Not Liverpool. Remember ManU have lost their games when Rooney's been missing.

Because hes missed so many games! Bolton was a mistake from Pique. So Rio missing was the problem! West Ham a penalty miss at 1-0 what has this got to do with rooney! Rooney is a great player but this kind of stat is nonsense

I think the similarity between Ronaldo and Henry is uncanny. Really the only difference between the two is, Ronaldo is better on the eye, makes his run deeper and plays as a "winger". But both similer technically and both physical abilty out weighs their technique. (Though perhaps Ronaldo IMO better technically and Henry perhaps had more intelligences)...

I'm still waiting for him to do something of note against a Chelsea, Arsenal, Milan etc.

I haven't seen much of him this year though. I did watch the Tottenham game however, and I thought he was quite poor, but despite that he scored 2 goals, which is testament to his quality.

But yes definitely one of the best in the world.

When Ronaldo can get top scorer and top assister iin the league you can say they are similar, right now he is closer to RVN.

    You can scratch Arsenal off.

He scored and assisted this season. He had a game a couple of seasons back where he scored a double and in the 2005 FA cup final he and Rooney ripped their defence to shreds.

Few similar traits, but to say the resemblance is uncanny is crazy. He is a totally different player and plays in a different way. Ronaldo's technique is superior to 95% of players, this idea he has questionable technique is outrageous, one of the most skillful players man utd has ever had that is for sure. Sometimes i think certain people see certain things as second nature and natural to some people. What they do does not seem as incredible as it really is.

All the arguments i hear against him are flawed because hes already answered them.
Easy teams in the epl. Henry did it easy in the epl also - Premier league is a much better league now. Hes top scorer in the cl, and has a 1 in 2 strike rate for his country, already at 22 in the top 10 scorers of all time for Portugal.
Cant do it in the big games - Fantastic euro 2004, was motm v holland in the semi's. World cup was great against England, and even better against france in the semi's. Motm in 2 f.a cup finals motm in a cl quarter final...
Pace merchant who can only beat a man with pace - He spent 2 seasons beating a man 10 times before deciding to cross or shoot, everyone said he had everything except end product.....
Lacks a football brain - Maybe true 2 years ago, now the right passes are made, the right player is usually picked out, the right run is made. Also street wise, can pull a dive off, con the ref, get a player sent off if needed . wink wink Biggrin

Probably one of the more mentally strong players, doesn't panic, doesn't crumble under pressure.

He is the best in the World at the moment. <Ale>

He's so good that if not for him, this really would be Liverpool's year ok

Anyway, yes, he's prolific right now and would win all awards (even ahead of Ibrahimovic), but what happens in January doesn't really matter much. Ronaldo has racked up the goals and playing time against "easy" teams. Now with Man. Utd.'s tough fixtures coming up he can't really be rested either, so let's see if he can maintain this form and show it in big games or disappear again like last year.

January doesn't matter why not? lol!

all 27 goals were not in january. I tell you that big game thing gets taken into completly new levels each day. He played 4 games. ok 2 v roma. 2 v milan. he scored 3 goals, and played very well for 2 and a half of those games. But ok we'll see soon enough in these other games.

Because it is forgotten by the time voting takes place in late summer/early autumn.

Obviously, skill and technique aren't the same thing though. Ronaldo is more skillful than Messi, but Messi's technique is superior. You'd also say the same of Riquelme.

Can't really see the comparisons with Henry either. I'd also say that Henry is easier on the eye, very languid and composed. Ronaldo at times looks awkward, including the way he runs. Obviously both are (or have) been incredibly effective.

For me Skill is natural ball skills e.g. ball control, ball manipulation, balance. Whereas Technique is use of the ball e.g. Crossing, passing, shooting, touch.
Comparing Scholes to Hleb, I would say Hleb is more skillful whereas Scholes is more technical.

So overall I would say Messi is more skillful and technical the Ronaldo. What Ronaldo has to more power and longer reach - and a better weaker foot.

No Fey! He looks really good in the EPL just like Henry, but have him go against quality opposition say Milan, and you see how Gattuso keeps him in his pocket. Even Cristiano knows that his game NEEDS development that's why he wants to go to a superior league and play for Real Madrid.

Cristiano has reached his ceiling in the EPL. He already looks bored. He'll want a move to La Liga very soon, to better himself, to improve his game, to get a decent challenge week in week out. Biggrin <Ale>

Kaká's the best player by far! <Ale>

Well Shazlx, we disagree on that one. Gattuso played textbook defense against a highly talented footballer. Yes, the Italiano perhaps, was a bit rough against Cristiano. Nevertheless, it was all within the boundaries allowed by the rules. Gattuso even threw in lots of psychology jawing him throughout the game. It was beautiful!

When Gattuso shouldered Cristiano to the ground (perfectly LEGAL charge!), it was game over right there for Manchester United. The difference between both teams was abysmal. Milan could've won 6-0, 7-0, 3-0, it doesn't matter. The difference in class was huge, tactically, technically, psychologically, you name it. Biggrin <Ale>

Best player in the world at this moment says I!

    <Ale>

<Ale>

He doesn’t necessarily need to go to La Liga to improve himself as a player. C Ronaldo is nowhere near being the finished article, Gattuso doing well against him never surprised me. Also I wouldn’t call La Liga the superior League, Real Madrid walking it with no challenge whatsoever.

pure genius when Ronaldo has his football brain then he will be the best in the world.
    Intelligence>>Technique>Skill=Physical ability.

    Yet, Henry's your favourite player?
Henry had more intelligence than most forwards that includes the top ones like Sheva, Raul.

    <Ale>

What do you class as technique? Ball control? Ronaldo's ball control is excellent. Receiving long range passes at any speed he can control perfect whether in his stride running or just taking it down. Messi is a better dibbler than Ronaldo, and his close control while running maybe slightly superior, but this is just one element in someone's overall game, and Messi is one of the best dribblers around.

@ Puro. Mate the ref in Italy was a joke, he let so many fouls go. Gattuso should have been booked 4 times before he eventually was. The score is exageratted a bit also, it was 2-0 and they got another due to us bringing on extra attackers to try and get the 2 goals we needed. They played better and deserved to win, and ronaldo wasnt great, but he certainly wasnt helped by that joke of a ref. <Ale>

right now he is just a speed merchant scoring goals in the EPL, henry showed has how is that is. Wink

Lrd got there before me – did you not see Ronaldo's free-kick v Newcastle the other day?

Both goals made me utterly despair, though I would concede Ronaldinho's was maybe more genius, Ronaldo's more opportunism. I suppose the first one had more of the shock of the new about it too.

I'd still say there's a difference between being on unbelievable, and sensationally effective, form and flavour of the month, and being genuinely the finest player in the world. How fickle is everyone?

I'd like to explore the distinction between "skill" and "technique". Thanks Shaz for your brief summary of what you think the difference is, but perhaps those for whom the distinction is so "obvious" can articulate it to those of us numbskulls for whom it isn't?

Johan Cruyff speaks about Messi & C Ronaldo

"Time will tell what happens to the top talent these days," he began.

"The two share many things, most of all youth and talent. And they're much better than when they made their debuts. Their 'fireworks' are now channeled into teamplay.

"Beyond their individual actions and entertaining moments, they're beginning to excel in where they will have the most effect: having a good eye for their teammates."
