England might have a chance to host the 2018 WC. Wonder if new Wembley is finished by then, the Russian linesmen should be less of a problem. Another problem might be the 23rd release of 'football's coming home', because people get confused with all the changes in the text - first it was thirty years of hurt, then it was no more years, then 40 years, then "damn it hurts", then 50 years, then just "Heskey please come back"...

Ballack was immensly important for the Mannschaft this summer, he played in the DMC position by his own request, because he could help the team better there. Ballack didn't just have a good world cup, he actually had a lot of influence tactically as well. The 4-4-2 formation with two DMCs to stabilise the defence was his idea. This might have weakened his goal threat, but it definitely helped the team, it was the winning formula. It was up to the strikers to score, and they did. Germany scored more goals than any other team in the WC.

That's how a truly great player should be like. Great players know that the team comes first, and they adopt their game to help the team as much as they can. And that was the main difference to Mr. Lampard this summer.

This is just great. A real classic Euroboard debate. The sausages (all taste the same? take it you don't eat Würste in the Fatherland trees??) and the "old bean" remark just cap it all off. Plus Pele and his wind-up stereotypes, great stuff (my dad was wearing socks with sandals the other day and he's Scottish... dear oh dear).

The above post from Blut is possibly the best so far I think, sums it all up... I'd have hoped that people who paid the WC proper attention would have noticed that Ballack being (electively) less of a goal threat didn't remotely mean he was less of a performer for the Mannschaft. The difference between him and the English duo, both of whom more than decent midfielders, especially Gerrard and especially when used in the right way, is that Ballack is the complete midfield player and the ultimate team player, who can play anywhere, from behind the strikers to as an extra defensive midfielder, with equal success. Even ignoring the goal ratio (I heard it was something like 44 in 107 games for Bayern and not too far off a goal every other game for Germany...)

The only problem is that with my No.13 Nationalmannschaft shirt Chrissi was right; I am rapidly getting more embarrassed about the Chelsea associations than scared about any aggro from Germanophobes...

i am half english and half italian. my passport is english because i was born here and yes i live here. I support Italy more because the FA are wankers, they put people like sven goran eriksson in charge to waste years of the best england team ever. Don get me wrong i'll support england aswell obviously.

No, no... I didn't mean Gerrard had been making as many comments as Lampard, but I just think that some of the stuff Gerrard's been saying "I hated playing under Eriksson" "We won't win the WC without Rooney" etc were just as harsh as Lamps' comments who said things like "I hope to silence my critics" (which I'm sure he has done club level - yet people tend to judge him over the WC now) and also things like "We didn't train enough under Eriksson" etc.

He's always done that. Like in the semi-final in 2002...getting booked, knowing he would be missing the final...did he cry? No, he went up the other end and made sure his team would be in the final.
