But Pip Neville plays right back for Everton.

Yeah...but he can play left back..sort of.

We all know it should be Barry though.

Post by DS Mon Mar 19, 2007 12:52 pm

Steve McClaren has hailed Aaron Lennon as England's very own Cristiano Ronaldo, as he prepares to field the Tottenham winger in Saturday's game against Israel.
Lennon is expected to deputise for Joe Cole on the left side of England's midfield when they travel to Tel Aviv for a crucial Euro 2008 qualifier.
Stewart Downing and Kieron Dyer are also in McClaren's squad, but the England boss believes Lennon's pace and ability mark him out as a player in the same class as Manchester United star Ronaldo.
The Spurs youngster is normally deployed on the right wing at club level, but McClaren will have no hesitation in asking Lennon to perform on the left as England look to rejuvenate their flagging qualifying campaign.
"He's been unfortunate with injuries and illness this season but you can see in big games when the pressure and the spotlight's on him that he still wants the ball, still performs, still excites and wants to create something," said McClaren.
"The boy's got fantastic potential and he's also one who is flexible. He can play right, left or central and he's got the intelligence to do all three roles really well.
"More than that he's got the character and determination to play for England and be a very, very good player.
"He gives us the balance we need. I've seen him on the left and he still goes outside the full-back rather than always cutting inside onto his right.
"We haven't had his kind of pace or that kind of player for a long time - the Cristiano Ronaldo type who can take the ball the length of the pitch."
Everton striker Andy Johnson will also be offered the chance to impress as he is expected to make his first competitive start for England after missing out on the World Cup finals.
The Goodison star has scored 11 goals this season and McClaren believes his predatory instincts are a rare quality.
"I am not going to go over what has happened in the past with Andy Johnson, but we are looking for someone to play alongside [Wayne] Rooney and he could be the answer," McClaren added.
"Next to Michael Owen, Andy is the most natural goalscorer we have got - his record proves that.
"I certainly think he is capable of handling the game in Israel."

We'll be rubbish, all will play poorly apart from Lennon and Hargreaves...and possibly the central defence.

    We'll win 2-0.

McClaren will praise the efforts of the players on getting a result in tough circumstances. He will use the word magnificent. Then smile, reminding you of a horse.

No. McClaren has just hexed Lennon: hyping him up (with unreasonable comparison), Lennon feels the heat, and he'll choke against Isreal (after playing against chelsea in replay two days earlier) and the press will break him down.

Wish it won't happen, but it will.

England number two Terry Venables believes Jamie Carragher could be turned into the new Claude Makelele.
Venables admits the in-form defender has given him and Steve McLaren a selection dilemma going into the Euro qualifiers against Israel and Andorra.

And he suggested Carra could be accommodated by being thrust into a holding-midfield role.

"Jamie has been outstanding this term," said the England coach. "It will always be tempting to play him at the back to accommodate him, John Terry and Rio Ferdinand.

"Jamie was our best defender in that system in Croatia and I have no doubts he could cope with the left-back job.

"In fact, he could occupy any back-four position, plus holding midfielder. With work on the training field, I'm confident he could operate much as Claude Makelele does for Chelsea."

Why not just play the best players on their best positions, instead of trying to "turn them" into different players?

Carragher is like 48, isn't he? Good luck with that, you still have plenty of time to form him to a decent DMC.

Feel sorry for carragher especially if he doesn't even get to play right back and is shunted to the graveyard shift. he has done more than enough to deserve a shot ahead of the unfit terry but terry is captain so will never be dropped

Have I stepped back in time to 2003, and appeared in Houllier's office? I'll be hearing that Biscan can become a centreback in the Alan Hansen mould next.

    Young drafted into England squad

Charlton defender Luke Young has been called up for England's Euro 2008 qualifiers with Israel and Andorra.

Young, 27, joins the squad, who will train at the new Wembley on Wednesday, after Micah Richards underwent tests ona calf injury.

Gareth Barry and David Nugent have already had late call-ups.

We couldn't have got a worse England manager if the role had been filled by the winner of a charity auction.

Who has Barry been called up to replace? None of the left footed players from the original squad have pulled out have they?

    what left footed players?!

i think barry was in because carragher/pnev were the options for lb, but since gnev got injured, one of them will now be right back, so barry was put in as cover for lb. if that makes sense

    luke young? David Nugent???

Don't get me wrong, I think Nugent is a great talent but calling him up is McClaren basicly emulating Sven's Walcott move: he won't play, and it takes the place of a player who deserves the call-up much more.
It also doesn't send a positive message about the national team selection: work years prove yourself, have experience and you don't get a look-in; by young, have hype and/or one wondergoal and you're in the expresslane for a call-up.

No matter how talented Nugent is he simply shouldn't be called up now. At the moment its nothing but hype. Playing against Isreal can hardly be called the highest level, but he hsould earn his stripes first, or at least one.

Just been reading the Alan Hansen colum, how on earht does he, or anyone for that matter, sitll believe that the England formation against Croatia was a 3 man defence. It was the most blatant 5-3-2 ever. And the problem was not that the central defender s weren't used to playing against each other, its because we had defensive full backs as our wing backs...

And isn't Justin Hoyte better than Luke Young or is it only me who thinks that?
