Stuttgart warn Lehmann over wage demands
Arsenal keeper thought to be close to signing one-year deal
-----------------------
Jens Lehmann has been told by Stuttgart that, if he wants to move to the club, he must expect lower wages than he currently earns. The Arsenal keeper is thought to be on the brink of signing for the Bundesliga side after meeting officials this morning and it is believed Lehmann wants to secure his future before the start of Euro 2008 next month. But Stuttgart maintain that they will not pay over the odds for the 38-year–old.
"If he wants to earn as much as he did at Arsenal, then we have no chance," cautioned the club's general manager Horst Heldt.
Lehmann is being lined up as a replacement for Raphael Schafer, who has disappointed since signing from Nürnberg last season. Stuttgart, who finished sixth in the Bundesliga, are thought to be offering a one-year contract, with an option for a second year.
Lehmann flew out to Mallorca after the meeting to join the German national side as they prepare for their European Championship campaign in Austria and Switzerland.
