Don't get me wrong, I think Nugent is a great talent but calling him up is McClaren basicly emulating Sven's Walcott move: he won't play, and it takes the place of a player who deserves the call-up much more.
It also doesn't send a positive message about the national team selection: work years prove yourself, have experience and you don't get a look-in; by young, have hype and/or one wondergoal and you're in the expresslane for a call-up.

No matter how talented Nugent is he simply shouldn't be called up now. At the moment its nothing but hype. Playing against Isreal can hardly be called the highest level, but he hsould earn his stripes first, or at least one.

it's a good point, but there truly isn't a lot of depth. If you're after experience you're looking at players like Vassell, Fowler, Cole who aren't getting regular football at club level. Nugent has been an U21 regular for a while and is performing well in the Championship which, if we're honest, should mean he's good enough to play against Israel.

Unless you want to consider the likes of Harewood, Zamorra, Beattie, Heskey or Ricketts?

It doesn't have to be that pessimistic immediately. Razz . Yes you have a strikers drought, but Lita merits a call up much more than Nugent in all honesty. And I would be quite confident that Lita would thrive surrounded by talented players.
A striking line-up of Crouch, Rooney, Defoe and Lita already looks a lot better. You may not be spoilt for choice, but neither is it no-where near as dire as yourselves claim it to be. What you really need is a proper link-up man.

I'm not sure what Lita offers that Defoe, who probably wont start, doesn't.

    Has this been mentioned before?

    David Nugent
As a youngster Nugent was released from the Liverpool academy as they described him as 'not good enough.

Good luck to him if he plays, i would have called up Lita instead.

Lots of players get released from clubs at a young age anyway dont they? Told they arent good enough then come back to haunt later in their careers.

    ok

the only real shame is if you reject a player and then go and spend millions on him later on.

Yeah Shearer was rejected by Newcaste at 15/16 then started his career out at Southampton.

Another example could by Gerard Lopez whom Barcelona signed for a large fee from Valencia. They released him at a young age and he made aname for himself at Alaves and then that Valencia team that got to the CL Final.

West Ham didnt sign Sheva as after having him on trial, Arry Redknapp didnt think he was good enough.

There are absolutely tonnes of these examples...

    We didn't sign Ibra

    Utd didn't sign Zidane...

Zidane never had a trial though.

It was only Cantona mentioning him to Fergie back in the mid 90's.

    We didn't reject Zlatan....

    He rejected us!!!! Yikes

In 2001 we offered him a trail whilst he was still at Malmo, he declined and stated "Zlatan doesn't do trials".

We signed Jeffers instead, leaving Ajax to pay the £6 million for him.

Ah, must have got my wires crossed.

He's a great player but if we'd signed him back then he'd probably have caused a whole raft of problems for us in terms of squad morale.

I also think he's a HUGELY overrated player by some on here and personally I'd rather have had the players that we've bought since like RVP
