It all depends on the damage and which metatarsal bone is involved. It is impossible to put a timescale on recovery from a stress injury.

After initial rest, the training techniques or body mechanics may need minor tweaking or a major haul to avoid a repeat injury.

With an impact fracture, after the plaster and protective boot is not needed (usually after 4-6 weeks), it will be a case of exercise and increasing weight-bearing activities.

Ice packs, strapping and even the use of oxygen tents can be used to assist recovery.

Full return to action can be anything from another four weeks and upwards - depending on the extent of initial damage. Young bones heal quicker.

One factor that also helps is if the broken bone is one of the three inner metatarsals. As was the case with Rooney.

This means that the fourth metatarsal is aided by the 'splint effect' of the bones on either side.

Preston's David Nugent broke his fifth metatarsal in March 2006 and returned to action after being sidelined for just six weeks.

His remedy? Drink plenty of milk.

Steven Gerrard (2004): broke his Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 10 weeks later

Gary Neville (2002): broke his Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 21 weeks later

Wayne Rooney (2004): broke his Fifth metatarsal - predicted 8 weeks returned 14 weeks later

Michael Owen (2006): broke his Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 17 weeks later

Absolutley mugged, I feel sick. Aresenal spent the whole game punting balls from the halfway line. Scholes and Evra completely screwed up for the first goal and why did he take Ronaldo of, Eboue definately wouldnt been that far forward to cross if Ronaldo was playing. what was VDS doing for the goal, the ball was straight at him, what an idiot.

Rooney and Evra played well, Ronaldo, Scholes and Larsson were pretty average.

Oh well still top, 6 points clear. Chelsea are still our only main rivals for the title. I guess it makes the battle for third more interesting.

Ps theres no point playing to your peak against united, then losing at Sheffield united. Wenger should ask his players why they can beat united, but are 12 points behind them.

    spot on

Did you hear what Henry had to say after the game ..

He said he rather Arsenal be up there with Manchester United battling for the title, more than beating them twice in a season and be 10points + behind them .. says it all.

Didn't really think about it to be honest but it is probably true. Eboue suddenly starts bombing forward for the first time in the game because he was no longer worried about Ronaldo.

Hmmmmm. A mistake maybe but only in Hindsight.

By taking off Ronaldo, Fergie playe right into Eboue's strengths. A rare tactical error from the Scot. Cost United the game. A draw was the fair result.

The Diva did fuck all apart from his goal, but at least he showed up when it counted. Scholes was fouled for the equaliser though Ale

henry and adebayor worked well for arsenal in the first half I thought..

Id only single out hleb, scholes, giggs and ronaldo for being really really poor from that game

A draw was probably a fair result, but how many clear cut chances did Arsenal create, they had 3 and scored 2, we had 4 and scored 1. We were comfertable until Scholes and Evra started playing crab football (i know scholes was fouled, but he shouldnt have been in that situation in the beginning).

I am waiting for the pro London media campaign about how Arsenal are the best side in England and they completely dominated the Prem leaders and how Henry is the best player in the world.

sorry i disagree because henry seemed not up for it. and also he is supposed to be the best in the prem yet he was nowhere today. but as i said before i think there were no good performances today because anybody worked and nobody played.

I think people perhaps expect too much from these games... i thought it was entralling from start to finish and some of the football was brilliant. against the best teams do we ever on this board come away from a game praising many players????? the defences are excellent and the pressure applied in midfield is excellent so obviously the consistency of a player will drop from a normal league game. both of the two big games were great this weekend in the entertainment stakes

Ronaldo didnt play well, but at least he committed Arsenal players, as soon as he had the ball, he had about 3 players around him. Which created space for Rooney, who played really well.

As soon as we scored we sat back, which was understandable as Arsenal werent offereing much apart from high balls. There goal came from a mistake, it was only when ronaldo came of, did Eboue go past the halfway line, which is what lead to the goal. So Ronaldo contributed to the team despite not playing well. unlike Giggs and Scholes who were poor.

I think the only players, to come out with any credit our Adebayeour, Evra, Rooney and Lehman. Everyone else was average.

They had alot of the ball, because they were behind, but they created 3 clear cut chances, we created 4. They hoofed the ball constantly from the halfway line and we were comfertable till Scholes and Evra started playing crab football.

A draw was a fair result, before Rooney scored the game was even, although we created the better chances. After Rooney scored we sat back, let Arsenal have the ball. I didnt see any last ditch tackles/blocks or saves from the united defence.

I have spoken to all my Arsenal mates and they all believe a draw was a fair result.
