Hardrada wrote:blutgraetsche wrote:Hardrada wrote: since we are not talking about the fact that the 1954 German team were on drugs or whatever.
As was every other team, including the Hungarians (no doping test, or awareness even, back then). This small detail never gets mentioned, one has to wonder why? Ah yes, since it can't be that those Krauts beat them by fair means.
The Germans did it most blatantly though. The team doctor admitted giving injections before the final (though he claimed it was vitamin C), several German players contracted jaundice after the game - in fact 8 of the 11 had fallen ill before the end of the season. Additionally, most of them ended up in rest homes at a far younger age than usual.
Of course, the main problem is that Hungary destroyed Germany in the groups, then Germany mysteriously improved drastically.
Personally, I don't think any team that took drugs to win can be classed as having won "by fair means", regardless of whether everyone else was doping or not. Same reason Ben Johnson doesn't count as a 100m champion.
Anyway, lots of WCs have been won dubiously, '54 was just the first that came to mind. Could have gone for '66 or '78 I suppose.
Germany played with a B or rather C team in the groups, another detail that never gets mentioned. The fact remains that they didn't do anything illegal back then, simply because there was no awareness for doping whatsoever in general. This changed (much) later.

Name us an Italian forward; i'll be generous..., under the age of 25 that is better than Rooney?
There isn't one! and that's for the 'world's best international team'

by the time Rossi is 21, and if Donadoni isn’t a moron and selects him, Rossi will have won Euro 2008

any striker can play fo a team like man u and do good, but he still dont come close to C.Ronaldo at all
In the past 3 yrs he has been a total joke in the CL and for England
Wow he does alright in the EPl for man U
Pitty i could play for man u and im sure they would win the league
Mate your deranged ramblings make no sense, but its good entertainment anyway.
I think he ripped it up against Roma and Milan, a team containing players from the great Italian world cup team.
Anyway Toni goal, now that we have demonstrated that Rooney is better than any player in Seri A under the age of 24, the whole Rooney debate is well, really a debate anymore.
So I say lets talk about Luca Toni, considering he is 9/10 years older and has achieved so much more;
Lets talk about his best ever CL goal... oh wait he has never scored in the CL.
Lets talk about how many goals he will score in this seasons Champions League...... oh wait he wont be playing in the CL.
Lets talk about his big money move to a top European club in a top league... oh wait he went to a Uefa cup team in the Bundesliga.
I guess we have run out of things to talk about, in regards to Toni. So I guess we should just carry on talking about Rooney;
How many players apart from Brazil Ronaldo has achieved as much as Rooney at the age of 21?????

I doubt you could actually name a sport in which Britian are behind all three. You of course will, probably something like Lacroose. Even if we are average at most sports, we are still well above most nations across the board.

Franco Baresi never won a World Cup, Roque Junior has. Does that make Junior better than Baresi?

I think we would own Italy at Lacrosse.
Swimming is the only major sport those 3 are better than us at.
But yeah, I don't think anyone could justifiably argue that Italy are a better sporting nation than England.

No one claimed Rooney was the best player in the world, but at the age of 21, there arent many other players who have done as much as he has. In fact apart from Brazil Ronaldo, I cant think of anyone. If you do please let me know.
I rate Rooney, but thats a tad bit of exageration. Ronaldo at that age was twice WPOTY, Rooney by no means is at that level - there is no comparison! Or even at Paolo Maldini level when he was Rooney's age and was regarded as the best LB in the world and a coupla CLs under his belt.
More recent examples?
Adriano at that age had led Brazil to Copa America win as top scorer, after FIFA youth cup win and South America youth championship win, & Brazilian Champions' Cup.
Tevez was already 3 time winner of South American player of teh year by Rooney's age!
Personal awards/achievements aside, IMO Messi is better than all of them (Adriano/Tevez/Rooney).

World Aquatics Championships, break down:
Water Polo (Yes)
Diving (1 Bronze Medal)
Swimming (1 Gold Medal)
Synchronised Swimming (No)
Open Water Swimming (No)
A one medal difference in those sports means absolutely nothing and so they can't even claim that, but they are better than us at Water Polo.

Swarpy - I'll also let Toni in on a little secret:
There hasn't been an Italian F1 drivers Champion in over 50 years, Ascari is still the only Italian driver to have won it
Ferrari were a joke until Schumacher (German), Jean todt (French), & Ross Brawn (British) came around.
If Hamilton wins it, he'll joil D.Hill, G.Hill, Mansell, Stewart, Hunt, & Clarke as BRITISH F1 WDC's .
He says Basketball - But Ben Gordon & Luol Deng are better than any Italian plaers at the moment.
Can't believe this thread is still going....

Murray spent most of his youth training in London and Barcelona. And yes, an Italian did beat him the other day in straight sets, but then again Murray beat Fed in straight sets before. 1 result doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of 2 players.
