I would have prefered Quaresma, but Robben is a good signing also, albeit very injury prone, like most promising young Dutch players these days.

It depends on the system you want to play though. Robben is a left winger, basically "made" for a 4-3-3, not necessarily an effective left midfielder in a 4-4-2. That's the main reason why I would have prefered Quaresma.

If Schuster intends to play a 4-3-3 system, Robben is a very good signing.

I think Raul will stay and Schuster will probably go as far as to make him a starter in the first few games. However, after that I think Raul will lose his place to another player.

But Raul can't really be called grandad since Cannavaro is 4 years older than him and he's also the same age as Ruud.

Raul's nickname can be "Hollow Man" though, since he's invisible in most games Cool

    Confessions of Cannavaro

"The Champions League is now my first priority"

In an interview published by Italian sports daily “La Gazzetta dello Sport”, Fabio Cannavaro spoke about his future with Real Madrid. He stated that he is happy being a Madridista after having completed a season that man thought was destined for failure, but in reality ended with the League title. He realises that a position in the starting eleven will be much more difficult to obtain with the arrivals of Pepe and Metzelder, and he dismissed the rumours of his possible departure for another club, although he hasn't closed any doors either.

He feels happy having won a League title that many, with the exception of Madridistas, thought was a lost cause, saying “It was sensational, and even more so after everything that was said about this team.” And he is happy living in Spain, although he does feel a little homesick for Italy. “Of course I miss Italy, my friends, and my family, but right now I play for Real Madrid. I really like this city. It's beautiful. And I also play for the most important club in the world. I don't think I can ask for much more.”

The arrival of new players -Pepe and Metzelder- makes the starting centre-back position that much more valuable. Cannavaro understands that the competition will be fierce and that someone will have to watch from the bench. “I'll turn 34 during the season and I won't be able to play 70 matches at full throttle. It will be a long season and I will be able to play 40 at a demanding level,” he told the paper.

The defender knows there are rumours that he may join other European clubs like his former team Juventus, but he denies any contact. “They are looking for a centre-back to strengthen the team, but there were never any negotiations in the works.” Would he move back to Turin? “I played for Juve for many years and won two Leagues there that no one can take away from me. I don't have any unkind words for them, but rather the opposite. I do have two more years on my contract with my team, so if someone wants me to return they should first speak with Real Madrid. That said, I wouldn't have a problem returning to Juve.”

Another team, according to rumours, that want to do with his services is Mourinho's Chelsea. “It's an honour because he is a coach with a winning attitude. It seems like a lot of teams want me,” and in respect to the Italian team who does, Cannavaro pointed out that “it's no secret that I would like to hang up my boots in Naples. However, they have a project and a budget when it comes to signing players, and right now it's not feasible.”

Cannavaro believes next year will be a head-to-head battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona. “At first glance Barcelona may appear to have the upper hand having signed players like Henry. But at the end of last season our confidence was soaring, and that's thanks to Capello. Nevertheless, Real Madrid also have to play good football now.”

Regarding the difference between Spanish and Italian football, especially in defence, he stated that “in Spain the game is based a lot on one-on-one football. It's a lot harder to recover if they get by you. We have a more defencive mentality in Italy. We think more about crossing the pitch and covering ground. Coaches in Italy teach how to defend, while footballers in Spain play without fear and worry less about the defencive aspect. In the Bernabéu for example, they never substitute a forward for a defender.”

If Cannavaro had to pick a title he would like to win this season, he didn't hesitate in saying that “the Champions League is now my first priority. What's more is that Madrid want to win their 10th.”

I like the idea of Robinho on the right. He will give you natural width if he plays on that flank, but still leaves you with the option of someone that will cut in on occasion. He has a good left foot, but when he plays LW he doesn't use it very often. I think by playing him on the right (or central) will bring a better balance to the game.

ideally id like to have him behind RVN, but that doesnt really seem like its gonna happen with raul, higuain, and baptista/cassano. i believe he will better fit us on the right with reyes/robben on the left

I like that team, but the whole formation will have to be changed because of ONE PLAYER Grr and thats Raul. Seeing as Schuster would want to playing an Attacking midfielder(with a defensive one) and Raul has to always play, then Gago will be taken off in place for the attacking midfielder and Raul played as the second strike. But i like the idea of Gago and Diarra as well as a Attacking Midfielder/Playmaker.

I know it's hard to fill the papers every day, but Marca are saying RM are considering paying the 60M€ buy-out clause for Iniesta.

That WOULD be a coup. On the other hand, we'd have money for Lampard then! Wink

Would it be worth 60M€ to buy Iniesta? To me, it seems a grossly exaggerated price for a very good player, but you are also lining the pockets of your biggest rival.

Iniesta will be WC (if he isn't already) in a year or two. What other midfielders in the world can defend, create, score, and glide past players like he does? He scored about 7/8 goals last season which is fantastic. His level of performance throughout the season was also top notch, considering he played DM, AM, CM, RM. Didn't he also play as a striker last season, scoring 2 in 2 games?

Would be a wise move for Madrid, which is why I don't think it will happen.

60 million is ridiculous. Few players are worth that much and Iniesta is certainly NOT one of them. I would pay 30 million maximum for him. The last thing we need is to fund Barcelona's transfers for this summer while spending a ridiculous amount ourselves.

I doubt there's much truth to the story though. And even if there was, Barcelona would surely increase Iniesta's salary to make sure he doesn't play for us.
