    You know Z, one of the first things that came to mind when I was watching the game this afternoon and Rooney gave the penalty away was your post about him tracking back too much, coming too deep, trying to do everything and not sticking to his proper role.

    Saying that, it wasn't a penalty, because it was a soft foul, the player wasn't in the area and even if he was the foul did not prevent a clear goalscoring opportunity.

    The second one was classic Robinson. Why this guy is still playing for Spurs, let alone England, is a mystery to me.

    If Rooney didnt track back the player would have been through on goal, where was Lescott the left back and Joe Cole the left midfielder?

    If they were playing in their proper positions, Rooney wouldnt have been in that situation. If the ref had done his job properly and given a freekick on the edge of the area (instead of a penalty) and everyone would be talking about how Rooney foiled a Russian goal scoring situation.

    Looking at it again, it seems that both players were covering the CM area. You then have to ask 2 questions: 1) Where the f@ck were Gerrard & Barry? and 2) Why did they both need to cover the area? Surely it should have been J Cole (or Rooney) doing the covering.

    Who cares? A striker who cannot tackle shouldn't be on the edge of his own penalty area. If Rooney hadn't been there, maybe Lescott and Cole wouldn't have gone walkabout.

    Come off it, it was a foul, he was in the wrong place. This is a fair criticism of him. He's not there to cover for Lescott's and Cole's defensive failings. In trying to do so, he was partly responsible for costing England the game. The player was hardly clean through on goal, there was no need to foul him at all.

    Just watched the incident again and he was covering for Joe Cole who lost the ball further up field and was strolling back central of the pitch, just past the halfway line.

    It was a clumsy foul from Rooney and he could have let him go as the ballwas going away from goal. So I guess you're right in that by being too eager to do everything and help the team out, he ended up hurting the team.

    I think the more important question is what the f@ck was joe "only player capable of running in slow motion" cole doing? Wink

    And the person covering for him should have been lescott, as when the player dived into the area there was no-one else there on the left side so lescott had been completely free.

    It's a good try but difficult to blame gerrard for everything Wink

    Hold your horses, there's another way to blame Gerrard. Shortly before that goal, Gerrard lost the ball in the centre circle and simply turned and watched for a couple of seconds as the player who'd taken it off him raced away towards goal, before casually and reluctantly jogging back in a token effort to make up for his mistake.

    Cole was simply following the example of the senior midfielder in the team.

    I don't know exactly if that is correct, but clearly cole was following his captain's example Wink

    This topic seems more interesting by the matchdays. Robinho who we all seriously doubted if he will get back to his best, seems to be on the form of his life.

    As it stands, Cesc=Ronaldo=Robinho=>Rooney.

    I wonder what this means for Ronaldo's chances of winning major awards in the future if things stay as they are? He will probably regret being owned by Kaka in those two matches, coz if Robinho plays like he did this past weekend then there's no way Ronaldo will win Ballon D'Or while playing in EPL.

    I should have included Messi in this topic. Doh

    Could you make any less sense?

    Rooney scores 9 in 9 games and he's being ranked lower? Why, because he got injured?

    Ronaldo scores 2 in one game and he has less chance of winning the Ballon D'Or?

    What the hell are you talking about?

    THIS season, Rooney has been better than Ronaldo! He has something like 10 goals in 10 games (or 9 in 9, can't remember)

    Robinho isn't ANYWHERE near the level of the other three.

    Rooney + Tevez seems to be as good a partnership in World Football at the moment (before Rooney's injury). Hence why Rza's comments are all the more strange.

    I could understand it better were Man U playing like shite and Rooney not scoring or creating. However under these circumstances, since he's been doing both regularly - odd is the word

    Robinho has had one (very) good month of football in 2 years and suddenly he is favourite for WPOTY????

    Rooney was the most inform striker (iplaying in the top 3 leagues) scoring goals in the prem, CL and European qualifiers. He has also had quite a few assists during that period.

    This season he has been better than Ronaldo and certainly better than Robinho and hd he not been injured he could have potentially outshined Fabregas.

    On current form only;

    Fabregas = Rooney >>Ronaldo=Robinho

    In terms of ability Robinho is head and shoulders over the other three, but currently he'd be my last choice out of the four from this topic. He had a great Copa America, and he seems to be transfering that form in the league now. I'm really happy for him at the moment, his ability is amazing and such ability should be lauded, not ridiculed (which he's often the victim of) Granted he needs to continue this form to even be considered an equal of the others in this topic.

    Aguero should also be mentioned. 12 goals in 15 games I think.

    tweeds he's been doing pretty well since his humiliating late return from brazil and subsequent dropping, ie he has single handedly won matches for them, games they really should have lost. its only over a shortish period and he clearly needs to do it more regularly to be considered in the same sentance as the other 3 in the longer term, but we've defo seen the reasons why madriz went for him recently.

    same here. he has clear talent but and i think that in a club like milan he would have already been up there. even though he chose a big club he chose the worst one to develop in and it has shown. the thing is that in his first season he well and whenever he got a chance he delivered in his second season but compared to what he showed before and in that amazing debut,which was incredible, he hasnt delivered. even now when he is really performing he isnt on the level he showed back then so i agree that he isnt up there with the others yet.

    Someone might be able to explain it better.

    He apparently held a party after the Internationals and invited loads of women and basically asked the bouncer/doorman to get as many condoms as he could find.

    Ability to what?
    Pass? Rooney and cesc are better
    Shoot? Rooney and cesc are better
    Finish? Ronaldo and Rooney are better
    Header? Ronaldo and Rooney are better
    Control and midfield? cesc is better
    Vision? probably equal to cesc and Rooney
    Hold the ball up? Rooney and Ronaldo are better
    Dribble? Close call with Ronaldo

    Skill? yes robinho is better
    Ball manipulation? yes Robinho is better

    Diving? close with Ronaldo.

    I meant overall ability. Obviously he is the weakest of the four in terms of strength and aerial ability etc. But he's probaby the most naturally gifted - even moreso than Ronaldinho. He just needs to improve his consistency, something which the others have managed. Though they still need to improve in this regard.
