Like I have said before.

He overachieved in 04-05 and was (deservedly for that year ONLY) awarded European and World Footballer of the Year runner-up.

Since then, he's gone back to something similar of his real ability (though I think he's a bit better than what he's been showing recently), but I think that after such an excellent 04-05 season and a great start to the 05-06 season (which stopped somewhere around October-November) he became really big headed and the fans expected him to continue these sorts of performances, which he isn't capable of doing.

Shame for himself, but painful to watch.

Chelsea star Frank Lampard has hit back at his critics and claims he is happy with his form so far this season.

Lampard has come under fire for his performances for both club and country this term.

The 28-year-old has scored twice in five games for Chelsea, but he has come under scrutiny after missing a penalty in last weekend's win over Charlton Athletic.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho jumped to the defence of Lampard on Tuesday and the England international insists he is content with his showings.

"It's just important for me to play well. I'm very pleased with how I've started the season," said Lampard.

"My Chelsea form has been very good.

"It's not important for me to please journalists and people outside the club.

"It's more important to please the manager and, if you ask him how I'm playing, he'll give you the right answer."

Surely thats one thing you don't want?

Either he'll get back to form or Chels will drop him... either way they'll have a functioning midfield.

So on balance I'd rather have him dropped if it gets him out of the England team.

Unless Ballack and Lampard start functioning together (something I doubt) then I may change my mind.

Crotia away next up is going to be a midfield battle.

We can't afford passengers. It could play a big part in he's near England future. Even McLaren taking off with 10 minutes is a positive for me.

Sven never took him off and regularly took off Gerrard or Joe Cole instead.
