How many goals has he scored against EPL teams?
None, in 8 starts. 4 Chelsea, 2 Liverpool, 2 Man. Utd.

But I remember him destroying Chelsea at the Bridge as an 18 year old.
Another thing people should realise, the EPL big 4 is probably the most difficult for top players to shine against.

Yep, that was the game he rolled out of stamford bridge.
But Tweedle wanted to measure his level by a single stat, so I that's what I replied with. No point in repeating obvious things.

Were there any more?
It's a bit obvious that he wouldn't do as well as he usually does when up against the best defense in club football last season.
Nobody would impress you if you only watched 2 games in a CL semifinal when some of their key teammates were unfit and unmotivated.
Man. Utd. could easily double up on Messi knowing that Ronaldinho was so poor that their makeshift right flank could keep him quiet.
IIRC we felt he was one of the best Barcelona players on the night, but it's not much compared to what the others were doing.
And in the context of this thread, I think most of us as well as a large number of neutrals felt he was still better than Ronaldo in those 2 games

No.

So he's only good against shit defences?
No what I was trying to say was if you only watch 2 games of someone against the toughest possible opposition, your opinion of him will obviously be worse than someone who you've watched more games of, against all types of opposition.

I dunno about that. I've seen games where individual players have performed way above the level of their teammates.
Though wasn't Messi himself just coming back from (another) injury? If anything, I'd use that as the excuse for his poor performances in those two games.
I couldn't remember for sure...I think he was, but not 100% sure so left it out of my post.

Nonetheless, Messi still spent the entire match trying to dribble past people and cut inside to where it was even more congested. I don't think I saw him try to go round the outside of the defender, down the left flank, once in the entire 180 minutes. Sure, he's left footed playing as a RWF so he is going to cut in, but to cut in every single time means that the defenders knew where he was headed every time they got the ball.
I dunno if Messi is like this all the time, but predictability is an immense failing when your primary job is to create and score goals.
Yup, he was rather predictable in that match, but this season with a RB more suited to our system playing behind him, he occasionally goes around the defender and then cuts back from the byline...he also floats around more, coming through the centre more often. Cutting inside is his most common move though, and probably with the injury/lack of movement from others, he just felt more comfortable doing this repeatedly.
IIRC we felt he was one of the best Barcelona players on the night, but it's not much compared to what the others were doing.
True enough. Though I'm comparing his level of performance compared to the hype he receives as a player, and to yours and other people's attempts to defend his poor performance.

Ronaldo is widely hated on these boards. Messi is not. The Liverpool and Arsenal fans will always pick Messi over Ronaldo in any such game where both are playing. And I bet they make up most of the 'neutrals' to whom you refer.
Ronaldo actually created some chances or half chances, including if I rape children the goal that won the tie. Messi created fuck all. As I said at the time, both were massive let downs in a tie that was billed as Messi V Ronaldo. I think Ronaldo was a bit more influential.
No, the goal came from a mis-hit clearance by Zambrotta which went straight to Scholes. The neutrals weren't just Arsenal and Liverpool fans, others as well. Though you're right that Ronaldo automatically has people picking against him because of his personality, whereas Messi is the total opposite.
Strangely though, when I said this we saw an outpouring of comments either to the contrary of what I'd said or accusing me of all sorts of daft stuff. Why? Because Messi still has golden boy status, at least as far as majority opinion on this board goes.
Exceptionally talented player? Yes. But he still hasn't proven he can stay fit for a season and dominate a competition leading to his side winning it. Ronaldo has. Ronaldo>Messi because of that.

I'm pretty sure Messi was coming back from an injury during that tie.
As to his movement - of course, he should learn over time to attack in more and more varied ways depending on the opportunities available to him. If you say he's been getting better at that this season then I'll take your word for it.
We'll see what happens. He may well turn out to be a better player than Ronaldo. Though not Ronaldo Ronaldo.

If you were going to choose one of them to be better than the real ronaldo, the entire world would choose messi and the EPL fan boys would choose ronaldo, keep on living in your little world were everything from the prem it better.

Memorable for someone who likes him as a player or memorable for someone like you who hates him for being better than your idol?

Which 'you'?
You are spot on with him being preditable. that is where i don't know whether to praise him for being able to be preditable but still have great succes or to critize for being to simple. As far as the comparison with Maradona goes he is quite a bit off. he has the dribbling but not the creative play. Messi's outstanding ability to dribble(best ever?) has meant he has never had to reily on passing that much. he will not be a playmaker but a good second striker. of course he is still better in this area then Cristiano Ronaldo but that doesn't matter.President Darkie wrote:@ Kas,
