Liverpool close to Lucas deal - Page 5 Empty Liverpool for brazilan captain

Post by The Easter Bunny Sat May 12, 2007 12:24 pm

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/6648945.stm

Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Brazil Under-20 captain Lucas Leiva.

The midfielder, 20, won the Golden Boot while playing for Gremio in Brazil last season has been chased by a number of top clubs from Spain and England.

Liverpool Rafael Benitez told the club website: "The deal with the player and his club is almost done and I am really pleased he is coming to us.

"We know he has quality and we believe he has the mentality and character you need to do well in England."

Benitez added: "He can play as a holding midfielder but can also get from box to box and so I am looking forward to seeing him score goals for Liverpool .

"We know it can take time but I think he has the quality to be putting pressure on Gerrard, Mascherano, Xabi and Sissoko next season."

In the past 3 years Liverpool have signed 29 players (plus this one makes 30). For comparison Chelsea who have been accused of buying up all the available players (boohoo not fair) have signed 17. What on earth are they doing with all these players? Throw in the old hands like Gerrard and Carragher and you have enough for three teams!

    Is that the first team?

Probably because Lehmann's 37 - he raises our average age by about 2 years

How many English clubs can afford to spend £30m on the likes of Shevchenko? Surely they should be more concerned about Liverpool buying up large numbers of affordable players especially quality young players like the subject of this thread. Is Benitez learning from Wenger? Will Liverpool be putting their youth team in the Prem next year so they can concentrate on the Champions league? Wink

Yep the difference in the age of the goal keepers makes the difference. Normally big clubs have a fairly experienced goal keeper from the ages of 27-34. But Liverpool have an unusually young goal 'keeper ( I know Casillas and Cech are young but they are exceptional talents) and we have an unusually old 'keeper. Average age of teams should only include outfield players as it shows the true experience on the pitch.

Rosy , why would people worry about them buying large no of players that are equal in ability for eg if this Lucas guys plays for Masch I dont think many would worry that much as the level of quality remains much the same (Some increase decrease perhaps that is not what I am talking about so I will lave that) but if for eg they buy Etoo 40 m then its a worry or Quaresma 15 m or Alves 12 m then people will start to worry like we did when Chelsea got Sheva and Ballack.

It's just that a while ago people were whining about the threat of Chelsea buying up 'everyone' so that nobody else could get them. It seems that this is not the case. Surely the supply of up and coming youngsters is more of a worry to clubs in England than Chelsea paying over the odds to prize players like Shevchenko away from Milan. The point about football anyway is that it is a team game and I always felt that Roman's 'Galactico' policy was a mistake from a playing point of view (sold a few shirts I guess). Ballack and Schevchenko are great players but new players have to fit in and that can take time. When the team have to change their pattern of play to accommodate them that becomes a problem as it has been for Chelsea this year.

Maybe we are going to play three in the middle next season? Chelsea have 6 CMs (makalele, essien, diarra, mikel, ballack, lampard), no one is going after them.

    Can't see it myself.

Liverpool play reasonably narrow as it is and even if they do play 3 in the centre one of them would have to be a more creaive playmaker type playr, which Lucas isn't.

    I think either:
    - one of Alonso or Sissoko will leave
    - Pool don't sign Masch
    - Lucas goes out on loan

But you have no idea who we might buy in the summer, it could be a playmaker and a winger/forward type. So the formation might completely change, we havent had great attacking success with 4-4-2 so why not?

Yes, but if you were to play 3 in midfield, then it wouldn't be 3 from Masch, Alonso, Lucas and Sissoko - if you did that you're squad would be far too defensive and would alck creativity

They play Lampard or Ballack as well remember.

Mikel competes for Maka's position and Essien is a box to box player

Rosy , the galatico were not only bought for the footballing reason even without them I am sure Mourinho would have been confident about his squad to challenge things , Chelsea aim is to be a brand a world wide brand , every year thousand of people everywhere start following football some go for glory as the taste of success is sweet , some for style and some for stars , Chelsea were succesful , they thought (IMO)it would be easier to get success and big names rather then success and style , it could happen but more chance of failure.

That's what I was saying! However I think it backfired in football terms because Shevchenko and Ballack didn't fit sweetly into the Chelsea system.

Jose won't drop Lampard (there are times when he should have) and he daren't drop Drogba. Even when Drogba first arrived and wasn't scoring Chelsea always looked a better team when he played.
