He does seem prone to give up the absolute howler more than a top top goalkeeper would. I don't think of him as great in 1v1's. He's good in the air, good with his feet, I guess I can't really think if he is good at penalty kicks or not. The biggest thing for me is his blunders seem to be of epic proportions. Like against Argentina for Spain or was it Everton where he tries to play volleyball? I mean you remember them.

I don't buy that you have to win something to be considered one of the great players. Football is a team game. He's won the FA cup by the way. If Christiano Ronaldo doesn't win anything at Real Madrid over the next few seasons will you not think he's one of the best players in the world?

Reina has got the most clean sheets in the league in 2 or 3 seasons since he's been in England. He's single handedly saved us from finishing in the bottom 10 at times. He's a leader, he's a brilliant shot stopper and his distribution is second to none at times. As for penalty kicks well he is renouned for being a great saver of them - he helped us win the penalty shootout in the FA cup final in 06, he saved most of the Chelsea pens in the 2007 CL semi as well.

He is prone to blunders like nearly every keeper in the world but they are very few and far between in comparison to his brilliant saves.

For the record I don't think he's the best in the world but he's in my top 3 with Casillas and Lloris at the moment.

Sorry I didn't remember the FA Cup but in general yes the best should be winning something somewhere. Ok, Giggs was unfortunate to be born in Wales so I don't expect he would win the World Cup when he was in his prime but he was winning things for United. Ronaldo has won things before, but to go along with your scenario if he would not win anything in his stint with Madrid then no, I would not consider him one of the greats (at least not for our club).

Clean sheets, as Victor Valdes proves every season, is not (in my opinion) the best indication of a goalkeepers ability.

I don't watch you guys every week so everything I say can be taken with a grain of salt. But he does not seem to stand out to me when I see him. He is good with his feet (usually) and his kicking is quite good, although I don't think he is the best at throwing. But I could be wrong. I remember being surprised that Liverpool bought him from Villarreal because he wasn't making a big name in Spain at the time. And there are a lot of people that think Diego Lopez is better than him. It is all subjective really, but anyway there you go.

We obviously differ in this respect. I think it's ludicrous to judge how good a player is on what he wins with his club or country. How can one player be responsible for a club winning something? VDV is fucking exceptional but is unlikely to win the title or Champions league with Spurs IMO. Torres has never won anything yet was bought for 50 million. Alan Shearer was an unbelievable goal-scorer but didn't win anything at Newcastle. A player should be judged on how he performs for his club and country (if applicable) and Reina has been a credit to Liverpool since joining. It's a shame he's only won 1 trophy but he's played in a European cup final as well.

Maybe not but it helps a defence if they have a solid keeper behind them.

He's widely regarded in England as one of, if not the best keeper in the league. Not just by Liverpool fans and there's a reason - all the points I mentioned above in this thread. It's not really about 'standing out' it's about doing his job and for the most part he's been excellent for us.

IMO Buffon is still the best... followed by Cesar and Casillas... sometimes we mistake imediate form with class... if I was forming a team to represent this planet, those 3 would make the squad for me.

When's the last time that Buffon actually was the best though? He's undeniably dropped a level or two in the last 3 years, and I don't see him getting it back.

In constrast Cesar has been excellent for the past 3-4 years. He's been a bit indifferent this season, but I'd still have him as my first choice. If he has another season like this one though, then I'll be saying the same thing about him as I am about Buffon.

I do think Valdes is very underrated.

Look at the clownish defence he has in front of him, any gk can look vulnerable and make mistakes when his entire team is shite. But a few uncertain moments aside, he is still class. These days when you play against Juve, Buffon is the biggest problem - you just know that you will score a goal or two less. This is inspite of the career threatening injuries. The main reason people here are not voting for Buffon is coz he is now out of limelight... Juve are shite, and Buffon hasn't played much due to injuries. But if there is a game tomorrow, I would still prefer the likes of Buffon, Cesar, or Casillas over anyone else.

Nonsense, they couldn't vote because they had already voted.

So now they either twice or are too stupid to vote anyway.

....but this way you get to manipulate the vote into the direction you want : great way to invalidate the entire voting ok

Exactly what I expected of you.

    on the goalie front

Neuer almost certainly is the greatest goalie TALENT in the world

where he ranks amongst "finished" keepers is not altogether clear though

he simply produces way too many mistakes amongst all those moments of sheer magic

for me, the top German goalie NOW is either Wiese or Weidenfeller

    NOBODY else

having said that, those players who have played in the same team as Neuer go NUTS about him and RAVE their socks off

Metzelder thinks it's just scary to imagine how GOOD Neuer is going to be EVENTUALLY , bearing in mind how good he is ALREADY

and Rakitic is PISSING off his Spanish team-mates by telling them in no uncertain terms that Neuer is EASILY better than Casillas, in fact, he is easily the WORLD's BEST KEEPER

    ...

Rakitic: Auf jeden Fall.

Keep voting until tomorrow night for the right back poll <Ale>

Lol, so even though Stekelenburg has 7 votes and Iker only 6, you still let the Spanish poser win ?!

This is exactly how all those UEFA and FIFA popularity contests are done Ale

Some people couldn't vote after a day for some reason so posted their votes and Casillas ended up on 8. It's a wonder Stekelenburg is even in the reserve team ahead of Reina, Valdes or Lloris so I'd keep schtum Ale

Nonsense, they couldn't vote because they had already voted.

So now they either twice or are too stupid to vote anyway.

....but this way you get to manipulate the vote into the direction you want : great way to invalidate the entire voting ok

Exactly what I expected of you.

It's not a wonder Stekelenburg is ahead of some third choice losers, Maarten *is* the best keeper in the world at this moment.

Are you joking? If not, get a life. You really think I'm assed who wins these polls? I'm doing them to try and get a bit of debate going and to see which players everyone rates on here.

I still think that Germany's two best keepers are Wiese and Weidenfeller

    BUT

after yesterday's CL semi between Man U and Neuer

some on HERE, will have to RETHINK their comments above

    Smile

SAF : " Neuer was incredible. THAT was probably the best performance I have seen from a goalie against one of my teams."

then he ran onto the pitch to get Neuer's SHIRT

but the German rebuffed his advances

Manuel Neuer's performance reminds me of a lesss impressive version of Paul Robinson's one man effort to deny the fearsome Barcelona attack in 2001 with Leeds.

English goal keepers should not be mentioned in this thread. It's like offering bean on toast in a gourmet restaurant.

    Schmeichel:

"Neuer is quite possibly the best goalkeeper in the world and would be a perfect fit for ManU"

let's hope Tönnies makes Hoeness BLEED

Schmeichel also said he thinks Neuer is possibly the best because he's never seen him make a mistake.

Which definitely makes a nice change in how one rates a top goalkeeper, because the last time I heard this argument from Arsenal and Germany fans for a certainly curly haired Teuton, being a calamitous clown prone to mistakes was being spun as "mad genius"

Also, the fact this board is 80% English according to Blut does make me wonder how Joe Hart only got 1 single vote. Easily in the top 3 keepers in the EPL, if Man City make the CL next season I fully expect him to bury the recent beans on toast jokes at the expense of English keepers Ale

I haven't even voted, I rarely do in these polls. And even if I wanted to, there is nobody to vote for (who is "Neur"?).

I wonder who prefered Adler over Neuer though. That's a bold vote in these times of (justified) Neuer hype...

It was a vote for top 3, so presumably an unbiased German picked both Adler and Neuer.
