If i had to pick two from the 4 as a partnership in my team it'd probably be Rooney and Villa. Eto'o is a better goalscorer but even in his better days wouldn't say he was the best in the world. I am biased so i shouldn't comment but im not a fan of that 20 league goals a season logic for somebody who does a lot more and suffers the odd 3 week injury 2-3 times in a season.

Re: Your World Class Squad - Results!!
Torres is older than Rooney and only scored 20 in a league season once with less champions league goals and he's less creative. That's why logic like that never works.

Re: Your World Class Squad - Results!!
Interestingly Rooney and Torres have pretty similar career goal records. Including internationals and everything:
Torres P395, scored 164
Rooney P369, scored 140
Take the last six seasons and it's 3 each as to who's scored most out of the two in all competitions, and Rooney's got slightly better record international & CL, while Torres has the edge in the league.
For Torres' European Championship, you could say Rooney's CL
So I'm not quite sure why Torres is there regardless and Rooney's such a question mark.

Re: Your World Class Squad - Results!!
Neither of them have particularly good scoring records because they were playing at the highest level when they were only 16-17. Seems unfair statiscally to not take that into account when some of the other players were nobodies at that point in their career.
There's too many forwards that deserve to be there basically.

Well, yeah, but you can kinda ignore that when you're just comparing the two, which is all I was doing.

Re: Your World Class Squad - Results!!
So people think there is no outstanding striker around, but rather a group of them round about the same level?
In which case there are now very few obvious choices in a WC squad.
Messi, Ronaldo are probably the only two who would definitely get in, I think a lot of other picks would be more debateable.

Eto'o, Villa, Torres - those three should be there regardless.
I like Rooney and I think it is a shame he hasn't been allowed to play his best position but he simply hasn't been consistent enough. Ibrahimovic has been much more consistent in his time for Inter while you like it or not. Last season he like Rooney was put in a position he doesn't like but still managed to deliver goals plus all the creative play. With that said Eto should ahead of both without a doubt.

the best defenders play in the EPL.
the best forwards in La Liga.
Forlan has won the golden boot twice, with relatively small clubs.
I don't think there's much between them anyway.
Kevin Phillips won the Golden Boot with Sunderland, Alan Shearer (same period) never won it.
But everyone knows who was the better player.
Your argument is bollocks, Forlan is vastly inferior to Rooney, don't forget Rooney as an 18 year old effectively replaced Forlan at Old Trafford.
there are plenty of good players in the squad as it is. I wanted to put in at least two out and out no. 9's. You can actually argue that Phillips was a better goalscorer than Alan Shearer. Same with Forlan and Rooney.

i know the english think the CL is the be all and end all, but ibra has won 6 league titles in a row and was probably the best players for his team in 5 of those six seasons, thats the type of consistency you cant argue with and Rooney and Torres have yet to match.

Ibrah deserves to be there. But Rooney has 3 league titles in a row and a better international and cl record so.... again i think a bit short sighted to call one consistent for achievements in a certain area while he's lacking in others.

It is not simply that Ibra has won those titles but he has been the most important player in nearly all of them. Rooney can't match that allthough he performs better in big games.L r dd wrote:Messiah wrote:i know the english think the CL is the be all and end all, but ibra has won 6 league titles in a row and was probably the best players for his team in 5 of those six seasons, thats the type of consistency you cant argue with and Rooney and Torres have yet to match.

That's just being picky. Ibra was the best player at Inter but then Inter were not good enough to go far int he cl and you could argue seria a was and is a lot easier to win. So i don't get why playing with Ronaldo should be used against Rooney.

Re: Your World Class Squad - Results!!
Like LRD said he's been playing for a better side with better players however about his consistency, granted throughout a season he will have his spells without goals but he's still always one of our most important players.
Plus if you look season by season he'll always be one of our best players
2006/2007 the best players were Vidic, Scholes, Rooney & Ronaldo
2007/2008 the best players were Ferdinand, Rooney & Ronaldo
2008/2009 the best players were Vidic, Evra, Rooney & Ronaldo.
If anything I thought he had a better season than Ronaldo last year.

Rooney could play as a number 9. He basically does that for England under Capello.

Re: Your World Class Squad - Results!!
It ain't fair to say Rooney is genuinely "World Class" yet, and I'm one of his biggest fans.
But by God he's getting closer and closer.
I would expect by the time he's 26 (he's currently 23) he will be regarded as that, if he continues to mature for club and country as he has. Certainly, playing the same position for both in a 4-4-2 as a second striker is something he has never had the opportunity to do whilst Ronaldo was at United.
Now will be his time to prove if he is great or not. Innit

A team revolving around Rooney would certainly showcase his ability. Capello and Fergie(Rooney is a better all-round player than CR7 ever will be) are doing exactly that. Wouldn't surprise me if he made WPOTY shortlist in a year or two.

Torres is fast, skilled, and finishes off chances. A far-improved player than his Liga days. He won Euro 2008, scoring the winning goal in final, and has proved he has the winner mentality. And goals will always elevate your level, at least to the viewers subconsciously .

Agree with everything and while we may have a point that Fergie hasn't gotten the most out of him and even at times seemed to have help stop his growth the truth is that Man Utd has won a lot of titles in this manner whether we like it or not. This is his big season to shine.Spider Crouch wrote:It ain't fair to say Rooney is genuinely "World Class" yet, and I'm one of his biggest fans.
