The man's a c**t mind you so he belongs in the Totti thread and is a fitting replacement for Neil Warnock.

    Really?

He comes across really well when ever I see him on MUTV and that's not being sentimental. Alot of the players like Macari and Parker come across like complete wankers.

He's a shite manager if that's what you mean.

If anything it was an attack against the "Gazzetta dello Sport", and the fact that you quote it regularly. Believe me, the pink paper is way below your level of intellect/language. Admittedly, the quality of journalism has improved but when I first came out here ('84), there was a running joke that if you went for a job interview with a copy of the Gazzetta under your arm, you'd lost the job before the interview even started Very Happy

As for the Poulsen references, I just find it ironic that Totti's countrymen can criticise such a player. If he was Italian, he'd have his own statue by now, or at least a street named after him Wink

Honestly (and here I'm not joking), I've had countless people in the last 23 years tell me that Gentile, Benetti, etc. were great because they did what they did without getting caught red-headed. Today it would be impossible (just look at Huddlestone getting sent off after 20 seconds the other night!).

I only really remember Robson's last couple of years or so and there really isn't enough repeat-footage of Robson in his prime.

I always got the impression he was in the shadow of Dalgeish in terms of ability in the English league in the 80s though.

    Purely on ability, yes.

But he still had plenty, had a great engine and was as hard a player as you're likely to see.

That's probably a fair assessment... although his technical ability improved drastically as time went on (his right foot didn't, mind!). It's a crime that you can't find much footage of Robson on YouTube. The sort of thing you grew to EXPECT from him was: a 50yd sprint to rob an opponent with a sliding tackle in his own area --> sweeping pass out to the wing --> lung-busting run from one end of the pitch to the other --> bullet diving header to score. The sort of player you'd still bet on if his team were 3-0 down with 15mins to go Wink

Unfortunately, his all-action style was always going to lead to him spending an exagerated amount of time on the treatment table. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he have to return home early from TWO successive World Cups ('86 and '90)?

Not sure about the c**t reference, Pierre. I always remember him as a real quiet guy (in stark contrast with his explosive playing style!), almost too shy to look at the interviewer. Admittedly, his managerial form has been less than enthralling (which doesn't particularly surprise me, all in all).

I was just joking, mate. Actually my Italian is not up to scratch, so anything in Italian is a bonus. It's not easy teaching yourself a language on CD, where half of the people sound creepy.

So, I know gazzetta is very pro-Inter and pro-Milan, but it's no Tgcom; even I, as a Milan fan, blush reading some of the stuff on there.

As for the other bit: I don't doubt there is a healthy dose of cynicism in Calcio. I think it was Ian Rush who said he has never been pinched in more inappropriate places when waiting for a corner-kick than in Italy. However, that is not to absolve players like Poulsen. If we can blame Materazzi for his goading, then surely, by using the same standards, we can blame Poulsen as well. One was just more high-profile than the other.

He didn't even make the 90 World cup, he got injured in a warm up game. Sad

I think 86 he got that injury in the first game.

Le Tissier scored some awesome goals, probably better than any player I have seen. Had he played in Europe he would have shown how good he is, without constantly having nosebleeds spitting, or elbowing people ;-).

I think why Le Tissier never played regularly for England, deserves its own thread as he was a wonderful player.

As for the sub standard debate, it was started by Pierre because he wanted to belittle uniteds achievements. He is trying to start a new one to explain how united won the league this season. Apparently we didnt win it Chelsea gave it to us, by having infighting between Mourinho and Roman.

I guess his theory has credibilty as Chelsea were top of the league from day one and then Chelsea had their 'injury crisis' - the one where Terry played more games than Nevile and Vidic, we overtook them and won the league.

No one should take Pierre that seriously, when it concerns United, Henry, French football, Totti, Italian football..... After all he spent months hyping up the Frenchies and Roma while slagging of united. So it was rather funny watching united eliminate one and destroy the other.

Back to Totti good player in Italy, but needs to turn up in a big game before he can be talked about in the same breath as Del Piero and Le Tissier ;-).

There isnt really much difference between Del Piero and Totti in terms of performing in big games. DP has always underperformed for Italy, and since his injury, he hasnt been too hot in the CL either. I suppose he scored against the likes of Newcastle, United, Celtic etc. so that means he's a big game player in your book Rez. Wink

Since his injury Delps hasnt been the same, but prior to his injury he performed in every big CL game Scoring some great goals against united, Monaco and in the 97 CL final. He also had some great moments for Italy during this time. Since his injury he has been pretty rubbish, Totti does not have such an excuse.

Del Piero wasnt up to much in Euro 96 or WC 98 9hugely dissapointing in the latter). Was very quiet in the CL final that season too.

Del Piero plys for Juventus and hence has the opportunity to showcase his talents in the CL. Totti plays for Roma, who are a good side no doubt (in part due to Totti's contribution) but are definately not a regular CL team.

I see your point and maybe Del Piero wasnt as good in that many big games. but he was always brilliant against us and when there was only one team per country in the CL, they would show all the Juve games on tv and he always played well, when I watched him. Seri A games were also on channel 4 and he used to regularly outshine Zidane.

Totti may be seen as a better player to most, but I rate Del Piero higher because he always impressed me when I watched him (prior to injury) were as Totti always left me wondering what the hype was about.

Bobo I am sure Totti will go down as a legend in Italy, but outside of Italy he will probably be remembered as the guy who on the biggest stage used to either spit on/elbow someone or not do anything of note. Razz

PS It doesnt matter how many games you get to play in the CL, the best players can leave their mark after just one game. Eg Messi against Chelsea last season.

Yep you're right, DP always did well against English opposition and i think alot of English viewers will have seen his other great matches like against Monaco and Real.

On another note, DP has always been more popular because of his great attitude and his modesty.

Also, like you point out Juve were the best italian team back then, hence they got most of the coverage on Channel 4.

Totti HAS performed, just not against English opposition.

like i said, i can see why your average english fan would not rate Totti. Thats totally understandable. However i expect better from you Rez Razz

Well, I'm with you that one! I still cite the Gazzetta as being one of my main sources of inspiration when first learning Italian. Even now you can get some right disapproving looks if you come out with cliché-ridden tripe like: "Rummenigge ha sfiorato il raddoppio con un rasoterra insidiosa!" lol!

Fully agree. It was the irony of Poulsen being labelled "Jack the Ripper" by the Italian press/public that had me sniggering.

As for Materazzi, I've been VERY impressed with the way he's handled himself this season: a) didn't get involved in the post-match fracas at Valencia, and b) totally dismantled the controversy regarding the sign displayed by Ambrosini during Milan's CL celebrations (i.e. he showed himself to be above it all). If the guy wasn't so prone to leaving his team a man down (and I'm convinced that some referees have it in for him), then I think he'd make a good captain.

He has behaved extremely well since last summer... a changed man, still very charged up, but there is nothing wrong with that. Also been our best defender, and scored a lot of goals for us (and none against us!) - easily his best season in nerazzurri colours....

    But Captain?? affraid affraid affraid

Well, he's got the charisma in spades, he's one of the few Inter players who speaks the lingo fluently (always a boon when dealing with referees!), and he does seem to have a lot more self-control than before.

Mind you, I shall review that statement after I've seen him play against Ambrosini in the next derby Very Happy

Ah, you are now confusing us with Juventus!!!

When Matrix starts talking to refrees, we usually find ourselves down to 10 men Wink When a biaconeri talks to the refree, they usually find themselves up to 12 men, one without the white stripes Laugh

Nah, Matrix will be the last guy to be made captain from that perspective... my heart usually comes up my throat and jumps out from my mouth when I see Matrix talking to the refree!! affraid affraid affraid
