What's the point in playing 3 centre backs when most teams play only 1 striker? More insanity from Lippi. Nesta should replace Cannavaro who really should retire, he is in danger of ruining his reputation.

You touched on it right there. He doesn't have the balls to drop Cannavaro - he wants to play all 3 of Cannavaro, Nesta and Chiellini.

We also don't have the wingbacks to play 3 at the back anymore - Grosso and Zambrotta are too slow.

Maybe somebody can 'accidentally' injure Cannavaro before the World Cup, like Chiellini did before Euro 2008.

It's amazing how things change fast in sports.
Two years ago Chiellini injuring Cannavaro just before the Euro was a HUGE letdown. Today, most people would PAY to have him fall from the stairs in South Africa training resort =D

Dust off Cesare Maldini and send his son to South Africa as well... if Cannavaro is going then the Maldinis might as well make the trip too.

I told you Bonera was good!

But seriously, all Bonera needed to do was stay fit and play because he's another one who Lippi has a hard on for.

I'm surprised Marchionni was not called.

I get the feeling that people in Italy were convinced that Cannavaro was playing poorly because he was playing in Spain and the rest of the team couldn't defend which left him exposed.

Plus the backups were not exactly much better. Materazzi, Panucci, Barzalgi...

A lot of people dont rate him but I think he's very good. Hasn't impressed this season though I must say.

Worst Italian squad I've ever seen.

EDIT - You've seen 4 broken legs Punty?

Think he might just call Nesta for the final tournament. Same story with Totti.

Santon, Zambrotta and Grosso are injured. The former is the one who really deserves to make the squad though.

What about the Genoa pair, Bochetti + Criscito, neither ready for the step up? I know the former is a CB btw.

Would love to see Cigarini selected. He's such a classy player, but his omission is understandable given he isn't even a first choice at Napoli for some reason.

Bocchetti is also injured, i forgot about him.

I think as it stands, Pirlo, Montolivo, D'Agostino and possibly Aquilani would all get a call ahead of Cigarini. I hope he is phased in after the WC though.

Looking at the Italy squad, you can probably see the worst midfield ever to represent the Azzurri... problem is, I can't think of how to improve this midfield... there is a lot of talent (Giovinco, Cigarini, Foggia, etc), but most of these players don't even get regular football at the clubs... Lippi will have to seriously think outside the box, or cripple Italy with the likes of Pepe.

There are 2 midfielders who pick themselves: Pirlo & De Rossi.

Then it starts becoming muddier - a few months ago, I would have also put Marchisio & Marchionni in the same bracket. Not that sure now, as they are yet to recapture their form since return from injuries. However, I guess they should be considered coz of a lack of quality players available.

That makes it 4. I cannot think of who I would pick for the next 3 spots.... potential candidates IMO would include: Candreva, Camoranesi, Brighi, Palombo, Maggio, Aquilani, Diamanti, & Montolivo. I am undecided.

I know who Lippi will probably pick (Pirlo, De Rossi, Gattuso, Camoranesi, Pepe, Marchisio & Palombo/Montolivo).

Who do you think should be the 7 midfielders that Lippi should be selecting??

Disaster. Tho I can understand why Nesta does not want to be a part of this shitty azzurri, and a certain humiliating experience.

Nesta turns down Lippi Monday 1 March, 2010
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has turned down the chance to come out of international retirement and join Marcello Lippi's Italy squad.

Lippi has spoken to Nesta on several occasions over the last few months to try and convince him to return to the fold.

However, the 33-year-old doesn't want to put his fitness at risk or take a place away from someone who participated in the qualifying campaign.

“He told me, I believe in a definitive manner, that he doesn't feel like it,” Lippi revealed.

“I am sorry. I wanted to give a spark. But I respect his decision.”

Italy are in action in Monte Carlo this week where they face Cameroon in a friendly as part of their preparations for the World Cup.

The Azzurri will wear their new strip for the first time ahead of the finals in South Africa.

Apparently Lippi will still try 3-4-3, with Chiellini, Cannavaro and Bonucci at CB. Maggio and Criscito as wingbakcs. Pirlo and De Rossi in midfield and a trident attack of Cossu, Borriello and Di Natale.
