    To elaborate on Glenn's point you can't really blame manage selecting the athlectic type because of the demands of the modern game where top players are playing 3 times at least a week in high intensity games so it is not really a doubt that they end up burning out before they reach their peak.

    I really doubt people like Veron and Rui Costa would be able to survive with the demands of todays game. Even Totti who was not an injury prone player seems to be getting injured on a regular.

    Players like Adebayor who aren't the best technically make up for it in past, power and athleticism. That overpowers technique any day of the week. He still has the necesary technique to make it anyway.

    I also think there was more of a gulf between the crap and elite back then whereas the gap has closed immensely. Obviously money plays its part....

    Glenn/S4P are correct - it would have been scandalous if ronaldo hadn't won the individual awards.

    Messi does have a lot of hype for someone with so much to prove at the highest level - he'll never make it against big, strong athletic defences.

    But I fully support that choice of Ronaldo for the award, if such a season goes unnoticed then there is something seriously wrong.

    But if we manage to win the league or the CL this year then Messi is going to be a serious contender. He does stuff that nobody else does, and he does it game after game..

    Well this season Messi has 20 goals in 22 games.

    He's by the far the favourite for next years WPOTY but technically the award should only be based from this month onwards so we'll have to see what happens...
