    We have two examples.

We have Beckham, who wins 3 trophies, has a great cl and wins it. Yet Rivaldo wins the wpoty.
Now we have c.ronaldo, has an amazing season better than everybody, but kaka has a better cl wins cl, and wins wpoty.

So? Thats where the argument comes in. If Kaka deserved it then Beckham should have won it right?

No. Beckham was very good but he definitely wasn't as brilliant as Kaká was this season. How many man of the match performances he had in the KO stages? He had some assists from CKs against Juve and Barcelona, but IMO Kaká did much more than him.

tbh i think Sheva deserved it that year.

Roy Keane Ale deserved it. No surprise Zidane & Davids said he was the best they came up against.

yeh apart from 45 mins at OT he dominated Zidane, Davids and Deschamps. Definitely a worthy call, but then he's irish and not a flashy player so...

I just felt the way Sheva dragged Kiev that far was incredible and they gave Bayern a run for their money. He also made a terrific start at Milan that year.

And it was a shitty Barcelona at the time! if i remember well he won it cos he scored a hat trick in the last game vs Valencia and thanks to him Barca was qualified for the next CL.

i agree..Maybe a MU player deserved to win the WPOY award that season <Ale>

It wasnt a shitty Barcelona, they won the league that season.

And the hattrick you're referring to was a couple of seasons later.

Scholes was the 1st Man United player since the mid 1980's to score on Italian soil (last being Norman Whiteside). The team of 1999 surely is inspiring the class of 2008, back then Manchester United had to play Bayern + Barcelona (Twice in the group stages), Inter and Juve (in the knockouts) just to reach the Final! I'm not saying its easy now, but the level of competition has decreased slightly. As for staying on this topic Ronaldo will probably will be one of the selected few who will finish as top scorer and who knows 1967/68 season when Best set the record for most goals scored by a Manchester United winger (32 goals in 52 games) he ended up winning the European Cup..

i guess so, though i don't think the EPL was a top league back then (hope that doesnt offend anyone). Kind of similar to when Bayern did the double in 2001 or Porto in 2004, none of their players really got any recognition.

Honestly, i think the format of the CL was much better back then and it was alot harder to win the competiton (group stage was much harder). Added to that, the UEFA cup was better and you don't get teams settling for 4th place in the league like Milan and Liverpool do. Plus teams like Udinese and Everton don't really belong in the CL.

Rivaldo was definitely the best player in the world in 1999. Both Ronaldo and Kaká deserved to win the award this year, but Rivaldo deserved much more than anyone in 1999. Anyway this topic is about Ronaldo...

Sheva had a great UCL and Dinamo almost eliminated Bayern, but he played in the Ukrainian league until June. I don't think that you, me or any journalist watched a single match of the ukranian league. Not to mention that Ukrainian league level isn't that high...

Quite simply - no he isn't.

Henry, ronaldo and Torres (they're the same to me) are all players who will do the business over the course of a domestic season that's true.

We're all going crazy 'cos Ronaldo scored a goal v Pompey where he did something amazing with a ball for the 1st time in his career.

Fair play to him he's obviously practised it a lot but its not like you can ensure that you hit the valve in open play and even if he does get FK's in every game he's very hit and miss.

These players are great until they get to KO phases of CL but that's where the money is.

Money = fear in football and people play very tight (I'd like to see how many goals per game are scored in KO phases compared with groups) - sadly these players just don't have the skill to beat these packed defenses.

Its great being 6ft 2, having pace and 7.5/10 footballing ability in end to end regular games where these 3 are going to get the 7 or more shots they need to score but its of no use in the KO stages where skill and efficiency are required.

Players currently as good or better than ronaldo:

Adebayor, Drogba, Kenwyne Jones, Ibrahimovic, Kaka, Seedorf, Pirlo, Ribery, Robinho.

ronaldo has the chance to be more effective than Henry and Torres in KO phases 'cos he can get on the end of corners.

However - the fact that he can't do anything truly remarkable with a ball, has limited dribbling skills and Ferguson's refusal to rest him for FA Cup games means he will be ineffective by the QF's of The Champions League.

sheva7 wrote:Rivaldo was definitely the best player in the world in 1999. Both Ronaldo and Kaká deserved to win the award this year, but Rivaldo deserved much more than anyone in 1999. Anyway this topic is about Ronaldo...

I just don't get the basis on what this goes on. Yes Kaka did have a great cl, but Rivaldo didn't even make it out of the group stages! Celtic are $h!t! but Milan went to extra damn time and Kaka is a magician for scoring against some knackered pub players. But he had great cl just that one example is not so great.

For me one contradicts the other. Both times the player who had a better season didn't win. Its clear there is favouritism towards brazillians and la liga players. Kaka never won it before so i don't mind him winning for such a great cl, but its clear when it was the other way around it produced a different outcome so imo you cant deny favouritism.

Right now most reasonable people apart from lunatics with bizarre ideals agree ronaldo is the best in the world. So i hope even if a cl semi like last year happens, he still gets the recognition he deserves by winning wpoty <Ale>

And it was a shitty Barcelona at the time! if i remember well he won it cos he scored a hat trick in the last game vs Valencia and thanks to him Barca was qualified for the next CL.

i agree..Maybe a MU player deserved to win the WPOY award that season <Ale>

It wasnt a shitty Barcelona, they won the league that season.

And the hattrick you're referring to was a couple of seasons later.
    Oki doki Bobo mate <Ale>

Rivaldo was better than Bechkam but it was harsh no MU player won the award after their amazing season <Ale>

i guess so, though i don't think the EPL was a top league back then (hope that doesnt offend anyone). Kind of similar to when Bayern did the double in 2001 or Porto in 2004, none of their players really got any recognition.
Treble is special. And prem 1999 is much stronger than the Portuguese league come on now.
Well 1999 prem was better quality than seria a last year. But Kaka wins wpoty for 1 trophy. Beckham wins 3! f.a cup, premiership, champions league. And you campaign for sheva i think you're nuts!

    Kenwyne Jones?!!?!?!

Sunderland have 23 points - you could knock about 20 off that if they didn't have KJ.

With Ade and ronaldo he is currently the most influential player in the league - a one man crusade to stop Keane from breaking Mick McCarthy's points record.

That's such a pathetic way to conduct an argument.

Its a very fickle game this - he only needs 2 quiet games v Lyon and all this will change.

Looking at his other Man U performances against French opposition I wouldn't bet against it.

Yes football is so simple to label a tall player you don't like a height merchant, a fast player you don't like a pace merchant. This is the new revolution of unpathetic arguments. Ronaldo is fucking $h!t! the man never kicked a ball with skill in his life apart from the last game. Kenwyne Jones is having a damn better season, as is seedorf clichy and lescott.

OK i'm being serious now, at this moment in time C.ronaldo is the best player in the world you only have to look at his goal tally to see that he is right up there.

but much like how everyone was saying cesc is the best midfielder in the world after scoring a few goals and now that his form has drop no one seems to remember him.

and this is what will happen with Ronaldo(maybe he will prove me wrong) and when this happens people will see that his overall game is nothing all that special i mean he doesn't give me goose bumps the way zidane, rivaldo and the both the fat fucks did when they were at the best.

in full he is just as close to a prefect player for the modern game as you will ever fine, and because of that he will always be up there providing he stays injury free and down to earth, but he will never be a fantastica and an imaginaire.

Arsenal were a great team. I don't believe the 3rd best prem team would have been hammered 7-1 by anybody. Man Utd won the cl, the league wasnt so bad, Arsenal won the title the year before and were very close in the f.a cup and prem race. Last year seria a was horrific.

    .

    Why will it?

He's been consistently scoring since January 2006 & his scoring rate is getting higher and higher.
