Re: Liverpool close to Lucas deal
Just to remind you, Ive never criticised Sissoko. All anyone apart from parky has said in this thread is that a) you need to sell a DM as you can't support 4 Dms that want to play regualr football and b) that your policy on signing players from outh America hasn't reaped its rewards yet (Masch aside, after all he was signed from another EPL team)

Hmm...
Whilst we probably will sell a central midfielder, we don't actually have to if we stick Gerrard on the wings permanently. That would leave Javi, Xabi, Momo and Lucas for the 4 centremid slots. Unlikely to happen, but he could just be a Zenden replacement.
As for not reaping rewards...
Insua and Paletta probably have 10 games between them. Both of Insua's have been impressive, Paletta's less so. Gonzalez and Aurelio came from La Liga and Leto and Lucas haven't even arrived yet.
God forbid that two players, 20 or younger, would be given time to develop. Not every youngster can be a Richardson or a Warnock.

*yet
they may do in time. It was more to with with the issue of acquiring work permits but the L12 poster explained that for us.
What, so Masch-Alonso or Sissoko-Lucas?
Would it not be better to sell Sissoko or Alonso so that you can invest in other areas of the squad where you don't have three top class players? thats all I'm saying - like in the fullback, left wing and forward departments

Re: Liverpool close to Lucas deal
It seems that the "work permit" requirements go out the window when a big 4 club sign either a Brazilian or an Argentinian. Any other player must have 75% of matches played for his national team. Why don't they just say that there really isn't a "work permit" requirement?

Paletta and Lucas have Italian passports and I'm fairly sure Insua and Leto are the same (spanish/Italian).
If anyone goes I think it'll be Momo unless Xabi wants a move to Barca. He's looking more and more the odd one out and perhaps Rafa hasn't the time to be patient with his ball retention. He is capable of passing quite well (re: through balls to Bellamy against Newcastle and Kuyt against Reading) but he's just too erratic with it and his positioning is poor in comparison to Javi's. His stamina gets him through more work, but you get the impression Rafa would rather he just sit and sweep up play infront of the defence alá Javi.

Re: Liverpool close to Lucas deal
Masch is as good a passer as Alonso IMO + he releases the ball far better.
Economically speaking, you could probably get twice as much for Alonso than you could for Sissoko - maybe over £20m.

alonso won't be going anywhere this summer

Aye, and you lot could probably get twice as much for Toure as you would for Senderos, but you wouldn't sell him, would you?

Re: Liverpool close to Lucas deal
Only Real Madrid would pay that Tweeds, and they have other priorities this Summer. Barcelona already have Xavi and Iniesta I doubt they want Alonso too.
I would think that Lucas will be a reserve for the first 6 months like Palletta so it may not spell the end for anyone - Yet. The Mascherano was only an 18 month loan right?

A strange one but as Some one said it does imply that either Alonso, Momo or Masch will be sold, probably Momo IMO

Re: Liverpool close to Lucas deal
Lucas comes with a lot more pedigree than paletta cesc. As Sheva said, last season Lucas won an award for player of the season or something of the sorts.
Its also about three times the fee paid for Paletta.
It may not lead to the selling of any of the existing Dms though, for all we know, Lucas may bew sent on loan to an EPL club as Arsenal did with Song to give him time to acclimatise

Re: Liverpool close to Lucas deal
Liverpool are set to sign Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva from Gremio.
The 20-year old midfielder will join the Reds at the start of next season after Rafael Benitez beat a host of European clubs for his signature.
"The deal with the player and his club is almost done and I am really pleased he is coming to us," said Benitez.
"He is the captain of the Brazil under-20 side and won the Golden Boot in his country last year so we know he has quality and we also believe he has the mentality and the character you need to do well in England.
"He can play as a holding midfielder but he can also get from box to box and so I am looking forward to seeing him score goals for Liverpool in the future.
"A lot of clubs in England and Spain were asking about him but our scouting department has again been working really hard and it's good that he's coming to us.
"He will arrive in the summer and then will start adapting to football in this country. We know it can take time but I think he has the quality to be putting pressure on Gerrard, Mascherano, Xabi and Sissoko next season."

He has signed for a similar fee to our Denilson, I really think he will be reserve for a while. No youngster comes over from South America and hits the ground running.Tweedle wrote:Its also about three times the fee paid for Paletta.

He has an impressive CV, but I've never seen him. Sissoko hasn't been brilliant this season, even if I do think he's a fantastic prospect...It's just, watching Mascherano makes me realise how much more of a complete player he is, despite being a similar age to Momo. Why would we keep Sissoko if we have a much better version now?

Oh, and Insua's been bloody good both games he's played in actually Twoddle. Not that I'd expect you to pay attention. He's not a 6'4 african that Wenger's stolen from Belgium. He can't be a talented young footballer. Never happens.
World Class
Nice dig there, name me one 6'4'' African we own? the only player that matches that description is your own Sissoko - the same guy that you continue to eulogise week in week out.
If you haven't noticed Arsenal fans tend to prefer to get exctied over our 5'7'' spanish midfielder, our 5'11' French striker and our 6' dutch forward
Fabrice Muamba.
.
1)Muamba is English...
2)Hes 6 ft 2
3) he's not particularly good, good tackler and hard working but lacks any real technical ability. Sound familiar?
Why do you complain about this place being cliched then come and hand out petty insults...

People are forgetting that earlier in the season Sissoko played some terrific games, his injury came as a real blow and then the arrival of Mascherano dampened his confidence I think, but we will see what happens

I really rate Momo, but Masch is a far better player. He does what Momo does, and he can pass brilliantly. It's a dilemma.

Rafa disagrees.
You know he says '2 players for each position' - Well, if we play like his Valencia next season, we'll have 5 central players (With Stevie as the Aimer). That means we'll have 5 players for 3 positions! He might sign another central midfielder to compensate
