, Cannavaro, Santon, Grosso, Zambrotta, Bocchetti, Criscito, Maggio
Midfielders: Pirlo, De Rossi, Marchisio, Di Agostino, Brighi, Foggia
Strikers: Iaquinta, Rossi, Amauri, Floccari, Cassano, Giovinco

    Starting Line up (4312):
    Buffon
    Maggio - Chiellini - Bocchetti - Santon
    D'Agostino - Pirlo - De Rossi
    Cassano
    Amauri - Iaquinta

Or alternate Starting Line up (4231):
    Buffon
    Zambrotta - Chiellini - Bocchetti - Santon
    Brighi - De Rossi
    Foggia - Cassano - Rossi
    Amauri

Reserve Pool for Lippi to choose from, when these players are in form: Abbiati, Santacroce, Gamberini, Motta, Palombo, Gattuso, Montolivo, Aquilani, Cigarini, Rosina, Gilardino, Del Piero, Balotelli, Miccoli.

Players like Toni, Camoranesi, Legrotaglie, Pepe, & Dossena should NOT be considered anymore. Its time for change!!!

    Italy: Marchionni comeback
    Sunday 30 August, 2009
Marcello Lippi has surprisingly called Marco Marchionni for the Georgia and Bulgaria qualifiers, leaving out Riccardo Montolivo.

The Coach was expected to bring in Fiorentina midfielder Montolivo after Gennaro Gattuso was ruled out for two weeks with a sprained ankle.

However, the former Under-21 international does not feature in the Italy squad for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

Instead his Viola teammate Marchionni is included along with Claudio Marchisio and Domenico Criscito, who made their senior debuts earlier this month against Switzerland.

Juventus veteran Nicola Legrottaglie also returns to the fold, as Genoa’s Salvatore Bocchetti is injured.

Italy will travel to Tbilisi to face Georgia on September 5 and then welcome Bulgaria to the Stadio Olimpico in Turin on September 9.

    Goalkeepers: Buffon, De Sanctis, Marchetti.
Defenders: Cannavaro, Chiellini, Criscito, Grosso, Legrottaglie, Santon, Zambrotta.
Midfielders: Camoranesi, D'Agostino, De Rossi, Marchionni, Marchisio, Angelo Palombo, Pepe, Pirlo.
Forwards: Di Natale, Gilardino, Iaquinta, Quagliarella, Rossi.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good to see Marchionni back. Our squad still looks really boring though. Cassano Sad

Or even worse, given some players are 2 years older and at least we had some exciting players in Euro 2008 like Cassano and DP (though they probably didn't play as much as they should've).

I don't think Lippi is necessarily past it. He is a coach who will be more attached to the older generation because of his age and his past. He's also a coach with a massive ego. He's under pressure from the media to callup Cassano. If he does call him up it would be like Lippi admitting that he was wrong and he simply can't do that because of his massive ego. He's always been like this - see his run ins with Panucci and Baggio in the past.

I do think he is a good tactician though which is something that Donadoni wasn't particularly great at.

That will be so tragic... surely Lippi wants to end his coaching career in a better way...

Italy should ve snapped up Capello, not given Lippi a second run...

Not sure about Capello. He's doing a good job with England, but if he was the Italy coach i reckon he would've still snubbed Cassano and been more attached to some of the older players (Panucci Shocked )

    Panucci, probably! Wink

But that said, capello would have built from defence, which is what Italy need.... thats what Lippi did in his first innings, this time he thinks he can start from where he left off, forgetting that a lot of water has passed under the bridge since (I am sure I am messing up that expression!!).

More importantly, Capello is hungry for success, Lippi seems to be resting on past laurels.. usually that makes all the difference...
