Interesting. Pep will move Lahm back to the RB position once Martinez and Thiago are back from injury. His long term plan for Lahm is RB:

    http://www.sport1.de/de/fussball/fussball_bundesliga/newspage_793290.html

He praised Lahm again and said that he did an excellent job in midfield. "He is the most intelligent player in the world and would be amongst the best on any position." He also emphasised the importance of loyalty - if players don't agree or don't want to understand his ideas, they'll be kicked out of the team. He is surprised how fast the team has understood his ideas though.

So Lahm playing in midfield will remain the exception both for Bayern and Germany.

Götze changed the match when he came on in the second half today, similar to the Sweden match for the national team. He's another one of those players who improve them team when they're playing.

Will be interesting to see what Guardiola's plans are for him, where he intends him to play.

    Bayern dominate Ballon d'Or shortlist

Franck Ribery leads the way as European champions Bayern Munich boast six players in the 23-man shortlist for the 2013 Ballon d'Or announced on Tuesday.

Ribery, 30, who contributed significantly to his club's Treble triumph last season, is joined by teammates Philipp Lahm, Thomas Mueller, Manuel Neuer, Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger among the nominees, who are selected by FIFA's Football Committee and experts from France Football magazine.

All players nominated for the award are currently based in Europe, with Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale and Liverpool's Luis Suarez also named alongside previous winners Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The list will be whittled down to three players in early December, with national team captains and coaches, as well as a select group of media representatives, voting for the winner, who will be announced on Jan. 13 in Zurich.

Robert Lewandowski, of Champions League runners-up Borussia Dortmund, is also nominated to complete a seven-strong Bundesliga contingent, the biggest single grouping from a European league.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is joined by teammates Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva as well as Monaco forward Radamel Falcao to give Ligue 1 four representatives.

Following his spectacular four-goal burst against Anderlecht in the Champions League last week, French media believe Ibrahimovic, 32 could sneak up on the rails to pip four-time winner Messi, regular candidate Ronaldo and Ribery.

Messi's Barcelona colleagues Xavi and Andres Iniesta are included, as is Neymar, whose spectacular start to the European chapter of his career has increased his profile still further. Summer signing Bale, after a fine final year with Tottenham, joins Ronaldo as Real Madrid's sole representatives.

Former Madrid man Mesut Ozil makes the list, forming part of a Premier League-based quintet which also features Robin van Persie, Eden Hazard, Yaya Toure and Suarez. Italian veteran Andrea Pirlo of Juventus is Serie A's sole representative.

The man who led Bayern to the summit of European club football last season, Jupp Heynckes, heads the ten-strong shortlist for the FIFA World Coach of the Year for Men's Football with fellow retiree Sir Alex Ferguson also in the running.

    Ballon d'Or shortlist:
    Gareth Bale (Real Madrid/Wales)
    Edinson Cavani (Paris St Germain/Uruguay)
    Radamel Falcao (Monaco/Colombia)
    Eden Hazard (Chelsea/Belgium)
    Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Paris St Germain/Sweden)
    Andres Iniesta (Barcelona/Spain)
    Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich/Germany)
    Robert Lewandowski (Borussia Dortmund/Poland)
    Lionel Messi (Barcelona/Argentina)
    Thomas Mueller (Bayern Munich/Germany)
    Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich/Germany)
    Neymar (Barcelona/Brazil)
    Mesut Ozil (Arsenal/Germany)
    Andrea Pirlo (Juventus/Italy)
    Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich/France)
    Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich/Netherlands)
    Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid/Portugal)
    Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich/Germany)
    Luis Suarez (Liverpool/Uruguay)
    Thiago Silva (Paris St Germain/Brazil)
    Yaya Toure (Manchester City/Ivory Coast)
    Robin van Persie (Manchester United/Netherlands)
    Xavi (Barcelona/Spain).

    Coach of the year shortlist:
Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid/ex-Paris St Germain)
    Rafael Benitez (Napoli/ex-Chelsea)
    Antonio Conte (Juventus)
    Vicente Del Bosque (Spain)
    Sir Alex Ferguson (ex-Manchester United)
    Jupp Heynckes (ex-Bayern Munich)
    Jürgen Klopp (Borussia Dortmund)
    Jose Mourinho (Chelsea/ex-Real Madrid)
    Luiz Felipe Scolari (Brazil)
    Arsene Wenger (Arsenal).

To be fair, Weidenfeller would have deserved it more last season than Neuer, not disputing the fact that the latter is the better keeper. It's just that Bayern's defence was so strong that he had hardly anything to do. It's actually a challenge on its own to remain sharp and focused when you only have a save or two during the whole match...

Why are Xavi, Pirlo & Mourinho nominated? The Ballon d’Or is decided on reputation

Fifa released their shortlists for the 2013 edition on Tuesday, and unsurprisingly there were some glaring omissions and unfair inclusions

    COMMENT
    By Carlo Garganese

The Fifa Ballon d’Or shortlist, revealed on Tuesday, has once again shown that players and coaches are rewarded based on reputation and not on their form and achievements over the course of the calendar year.

This has been proven time and again. The snubbing of Wesley Sneijder and Diego Milito in 2010 is just one example, but this year is perhaps the most blatant case of big-name favouritism.

In the main category, Andrea Pirlo and Xavi are among the 23 contenders. The pair have undoubtedly been the top two centre midfielders of their generation but both have been well below their best since January 1.

At Juventus alone, there have been two midfielders superior to Pirlo – Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal. The omission of the Chilean from the shortlist is nothing short of criminal; the 26-year-old has been Serie A’s standout player this year, inspiring Juventus to the Scudetto and Chile to the World Cup.

Xavi, meanwhile, has endured his worst year at Barcelona from a personal sense since his injury-plagued 2005-06 campaign. Struggling to maintain a high level as he reaches the final stage of his career, Xavi was outshone in a series of high-profile matches, including Barca’s 7-0 Champions League semi-final thumping by Bayern and Spain’s Confederation Cup final loss to Brazil.

Yaya Toure is another player who has only made the list based on past performances. The Ivorian has had an average 2013, with Manchester City finishing 11 points behind neighbours United in the Premier League in May and already well off the pace this term.

Eliminated in Europe in the group stages, it is inexplicable that Toure can be nominated ahead of Dortmund midfield stars Ilkay Gundogan, Marco Reus and Mario Gotze. The presence of just one Borussia Dortmund player, Robert Lewandowski, is insulting. This is a team who lit up the Champions League in 2013 along with Bayern Munich.

And a team that defeated Mesut Ozil’s Real Madrid in the semi-final after a 4-1 thrashing at Westfalenstadion. The playmaker was totally overrun by the above trio in that game and didn’t score a goal for Madrid in 2013 until April. His presence on the Ballon d’Or shortlist is purely a reaction to his high-profile big-money move to Arsenal in the summer, for whom he has played just eight times since.

The inclusions of Eden Hazard and Luis Suarez are less controversial, but also very debatable. Hazard has reserved his best form for the start of the 2013-14 campaign, but if that is sufficient to make the cut then Francesco Totti, Aaron Ramsey and Diego Costa should be inserted too. Suarez has been world class almost every time he has taken to the pitch in 2013, but he has missed almost a third of his club’s games this year due to suspension.

Spanish magician Isco - who dragged Malaga to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, was Player of the Tournament at the Under-21 Euros and has begun his Real Madrid career exceptionally - is more deserving than both Hazard and Suarez.

The coaching shortlist is also a slave to reputation. Vicente del Bosque, Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger have all achieved nothing in 2013. Mourinho even confessed upon leaving Real Madrid that 2012-13 had been the worst season of his career. The Special One lost the Copa del Rey final to Diego Simeone of Atletico Madrid - the Argentine is just one glaring omission in this category.

Fifa needs to consider new ways of deciding the nominees and winners of the Ballon d’Or. The current system - whereby the shortlist is compiled by the Fifa Football Committe and employees of France Football before the final voting is decided by international coaches, captains and journalists – does not work. The 2013 shortlist is confirmation that names are being selected purely on reputation.

Kroos really is the closest thing to Xavi these days. Not just in Germany, but arguably in general. They are very similar as far as their playing style is concerned.

But again, stats don't tell the whole story. A risky through ball attempt may go wrong more often than a sideways pass, for example. It all boils down to the function a player has in the team. Xavi or Kroos' main objective is to guarantee ball retention and dominance in possession, they are perfect for that kind of job. Others have a more adventurous style and hence a different function in the team.

Article on Schweinsteiger's new role in Pep's midfield.

Guardiola the only winner in Robben struggle

The class of 2013-14 at the Bundesliga champions will quickly learn that the Spanish coach is the one in charge and players that don't fall in line soon fall away

    COMMENT
    By Peter Staunton

"You cannot just say: 'I'm the coach and I make the decisions.'"

Stefan Effenberg knows a thing or two about being on the wrong side of coaches. No surprise that he took the side of the dissident.

"You have to explain these kinds of decisions as a coach. You're obliged to do that," he said.

Like everybody else in the Allianz Arena, Effenberg had just watched Pep Guardiola humiliate Arjen Robben. The Bayern Munich forward had picked the ball up and made off for the penalty spot when Nikolce Noveski fouled Bastian Schweinsteiger only for the order to come from the touchline to surrender the spot-kick to Thomas Muller. He did as he was asked but he was not happy about it.

Effenberg: "Your coach steps up like a schoolteacher telling you to give it to Muller. That's very bitter for any player and a bad situation to be in."

Robben had a short and sweet answer, saying: "I don't want to talk about it."

Bayern were leading Mainz, 3-1, at the time. Muller's penalty made it 4-1 with a few minutes to go. Hardly the penalty at Dortmund in 2012 which cost Bayern the title or the one in the Champions League final that Robben has against his name. But a power play nonetheless. Pep called the shots; called the shooter.

    What the coach says goes.

"He is still a little mad because of Saturday." - Franck Ribery

Robben can be an arduous character. Muller and Franck Ribery have both been involved in heated situations with the prickly winger that ended up in thrown punches. He hopped a sponsor board and scampered the long way round at Euro 2012, when Bert van Marwijk had the temerity to substitute him, instead of shaking hands with Dirk Kuyt who came on.

Guardiola offered the olive branch a few days after the Mainz incident. Robben wouldn't take it. Bayern had another penalty. This time it came against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League. "Arjen!," "Arjen!," Pep called from the sidelines, trying to make amends with the man he disappointed at the weekend.

He demurred. He gave the ball to Ribery who stroked it home and also spoke for his colleague in the aftermath. 1-0 on the scoreboard. 1-1 in Robben's head. When a player repudiates Guardiola's authority, there will only be one winner. Arjen, your card is marked.

"Am I the foster kid in this family, the guy who doesn't belong?" - Zlatan Ibrahimovic

If you want to see how Pep Guardiola deals with Problem Bears, read Zlatan Ibrahimovic's autobiography. The invective towards Pep spits up off every page he's mentioned. What also hits you is the lack of a Champions League medal. Pep has plenty of those and he didn't win them with players like Zlatan.

This was the swaggering Swede's assessment of the Barcelona dressing room: "Everybody was quiet and polite and a team player, and sometimes I'd think, these guys are superstars. Yet they behave like schoolboys."

They submit to the collective. They win trophies.

"He doesn't seem to be able to handle guys like me. Maybe it's something as simple as a fear of losing his authority."

He did deal with you Zlatan; he sold you.

Ibrahimovic was amazed that talents and egos like his were not pandered to at Camp Nou. But it was Xavi, Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Pedro and Sergio Busquets, that made Barcelona what they are. They did it with Pep, for Pep. Ronaldinho, worn out, sold. Deco, disruptive, sold. Samuel Eto'o, gone. Thierry Henry, gone. Zlatan joined them.

Pep used to tell Zlatan: "We're regular guys." Time and again, the forward refers to the school structure at Barcelona. Kindergarten to graduation, in football terms.

At Pep's Barca, it wasn't that creativity and expression were not tolerated. But those attributes were part of something bigger. The team. The team and its perpetuation above all else.

"It’s about having control and being authoritative." - Sir Alex Ferguson

Twenty-seven years after he walked into Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson was asked by the Harvard Business Review to talk about his management approach. It was called Ferguson's Formula.

"The job of a manager, like that of a teacher, is to inspire people to be better."

    Again, teaching, schooling.

Ferguson knew, too, what needed to be done when players did not fit, or outgrew, his structure. From match one to match 1500, the same man emerged victorious in the personal battles. Not Jaap Stam, not David Beckham, not Roy Keane, not Ruud van Nistelrooy.

"I told myself I wasn’t going to allow anyone to be stronger than I was. Your personality has to be bigger than theirs. That is vital."

Anyone want to argue with Ferguson's legacy?

"I am a great friend of my players when they accept what I say." - Pep Guardiola

Pep is going the same way. His way.

Yes, he prefers to work with the academy kids, those with the club in their veins, than the blow-ins, those who will come and go. Bayern suits him. His lieutenants, Philipp Lahm and Schweinsteiger, bleed Bayern. The next generation, Toni Kroos, David Alaba and the man who took Robben's penalty do too.

These are the player-types who make Guardiola sides successful. Zlatan and the rest of them can stay outside the schoolgates if they wish. Those who chirp from the sidelines or those dissatisfied with their roles in the team are collateral damage. You can't please everyone.

Pep has yet to prove his way doesn't work.

By putting the collective above the individual, Pep is 'very German', it's one of the most important foundations of German football philosophy at least. I think it may have been one of the reasons for him to move to Bayern, in addition to many other reasons that have already been discussed numerous times.

I've made up my mind, reveals Lewandowski

The Poland international has attracted the interest of a number of big teams from across Europe as he's available on a free transfer next year

Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has told interested clubs not to bother approaching him over a summer transfer as he has already made a decision on his future.

The 25-year-old recently announced that he would sign a contract with Bayern Munich in January after a move to the German champions fell through during the summer, only to claim shortly after that he had been misunderstood.

His latest comments put clubs such as Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United on red alert, but Lewandowski has now made it clear that he has already made up his mind.

"I am feeling very well at Dortmund, but I want a new challenge next season," Lewandowski told Sport Bild.

"I can only say one thing about my future and that's that I will announce my decision next year.

"No club has to bother with a fresh approach. I am focused on Dortmund and will not let anything distract me."

Lewandowski has been in fine form so far this season, scoring 13 goals in 17 appearances in all competitions.

So Bayern it is then. Bayern's sly, trademark 'pre-contract' business in full effect.

schweinsteiger will undergo an ankle operation

he will be out until the end of the year OH NO bayern won`t be the same without him, we really played very poor over the last weeks, one reason is the poor form from schweinsteiger (thx to his ankle pains who never really stopped) , you`ve  seen it already in the 2011/12 season (where he got injured against napoli) you can`t replace his class

    --------------------Martinez (lahm)

    --------Götze ----------------kroos

thiago is also still injured, but should be back after the international break

    omg what a performance

it seems that pep is not a huge martinez fan, first lahm ahead of him, now thiago

martinez will become what song is for barca, an expensive bench warmer

    midfield yesterday:

    ---------thiago
    --götze--------kroos

will be interesting to see how this will work against city, it will be an indicator for the martinez situation, will he play or not
