As someone's already mentioned, things are back to normal at St James'. Only at Newcastle can you have such lunacy at play. Looking ahead, Who can realistically be seen as his replacement?

Never!
No doubt the fans will shoulder the majority of the criticism from the London media, as usual. We'll be reminded of how we "hounded Hughton out" by the likes of Rod Liddle for years to come.

I would guess that a smaller percentage of Newcastle fans wanted their manager to be sacked this morning than was the case at any other club in the Premier League bar Manchester United. Hughton was pretty much unanimously supported by our fans; he was unanimously and greatly liked and respected for his character, for his perceived strength in taking the job on and making a success of it and building a sense of team spirit under difficult circumstances. Our performances this season have been very mixed, but I and I think the majority of our fans blame our poor performances on underperforming players and, more to the point, on the fact that we do not have a strong enough squad, which has nothing to do with Hughton but everything to do with the club's owners.
I'm not sure that the fans would be easily pacified were we to tomorrow appoint a coaching staff with Mourinho and Ferguson together at its head, with Shearer the assistant, with Albert coaching the defence, Lee the midfield and Asprilla the forwards. Many fans were angry with, lost pride and respect for, and felt detached from the club following the Keegan scandal, but Keegan's departure was muddy, and his character had been attacked before, so that certain arguments could be made and the anger was tempered to a degree. In this case, Hughton's sacking will be seen as a one-sided attack on the club and on a benign, thoroughly decent man who was giving us his all; and then there will also appear the Giant from Twin Peaks, saying 'It is happening again'.
The only plausible reason for Hughton's dismissal is that Ashley thinks it will ensure our relegation this season. I think he's power hungry and really wants a manager who will be entirely characterless and subservient to him; but regardless, I think there may be something to the idea that he sees our becoming a yo-yo club as the best way to recoup his money in the long or short term - in that we will continue to earn like a Premier League club as long as we are not out of the division for long, and won't have to spend on players or wages because we will never aim to do more than that; or else the continuing instability will at some point encourage a bidder he is happy with. The players are a rag-tag, motley bunch who were very much together under Hughton, and willing to fight for him as much as their spirits allowed. Their heads will drop en masse now, more so when our next 'managerial appointment' is Kinnear or Pardew.

Ooooh! Shock return for Albrighton. Makes me a little more hopeful. But to counterbalance the good news, Bannan is injured

I'm amazed the board isn't full of Liverpool fans berating Hodgson for not picking him.

Well, he probably would've spent the whole match sulking 'cause it's cold and he hasn't got Gerrard to pass to him, so it's might be a blessing in disguise for them.

Er, no I don't. I have nothing to look forward to. We have not won a single point this season when we've gone behind. Hope is dead.

you're cynicism is ruining Chris Hughton sack day
Liverpool are the team that teams change their stats against. Players who never score will score against us, brace yourself for an Agbonlawhore hat trick.

Maxi being on form really makes such a difference! The amount of 1 touch passes he's done under pressure already in the first 35 minutes to keep position flowing is great to see.

You're thinking of us. We just conceded a goal to Ryan Fucking Babel. RYAN. FUCKING. BABEL.
Besides Agbonlahor scored midweek. If Ireland scores, then you might be onto something.

Keys chipping in about odds of Jol becoming Newcastle manager being 40 - 1. It's very noticeable this season how Sky commentators mention betting odds at the first opportunity - Bet 365 must be paying well but it's irritating and isn't there any conflict of interest issue there?

The last 15 mins of that half were pathetically tepid, look like we've accepted defeat already. Gotta put on Carew or Fonz I think, to put more pressure on their defence. Take off Hogg, who's reasonable enough, but hasn't really got a clue what to do when he gets the ball (and his slowness in deciding was fatal for the 2nd goal). Leave Clark sitting, make Ireland and Downing get more involved in the middle.
